Sigma 35mm f/1.4 review
A few weeks ago, Sigma Canada and their exclusive distributors Gentec International approached me to test the most recent addition to their roster the 35mm f/1.4...and what an addition it is...

The Gulf Photo Plus Shootout is quite possibly the coolest photo event of the year, anywhere. But for the photographers involved, it's absolutely nerve-wracking.
Welcome To The f/64 Club: A Front-Row Seat at the GPP 2013 Shootout

Such a simple—and expensive—concept.
1. Shoot a palace interior. ($$$)
2. Print it on big-ass vinyl. ($$$)
3. Suspend big-ass vinyl print in a rented olympic-sized pool. ($$)
4. Light the living crap out of the pool. ($$$$)
5. Shoot a model in front of it with an expensive new Hassy HD5 MF digital camera. ($$$$$$$$$$)
6. But make sure that camera is in a waterproof housing that itself probably cost more than my car. ($$$$)
Enjoy.

You may remember Miss E. from our warehouse shoot last year. Earlier this winter, she was back home from New York City for the holidays and contacted us to take some head and full-body shots for her (dancer’s) “book”. We happily obliged – these are some of our favourites of the morning.

Winter is not a reason to pack your photography gear and give it a rest. As architectural photographers, it is easy (and most comfortable) to call it a season and wait til spring. However, one will find out that beautiful images can be made at any time, if you are willing to take that extra mile to do it

If you can't remember what green looks like on this cold day...
A photo I made on my trip to the Rockies this fall and haven't shared yet. There is really few things I love more than the light during a clearing storm. That sliver of sun peaking from behind the rolling clouds, the spring in the air...something just totally awe-inspiring...

Another simple setup: One light in a 22" inch beauty dish. That's it...

Continuing with our theme of dramatic lighting with +Amanda Large we went a much simpler, yet most effective set up. We wanted to take advantage of the door patterns and make for a more graphic composition. Light setup is one light bounced on the wall to the left behind the french door. That's it.

We (+Amanda Large and I) are always working on pushing our craft, trying something new and developing our style further. One thing that has been on top of our minds for sometime but had taken a backseat due to workload, was to add a more dramatic look to our portraiture. With some time to spare this week, we sat down for a little impromptu portrait session with yours truly. A lighting diagram is attached.
Basically, the idea was to create a Rembrandt lighting look, with a a gridded softbox at camera left, about 45 degrees, as the key light. A black flag was added to camera right to create stronger shadows on the right side of my face. For the rim light on the right, a gridded monobloc with reflector was used. A black card was added to prevent spill from that light onto the background wall. To add a little bit of interest, we blue-gelled a gridded, goboed flash and placed it behind three ... more »

A Curation of SuperRad Photos — The Best of 2012
http://bit.ly/Z59xau
It’s New Year’s Eve 2012!
While the New Year stands for new beginnings, resolutions, and clean slates, it’s also a chance to look back at 2012… a fascinating year. From the eyepopping athleticism of the Summer Olympics in London and the drama of the U.S. Presidential Election to the devastation of Hurricane Sandy and the wildfires that ravaged Colorado, there was no lack of engaging photography in 2012. I browsed some of the collective “best of” 2012 and created the roundup below.
Human exaltation, powerful and heartbreaking photojournalism and awe-inspiring sports + nature photography. These photos made me pause and look for an extra second – enjoy.
[I've put the names of photogs/agencies credited under each image - if you're feeling extra sassy, look these photographers up... more »

#2012Top10 #MyBest2012 Collections from 2012
Last year I curated a 2011 Top 10 list which was a fantastic success as it allowed a whole bunch of people to share their work across this awesome platform and others to discover several photographers they would never have thought of. So we decided to do it again this year, and wanted to thank you all for taking the time to participate and make this a fun experience.
This year's selection is fantastic, yet again, and I strongly encourage you to discover them all and leave a comment or two :).
Here are this year's participants:

2012 Top 10 Collection
Last year I curated a 2011 Top 10 list which was a fantastic success as it allowed a whole bunch of people to share their work across this awesome platform and others to discover several photographers they would never have thought of.
This year has been a year of transformation for me and I haven't gotten around to do much around here, but I'd love to repeat the experience again.
So here it is
Please share this thread with as many people as you can. All you need to do is create an album on G+ of your top 10 photos from this year. Any subject, all subjects. Then respond here with a link to it.
Also to make things easier for everyone, you can add the #2012Top10 hashtag to your posts.
I will then gather all of it, repost in the new year and post it on my blog as well. Would love to see you all again.
