Target recently opened stores in select Canadian cities, and I just saw their new "hi, neighbour!" commercial. Really, Target? It's almost June, you know... But apparently Canucks wear toques all year round; throw snowballs at each other; have totem poles everywhere; skate a lot; live in quaint seaside cottages, don't drive cars, and paint everything red.

Adobe won't have a Creative Suite 7 -- they're focusing on Creative Cloud. I signed up or this last year, probably the only time in my life I was ahead of the trend.

Canadian Living magazine has a great article on gluten; unfortunately it's not online. But the best points:
--Last year the Mayo Clinic determined that 1.8 million Americans have celiac disease, and 1.4 million don't realize it.
--It takes an average of 12 YEARS to get a correct diagnosis. (Doctors prefer to use the lazy catch-all "irritable bowel syndrome", IBS.) Meanwhile, you could die. I nearly did.
--Ask to get tested for celiac disease if you have a lot of unrelated symptoms together: fatigue, depression, joint pain, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, mouth sores, skin rashes, yeast infections, lots of colds, sudden weight loss. And especially if your damn doctor has told you it's IBS.
Gluten is not poison to most people, but to an undiagnosed celiac, it's eventually fatal.

This was one of the creepiest AM-radio songs of my childhood. An older man presumably takes the virginity of a young (very, very young) woman, and sends her on her way. "Was that you last night? Crying on the radio, beggin' for a way to go, back to where love wasn't jumbled so... Oh, no, things are different now, than they were before. You know love is more than kisses, a whole lot more..."
"Put your dreams away, and read your box of Cheerios, and powder-puff that pretty nose, and go out and find your man where the wild wind blows." ("I'm dumping you.")
There was a sequel, "Morning Girl Later", where the singer encounters her again and chides her for "too much colour" on her lips and the fact that she's grown up so fast. "My, you've been around!"
The Sixties were creepy..
Both songs ... more »

I crave this jacket. I usually buy only men's jackets because they come with deep roomy pockets AND at least one inside pocket. Women's jackets are designed for looks, not function.

This school project was created for a Women and Gender Studies class at the University of Saskatchewan by Sarah, Kayla and Dylan. We wanted to show how ridiculous media portrays gender roles and stereotypes in advertising through presenting gender roll reversals.

Why books still matter.
"What books have going for them is that they’re tactile and still the best way to consume long-form writing. The sort of writing that’s born of pain and read with pleasure. That takes you out of your skin. Out of your century. Out of the transitory and into what matters."

Why Google+ is best for 'real-life streaming.'
Lifestreaming is when you combine all of your social media activity in one stream.
Lifestreaming is nice. The problem is that the word "life" in lifestreaming is misleading.
Social media activity isn't your life, is it? You know, where you go in the physical world, what you do, who you meet and how you feel? Isn't that the stuff we'd really like to remember?
For capturing and remembering your REAL life, the best place to do that is right here on Google+.
Here's why -- and how:

Weird day. At 1pm, we were working on the next issue when across the street from the newspaper where I work, we heard (1) hysterical, horror-movie screaming and (2) the screech of brakes. Turns out a woman went to back out of her parking space and checked her rearview mirror, but did NOT do a shoulder check. In her blind spot was a little old lady carrying her groceries. The driver ran over the old woman, pinning her under the car. The unremitting screams were from the hysterical driver and the screech of brakes from a passing van that stopped to help.
Everyone called 911; the driver went into shock; my coworkers who knew First Aid ran to the victim, who apparently had a broken leg. Paramedics and police eventually freed her from under the car and took her away.
I realized that I can never get my First Aid certification (and I admire those who do); I had thought the screams were coming... more »
