Such a simple—and expensive—concept.

1. Shoot a palace interior. ($$$)
2. Print it on big-ass vinyl. ($$$)
3. Suspend big-ass vinyl print in a rented olympic-sized pool. ($$)
4. Light the living crap out of the pool. ($$$$)
5. Shoot a model in front of it with an expensive new Hassy HD5 MF digital camera. ($$$$$$$$$$)
6. But make sure that camera is in a waterproof housing that itself probably cost more than my car. ($$$$)

A photo I made on my trip to the Rockies this fall and haven't shared yet. There is really few things I love more than the light during a clearing storm. That sliver of sun peaking from behind the rolling clouds, the spring in the air...something just totally awe-inspiring...

Continuing with our theme of dramatic lighting with +Amanda Large  we went a much simpler, yet most effective set up. We wanted to take advantage of the door patterns and make for a more graphic composition. Light setup is one light bounced on the wall to the left behind the french door. That's it.

We (+Amanda Large and I) are always working on pushing our craft, trying something new and developing our style further. One thing that has been on top of our minds for sometime but had taken a backseat due to workload, was to add a more dramatic look to our portraiture. With some time to spare this week, we sat down for a little impromptu portrait session with yours truly. A lighting diagram is attached.

Basically, the idea was to create a Rembrandt lighting look, with a a gridded softbox at camera left, about 45 degrees, as the key light. A black flag was added to camera right to create stronger shadows on the right side of my face. For the rim light on the right, a gridded monobloc with reflector was used. Moraine Revisited
A few weeks ago, I posted the bottom picture from a sunrise shoot at the famed Moraine lake in the Canadian Rockies. I just wanted to show you the difference a few minutes can make. The top photo was taken a few minutes earlier, before the sun actually rose. I think it's in fact the favourite of the two as it shows a side of Moraine, quieter more subdued...

Once we reached the lava, we were greeted by a passing raincloud, so +Ed White and I made the best of it. ;)

I framed the shot and pre-focused the lens, instructed one of our friends to press the shutter while another friend held the speedlite behind us. We took a couple photos just standing before my husband said, "Just one more!" and dipped me with a kiss.

Plus One Magazine Update + Need volunteers

I got a lot of emails in the past couple of weeks asking me for an update on  Plus One Magazine which we were hoping to launch this summer. Sorry if I didn't respond - I'm doing a lot of travelling this month, and way behind in my email. 

At any rate, here's a quick update. I'm also hoping to recruit a few of you to help finish the issue #1, so read on. 

Our great designer +Andy Lee is finishing up first draft of the magazine. As you can imagine, it's not an easy process, and he cares deeply about how it looks. We're all artists and hope the presentation is good. We hope to finish the first draft in the next few days.

This looks amazing. The entire movie was shoot on 70mm film and it took 5 years to make. Truly moving and inspirational!

REMINDER - Last two days of Charity Print Sale

As June coming to an end, so is the charity print sale we started a month ago for our friend +Lee Daniels. The sale ends tomorrow, so don't wait if you wanted to buy a print or two.

The community response has been tremendous. Close to 500 images were donated for the sale. What even greater was those generous buyers who bought the prints themselves or who donated money to Lee directly. Some were photographers themselves, and friends of Lee. Others were not. 

A nice round number of 250 prints were sold during the sale, generating close to $3,400 in profits that are being sent to Lee. Lee has been floored by the support, and have written us several very touching emails. Most of us have no idea what she's going through right now, but knowing that we brought few smiles to her makes it all worth it.

I love it when a plan comes together

I worked with Nadine early last year, hers was my first planned composite family portrait outside of my own kids. This paved the way for an even more planned out shoot when she approached me to re-launch her blog "Adorkable Undies" www.adorkableundies.com to keep focused on her work in sexual education and discussion (the later being the open part - keeping it open helps us all break the taboo's of dirty terrible sex).

The tag-line in her re-launch was the obvious theme for the shoot "Keep your pants off!" Now, knowing Nadine, I knew we could do the pantsless shoot, but I didn't want to take it so far to be something like a boudoir shoot (many of which I see as failed attempts at portraying sexyness and sexuality), and play a bit more with her fun-loving theatre side.
