Swiss Photography Club G+95418 August 2012 (1 day)This photowalk leads us to the Big Aletsch Glacier. The glacier is located in the Bernese Alps, we will access it from the village Fiesch, Valais. We meet at 8 am, going up to Fiescheralp by cablecar. It will take us 2 to 3 hours to get to the glacier by an easy or medium hike (no uphill). At Märjelensee, a small restaurant is waiting for us. After lunch, we will take a tour on the surface of the glacier in a small group. We return to the village Fiesch in the evening by cablecar.LocationFiesch is located in the upper Valais, in 27km / 30 minutes distance from Visp. Fiesch is easily accessible by train and car.Meeting point / meeting timeWe meet at 8.00 am at the valley station of the cablecar directly in Fiesch.http://goo.gl/maps/Ms4IpWe buy tickets and take the 8.30 am cablecar up to Fiescheralp or Eggishorn.Ticket price Fiescheralp retour is CHF 26.20 (13.10 with half-tax)Ticket price Eggishorn / Fiescheralp retour is CHF 38.40 (19.20 with half-tax)Access hikeWe have two options:For perfect weather, we can take the cablecar up to Eggishorn top station for a magnificient overview over the Big Aletsch Glacier. We have to walk down a medium-steep trail down to Märjelensee (approx. 500 meter altitude difference, 1.5 - 2 hrs).In cloudy weather conditions, we hike directly from Fiescheralp to Märjelensee (2 - 3 hrs). There is almost no change in altitude, and we use a 800m long tunnel.MärjelenseeAt Märjelensee we will have lunch in the "Gletscherstube". After this, we walk down to the Big Aletsch Glacier, passing several lakes. The glacier walkA limited group of 10 people will be guided on the surface of the glacier. If time permits, we will walk to the middle moraine stream of this wonderful glacier. Outstanding photos are guaranteed! Please note that there are some reservations already.Return hikeWe have to leave the Märjelensee area latest at 4 pm in order to catch the last afternoon cablecar at 6 or 6.30 pm. Anyone who likes to stay longer or have dinner in a restaurant at Fiescheralp can take the last cablecar down at 9.45 pm (no cablecars between 6.30 pm and 9.45 pm).Gear for the hikeWhat should you wear? Well, you definitely should bring hiking boots (simple running shoes are not sufficient). If you have a pair of hiking poles, bring them. Make sure you have some light gloves, a cap and a jacket available as the evening can get cold. A spare shirt is comfortable as well. That's it.Gear for the glacier surface walkIf you are confirmed participant of the glacier surface walk, you need some durable gloves and long pants as the glacier surface is really sharp edged. Also bring band-aid and a small bandage for first aid. Important: As weAletsch Glacier Walk2012-08-18 08:00:0012

Snowy Ridge Steps

Published in my blog http://haferlandphotography.com/snowy-ridge-steps/

Selected for 9 TOP Google+ Photos for February 6 http://photoextract.com/plus-extract/2013/2/6

Winter is blue. Well, a little white sometimes, but the absence of plants in higher regions makes for a lack of "standard colors". I love that. Especially in mid-winter season, we have a strong sun and a bit of haze in thin air. This produces a very special atmosphere of "all things blue".

Ascending in winter means to go up by ski as far as possible (or reasonable). If you can't ski down certain passages, you have to leave the skis below the summit. Just like here: The last steps followed a rather fluffy snow ridge to the summit cross. To give the whole composition a scale, I placed the first steps prominently in the frame. The winter haze in... more »

Ridge Climbing Bietschhorn, 3'934m, Valais

There are 4'000m peaks in the alps, and there are peaks slightly below the magical 4'000m line. The wonderful Bietschhorn belongs to the latter. A mountain being not quite 4'000m leads many people (and even alpinists) to the wrong conclusion that it's not worth to climb it. Totally wrong. Okay, well, if you've climbed most of the alps 4'000m + peaks, the pressure of filling your personal summit book has gone.

Bietschhorn is a very majestic mountain located between the Bernese Alps and those of the Valais. It's a long and high climb, taking about 13 - 15 hrs r/t. To me, climbing this mountain was a dream which came true. What I liked most about this climb was the persistant ride on top of the ridge. I hope this photo conveys this feeling a little!

Moiry Glacier Sunset

Published in my blog: http://haferlandphotography.com/moiry-glacier-sunset/

Selected as one of the 7 TOP Google+ Photographs for May 29, 2013 by +Jarek Klimek - http://www.photoextract.com/plus-extract/2013/5/29

Today I feel for something bold ;-). As you know, colors can be very intense at day's end. Due to the highly reflective snow up in the mountains, the light colors are a bit amplified. So not much work in post...

Contrary to the vast majority of my mountain images, I created this image of Les Bouquetins and Mt. Grand Cornier from a very cosy place, the Swiss Alpine Club's Moiry Hut. What a luxury! This hut is perfectly situated and reachable without much stress. In other words, it's a superb place for a photowalk. We announced such a photowalk already last year in the agenda of the +Swiss Photography Club G+, butd... more »

PlusOneCollection III - Moiry Glacier Sunset

I selected this colorful image for #PlusOneCollectionIII, first published in my blog: http://haferlandphotography.com/moiry-glacier-sunset/ . For me, this photo represents pure alpine color which is so much different from what the mid-day sun brings up.

I did not do much posting this year but I'm sure I can catch up soon. Lots of high alpine images are waiting to be published.

Thanks for those of you who liked this image as I first posted it, and if you didn't see it yet: I hope you like it!

Blue Lava Lakes

For those who visited Iceland it's obvious: The location of this image is the Blue Lagoon / Bláa Lónið. While most tourists head for the Lagoon for a swim, preferably on rainy days, I visited this spot for long exposure photography.

The light blue color of the water is a product of the high concentration of silicic acid. The fact that the bottom of the lake is white colored by the natural chemical debris adds an even lighter appearance.

Of course it was rainy that day, and of course the wind was more than light. These conditions limited creativity a bit. I decided to shoot low angles in order to rise the tripod not too much. As the windy rain went reliably into one direction with only little variation, I was stuck to shoot this single direction to avoid rain drops on my filters. As the windy rain went reliably into one direction with only little variation, I was stuck to shoot this single direction to avoid rain drops on my filters. However, I was surprised of the still resulting overall sharpness of the images. Additionally, I made a little experiment: I left VR switched on for one image and turned it off for the next. The VR worked surprisingly well as it compensated the micro movement of the set up caused by the wind.

How was your experience, did you try to shoot a LE with VR turned on (on purpose ;-))?

Hope you like my image!

Water Hills Skeiðarásandur, Iceland

Published in my blog: http://haferlandphotography.com/water-hills-skeidarasandur-iceland

Glaciers melt, and the melting water has to go somewhere. It has to make its way from the glacier's ends to the sea, and as this is a journey without much difference in elevation, the water flow covers broad areas of soft lava rock fields. This results in wide estuaries or alluvial plains which are sometimes hard to pass. Several people wrecked their jeeps by trying to do so.

I was fascinated by the row of equally shaped wave tops of this melting water flow. It contained much mud and gave the waves a unique surface structure. Interesting thing was that these wave tops moved slowly forward during this long exposure, resulting in a different shape than it appeared to the viewer's eye. Climbing Dent du Géant

Published in my blog: http://haferlandphotography.com/climbing-dent-du-geant

I love my Swiss mountains, but sometimes it's nice to go somewhere else. The Chamonix region offers a lot, and I know french climbers who do not go anywhere else.

After climbing the Rochefort Ridge a time ago, +Daniel Arndt and me decided to climb Dent du Géant. This peak is a giant 4'000 meters needle, as you can see by the shadows down left. Climbing there is sometimes near to vertical, and the way down is really vertical: Abseiling only, sometimes overhanging.

The guy on shown here managed to reach the start of the climb a bit earlier than us, resulting in a 45 minutes waiting for us to enter the climb.

Little Emerald Gorge (Iceland)

Published in my blog: http://haferlandphotography.com/little-emerald-gorge-iceland

Today I start to post the first image of my recent short-trip to Iceland. There are so many great images posted here on G+, I'd like to mention my friend +Dominique Dubied as a superb example as well as +Tim Vollmer and +Joe Azure.

As a high alpine photographer I'm used to shoot with a limited choice of gear, under time pressure and generally rough conditions inherent with high altitude regions. In Iceland, many great spots seemed very accessible to me, some are even reachable within a 50 meters range from the parking ground of your car. This fact inspired me to seek for little gems which are less travelled, "harder" to access and sometimes quite hidden.

So I'm not sure if I will present images of the Top 10 spots of this beautiful island ;-).

Let me start with a view down into a rather small and typically yellow-green canyon. What attracted me most were all the details this frame offered. You can see every single stream of the waterfall rushing over the red rock, and every detail of the two lower falls are available. On top, the water flow divides into 2 directions. I'm not sure if this little canyon is very popular, and this is why I loved it.

This image was captured using one Big Stopper at 25 seconds exposure time. The wind was medium but made LE life a bit hard ;-)

I hope you enjoy this rather unusual image of my portfolio!

I'm happy to have discovered +Karl Louis here at G+, and I like his approach to circles and their content. But the very best is... He's Swiss! :-))

ACTIVE PHOTOGRAPHERS QUALITY CIRCLE - Edition 1.1

Active photographer profiles of all levels: hobby, amateur and professional. The quality of a circle is more important than the quantity of people in it. These photographers are active by posting their own photography, commenting on photos and other posts, interacting and represent therefore quality and that's what you should have in your circles. It consists of profiles only (a circle with pages will follow later).

TO STAY IN THIS CIRCLE (and future editions)
1. keep up your activity
2. reshare this circle publicly

TO GET IN THIS CIRCLE
1. you must be a photographer (hobby, amateur or professional)
2. post your own photos
3. comment on photos and posts
4. reshare this circle publicly

It's of course up to you to ADD THIS CIRCLE - I recommend it !!
In case you have trouble adding just wait a while and try again.

Allow me a personal statement about #circlesharing  :
Especially newbies are tricked into adding all kind of circles. Most of the time these circles are full of worthless pages and profiles. Social media is often misused by "snowballers" and "followerhunters". In Switzerland we have a saying about this kind of people: "They have a big mouth but no teeth" - in other words: they promise you everything and keep almost nothing. You don't need people in your circles with lot's of followers who will never add you back or interact with you in any way unless they are important for you as a person or what they do or stand for. I have been a professional photographer for many years and this circle is about photography only. It is not about "best" or "top" or "super" or ...  It is about quality only.

"Good Climbing Weather"

Published in my blog: http://haferlandphotography.com/good-climbing-weather

Mountain photographers know that "good climbing weather" often is the opposite of "good photography weather". No clouds, just blue sky. Well, there are several possibilities to make the best use of such a "good climbing weather" image. While post-processing, it was instantly obvious that color wouldn't do here - but there are lots of different tones available, which add well to the silhouette style of this capture. I like this image because of the depth, it's near-far-relationship.

I also updated my list of curators (thanks for your constant efforts), so I really hope that i don't bother any ex-curators again ;-).

It's been a while since my last post, more than 4 weeks already. Time to catch up. As most of you noticed, the spring weather in central europe was a bit difficult. The result for me was much less outdoor-activities high up in the mountains. So I've selected an image I made a while ago.

The typical "Wind of Maloja", coming up from Bergell,  blew the clouds nicely over Piz da la Margna and made for an almost volcanic impression.

I really enjoyed this day shooting with +Johan Peijnenburg. It's always fantastic to share knowledge and to learn how to do things better.

Contrary to the vast majority of my mountain images, I created this image of Les Bouquetins and Mt. Grand Cornier from a very cosy place, the Swiss Alpine Club's Moiry Hut. What a luxury! This snowy ridge leads "down" from Piz Bernina after the ascend via the famous Bianco Ridge. For many alpinists it's the choice for ascent and descent as well, but if you can, enter Grison's highest peak via Bianco Ridge. However, the ridge shown here is tasty as well.

You notice the two tracks in the foreground, melting into a single one later on: It's a passing-by-area. Too often you're stuck on narrow ridges 'cause of other alpinists and have no chance to pass them - here you have ;-).

Watching the weather is mandatory for all hig and long climbs. We witnessed this beautiful but strong Foehn storm over Zinalrothorn from the summit of Wellenkuppe. In order to escape the upcoming uncomfortable situation we had to return to the valley in time to avoid the heavy impact of this storm at an altitude of approx. 12 500 ft. This shortened our trip a bit but kept us comparably safe ;-).

Some of you might know this image already. Hope you like my image!

Sunny Snowridge Descent (view large)

Published in my blog: http://haferlandphotography.com/sunny-snowridge-descent/

There were not too many days of ultra-clear air this winter season yet, especially on the weekends. If the air doesn't contain too much dust, haze or moisture, silhouettes are nicely encircled by a fringe of light when you shoot against the sun. This day was great to achieve this effect at approx. 3'600m / 11 800 ft near Gornergrat, Valais, Switzerland.

Frozen Snow Waves

Selected as one of the 9 TOP Google+ Photographs for March 27, 2013 by +Jarek Klimek - http://www.photoextract.com/plus-extract/2013/3/27

Let's go a little abstract today: The winter ascend to a mountain near the Gotthard pass in Switzerland leads to a frozen lake at approx. 2'600m / 8585 ft, directly beneath a glacier. I really like those mountain lakes in wintertime as they offer a field of generally unspoiled snow in an otherwise rough and rocky environment.

What attracted me most about this lake was the frozen snow waves. Formed entirely by steady winds, they add perfectly to the banks of this lake. I've chosen a rather narrow view here to work out the shadows and the light on these waves and to follow the lines they offered.

Published in my blog: http://haferlandphotography.com/frozen-snow-waves/

In the top left corner there are some blown-way tracks of skiers who might have intended to ski down to the right - the terrain is far less than ideal for this. So they obviously decided to take the ascend back up :-).

Hope you like this "abstract" image!

Emerald Lakes Macun

Published in my blog: http://haferlandphotography.com/emerald-lakes-macun/

The 20 lakes of Macun are protected as a National Park of Switzerland. There are times when walking through this wonderful landscape is not permitted, e.g. when the summer season ends. It was a great opportunity to visit this place in summer - and get fresh snow as well. In general, few snow on alpine meadows generates visual clutter. Here, the clutter is very even, so it adds a certain structure to the landscape.

Some of my best friends here on G+ know this image already from my early posting days, but this one features a slightly different processing and framing.

Hope you like it!

Piz Buin Snow

Published in my blog http://haferlandphotography.com/piz-buin-snow/

Lots of people know the name “Piz Buin”. This is mainly because of the sun protection brand of the same title. In fact, it’s the name of a mountain with a Swiss side and an Austrian side. I have the impression that the Swiss side is climbed by fast climbers in very small groups while the Austrian side is entered by large groups of less experienced people on a single rope (I wrote about country-specific differences before; this seems to be one of it: https://plus.google.com/108665887827650124203/posts/LQwTyuQFWqf). Piz Buin has a summit elevation of 3’312 m / 10 866 ft, being climbed in winter and summer. If you go in spring, make sure you choose the nice couloir between the “little” and the “big” Piz Buin ;-), it’s highly recommended!

Well, this image of Piz Buin and adjacent peaks was created on a day with rather dull lighting conditions. We went to Piz Minschun by ski, ascending the last part to the summit by feet. Being surrounded by clouds most of the time, there were a few minutes of clear view, so I decided to use this opportunity. The original image measures more than 15k*7k pixels, revealing a stunning amount of details.

I hope you like my black & white image!

The winter haze in combination with the sun in front of you can be challenging, but it lets you create a natural vignetting. Those who know my other work might have noticed a strong similarity to my "Ridge Climbing Bietschhorn" image. See how much I love those views ;-)

Rock or snow, summer or winter: Life is always fine when you're at the top :-)!

Halo above Austria

Published in my blog http://haferlandphotography.com/halo-above-austria

I like halos, and in the mountains you can see them sometimes in different appearances. This is a typical halo caused by the icy cloud type cirrostratus. The sunlight is reflected by zillions of tiny ice crystals, and as these clouds are stratus clouds (horizontal layering with a uniform base), the layer is quite homogenious. This helps to bring up the full ring of reflection. Additionally, this type of cloud signalizes an approaching warm front bringing rain in the next few hours.

I was lucky the terrain let me change my position to center the halo and the sun to the 2.5 meters high summit cross. The mountains you see below are mainly austrian, on the right side you can see the distant Säntis.

Hope you like my capture!

Thanks again

From time to time a little "thank you" is nice. Especially when we get used to things. No, I don't mean all the photographers who are selected by Jarek and may get used to it. We all are used to enjoy a fine selection of photographs day by day, and this is because of the effort +Jarek Klimek does. So, thank you Jarek!

LAUBERHORN SKI WORLDCUP RACES
+Swiss Photography Club G+ Photowalk

On January 19, 2013 the +Swiss Photography Club G+ organized a photowalk at the well known Ski Worldcup Lauberhornabfahrt. Weather was better than expected and we had a few great opportunities to shoot the racers.

Many of you know that I'm extremely into high alpine landscape photography, but from time to time, I like to shoot action. This photowalk was ideal to do that.

The walk was a co-organization of +Fabrizio Vignali and me. Many thanks Fabrizio! I'd like to thank +Marianne Liniger, +Agnieszka Hollinger and +Mark Hollinger for coming, and sorry to all who couldn't make it this time. See you next time guys!

These alpinists ascend the “Zumsteinspitze”. They didn’t had much time. Only 20 minutes later, a severe snow storm hit the top floor of the alps. This was to be expected, as red morning light usually means bad weather. We were lucky to be there that early to catch the giant light show.

Hope you like it!

Wintertime - Aletsch Glacier

Published in my blog http://haferlandphotography.com/glacier-at-wintertime/

I visit the Big Aletsch Glacier each and every season. It’s not only one of the most impressive ones, it’s situated in the center of the Bernese Alps so it’s hard to avoid seeing this glacier. I’ve posted many different sights of this glacier, and as we have wintertime right now, a snowy image suits well. These two groups of alpinists are heading towards the south and are going down the glacier. It seems even here because at the Konkordiaplatz three glaciers combine to one, resulting in a more than 900 meters thick ice pack.

Hope you like it!

Allalinhorn, 4'027m / 13 211 ft (view large to spot 2 people)

Let me continue my Mountain Portrait Series:
The Allalinhorn is one of the easier accessible 4000m+ peaks of Switzerland. Cablecars take people from the village Saas Fee to top station Metro Allalin (3'457m) in some 30 minutes. The normal route is not too difficult - good weather provided. The Allalinhorn offers different ascends, one of the interesting ones is the Hohlaubgrat (ridge). When you're short on time, or got a hurting leg from your last climbing accident, the Allalinhorn is always there for you. By now, I visited Allalinhorn many times. Ridge Climbing with Crampons and 500 m / 1 640 ft air below

Ridge climbing is one of the most elegant, logical and interesting ways to summit a mountain. While on the ridge, you enjoy magnificient views to the left and to the right, the rock's most solid on the ridge, the route is (in some cases) out of question. Of course, ridge climbing means sometimes climbing on the shadow side, the windy side, the rock is crumbly and fragile or simply a mess where you don't see any logical route to climb.

In this case, shortly after sunrise, we had to evade a sleek rock wall and to enter the shadow side of the ridge, so we got into snowy and icy conditions. With your crampons attached it's fun. Amazing how different alpinist's schools and habits appear in different countries. The Swiss alpinists (like us) are used to climb snowy rock with crampons, while the french alpinists... more »

So +Daniel Arndt and me were the only ones with crampons attached. The alpinist depicted here had a very hard time, so we helped with our rope. One of the guys following him slipped, fell some meters and was later rescued by a helicopter. So? Never w/o my crampons!

High Alpine Color - Mt. Alphubel, 4'206 m / 13 799 ft

Light is everything. Being in the right spot is everything too ;-). This shot was made while climbing Mt. Täschhorn, 4'491 m / 14 734 ft this summer with +Daniel Arndt. On the first day we went up from Saas Fee to Mittel-Allalin by cablecar. To reach the Mischabeljoch-bivvy which is nested in the saddle of the rocky ridge below, we summited / traversed Feechopf and Alphubel. The way down from Alphubel to the bivvy lead via the distinctive, light separating ridge in the center of the image. Next day we summited Täschhorn and made our way down to Saas Fee.

I love those morning colors in the high alpine regions because of their bold blue-orange contrasts. Another nice thing: Being that high, you look down on literally everything, even on a 4'206 m / 13 799 ft peak. +Johan Peijnenburg picked this theme in his postea...

First Snow Mt. Rote Wand in Austria, Vorarlberg

I love snow. Fall is a very nice time even in the mountains. The first snow is already there, but you can still climb on dry rock. This time we went to Austria, Vorarlberg, which is located in the east, seen from Switzerland. We don't know all the mountains there yet by their shape, but we are recognizing more and more. Austria is beautiful too, and I guess my friends +Paul Turkowski and +Stefan Lutz can confirm this :-).

The mountain "Rote Wand" is good for wall climbing in it's south side, but much more "alpine" from the north. It is 2'704m high and has a small glacier, therefore  it gets some snow and conserves it. Hope you like the first snow!

Axalp 2012 Live Fire Event - Super Puma Flare Dropping

This is the moment the experienced visitor of the Axalp Live Fire Event is waiting for when it comes to the Super Puma display: The drop of flares. As you might know, flares are part of the self-defense system of military aircrafts. Being an aerial countermeasure against heat-seeking missiles, they are pretty good for a show effect ;-)

Axalp 2012 Live Fire Event - Double Super Puma Water Dropping

Enough highspeed-jets posted, day 4 is for helicopters. These two Swiss Air Force Aerospatiale AS332M1 Super Puma helicopters display a nice water dropping aerial firefight scenario. I got a nice row of images of this demonstration, but it only makes sense within a fast slideshow ;-).

In the background Lake Brienz again with the second visitors area, the Axalphorn.

Axalp 2012 Live Fire Event - F/A-18 Hornet Roll / Dive

This is part 3 of 5 of my Axalp 2012 album completion. What I definitely like most about this No. 3 image is the highly visible and translucent wing vortice. There's a huge g-force load for this high performance aircraft and the pilot to handle. No background visible today ;-).

Axalp 2012 Live Fire Event - F--5E Tiger Climbing

As written yesterday, this week I'll fill my Axalp 2012 album with shots. This is No. 2: In the background you see one of the two official visitor areas on Mt. Tschingel, and the Lake Brienz. This F-5E Tiger climbs up to my head for a canopy down pass. One second later he was already gone... I love that!

I decided to disable comments on this daily posting of jet images 'cause you have better things to do than commenting each of a series of similiar images. If you +1 it, i'm glad anyway. Thank you!

Axalp 2012 Live Fire Event - F/A-18 Canopy Down Pass / Roll

Most of you know my high alpine landscape photography work. Some of you know that I'm very much into everything fast which produces lots of  g-force :-).

(Nearly) every year in October the Swiss Air Force shows its capabilities in a live fire event, something quite unique in Europe. I love the precision of the pilot's flights and navigation between the mountains.

After attending the event in the regular visitor's areas in 2010 (2011 was cancelled), I decided to hike up the 2'800m-peak above the theater. The jets perform an outstanding maneuver in flying directly to the summit of this peak, roll and dive down the valley behind the peak. This means you have them heading to yourself highspeed and passing you only some meters above your head...

This shot of a canopy-down pass of a F/A-18 shows how close they are up there. The appearance of the silhouette of the photographer's arm is fully intended.

In case you like it, I let some more follow.

Dent Blanche Morning Rise: Be There!

Selected by +Jarek Klimek for http://www.photoextract.com/plus-extract/2012/9/27

As you might have noticed, I love colors in the mountains. Of course, they are most rich in sunrise and sunset (sure), so "be there" is the key. Luckily, this is rather easy as all big routes demand you to leave the mountain hut or bivouac in the night. So the most challenging thing is to stop climbing when the sun tips the rocky ridges. Good time for breakfast!

This image was made during the climb of Dent d'Herens with +Daniel Arndt, showing Dent Blanche (4'357m / 14 294ft), Weisshorn (4'505m / 14 780ft) as well as the huge glacier flank of Dent d'Herens in the foreground.

Hope you like it!

See what I see (View large for details)

Most climbing images are seen from a distance, so let me present what the climber sees by himself. This image might be a small visual challenge as this view is rather uncommon.

To keep reading short, this photo was made while ascending the last steep snow passage underneath the summit of Dent d'Herens 4'171 m / 13 684 ft. We are standing in the SW-face of this beautiful mountain. To those few people who are not familiar with alpine climbing ;-), you can see ice screws and other safety gear hanging down from my harness. Little Big Matterhorn

Thought you've seen enough images of the iconic Matterhorn already this summer? Not yet: Let me introduce the back side of this wonderfully shaped mountain, showing the Zmutt-Ridge (left) and the Lion-Ridge.

This photo was made while climbing the W-ridge of beautiful Dent d'Herens, 4'171 m / 13 684 ft. last weekend. The Swiss view to Dent d'Herens is mainly hidden by the Matterhorn, so this mountain is unknown to many people. Absolutely wrongly, because it is one of the most multifaceted peaks in the alps. It looks different from any angle, from any orientation. If you're summited the Zermatter Breithorn (Hi friends +Deborah Vos and +Johan Peijnenburg!) you can see it left to the Matterhorn, from Zmutt valley you have a view to the magnificient, even North Face, to be seen in the center of my photo. One of the most welcome facts is that Dent d'Herens is rarely visited, compared to other mountains and expecially to the overcrowded Matterhorn. Btw, this trip is highly recommended to my friend +Dalibor Pačić for your next visit.

So this climb with +Daniel Arndt was a wonderful, end-season, dream-fulfilling trip to a beautiful mountain.

The River (view large)

The first snow already covered the mountains in the alps (for a short time), so let me post another snow-free glacier image until the next snow blankets even the Big Aletsch Glacier.

This photo shows my favourite model coming from our Aletschhorn climb, walking down the Mittelaletsch valley. The Mittelaletsch valley is only accessible via glaciers and mountains. I really liked the visual compression of the scene, it doesn't reveal the width of the glacier which is 2 km / 1.25 miles. It also reminded me on a floating river, amplified by the colour of the ice. So let me sing "Going down to the river"...

Thanks!

Glacier Crossing (View Large)

Thank you +Jarek Klimek for selecting this one for

The Big Aletsch Glacier is the alp's largest glacier. After our recent trip to Aletschhorn (4'195m), we had to cross the Aletsch Glacier. It's a more than 2km / 1.25 mi long walk/climb through ice peaks and ice valleys. This glacier is so huge that it offers so many photo opportunities you could spend many days on it's surface. I did a lot ;-).

We discovered this beautiful stream in the center moraine of the glacier, only accessible with the proper equipment (crampons and ice axe, as you can see). So, unfortunately, we couldn't visit this one at the recent +Swiss Photography Club G+ Aletsch Glacier Photowalk last weekend with +Athena Carey, +Anette Mossbacher, +Christa Niederer, +Deborah Vos, +JohanPe... more »

Almost exactly 2 years ago I went to Moiry for a nice climb to Pigne de la Le. We expected dry rocks, but a summer snowfall changed conditions. Besides the wonderful colored Lac de Moiry, you can see the Moiry Alpine Hut near the bottom left corner - this is where a future +Swiss Photography Club G+ photowalk will lead to. Les Diablerets and Wildhorn show up as white peaks in the background. Hope to see you there!___

July is high season for high alpine climbing - if weather permits. As this is rarely the case on weekends this year, you have to be flexible. Starting in Grindelwald, there is a nice climb up to Schwarzhoren, which features a short via ferrata.

SHARING DAY

If you haven't seen this gorgeous panorama work of +Daniel Arndt yet, the time has definitely come!

PLEASE MAKE SURE ALL COMMENTS AND +1's GO TO THE ORIGINAL POST!

Thanks!

Alpamayo (5947 m) at sunset, Cordillera Blanca, Peru

Be sure to click this link for the full immersive panorama experience: http://files.danielarndt.com/2012-Peru-Panoramas/pano-AlpamayoHC4/pano-AlpamayoHC4.html

This is what they call the "blue hour".  It's that special post-sunset light.  I had scouted this spot -- about 15 min uphill walk from the high camp you can see in the picture -- earlier in the day with the plan of being there for sunset.  However, the sun sets quickly in Peru and fast walking at that altitude is not an option.  So I arrived a bit late for the show...

I tried to convince my friend to swim over there for a sense of scale, but she refused... So all we have for that is the little waves.___

As you can see, in the mountains there is always some spring and some winter - it just depends on the altitude. Time to share - Get the most wonderful landscape photos into your stream

+Johan Peijnenburg did a very good and valuable job by handpicking the most interesting landscape photographers into a circle.

Don't miss out this circle!

Thanks, Johan!

SELECTED NATURE & LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHERS (version 7)

Here is version 7 of the Nature & Landscape Photographers circle. I reviewed about 700 profiles for this update and selected the 375 photographers I liked best. There are about 130 new additions! I will list  them in the comments ...

To get into this circle, you don't have to re-share it, circle me back or send me candy. Just make sure to share awesome nature and landscape images. It's that simple!!!

Want to be (re-)considered for inclusion? Leave a comment or contact me directly, if you feel you meet the criteria: posting primarily good nature and landscape images on G+ on a regular basis. Next update: end of August 2012

In the Mont Blanc area, you can ascend the huge Glacier des Bossons towards Mont Blanc and other peaks. You can ski down the same route back to the hut. Just be aware of a giant ice shield break-off zone far above your head, sending down towers of ice randomly. We decided to take another route for the ascend and only ski down this icy zone, so we'd spend as few time as possible there. We had so many freshly crushed ice that the route was literally blocked. Being there just for a short time was, well, the "right" decision.

This tough guy is Herr +Daniel Arndt, making his way through a giant field of ice blocks weighing in at hundreds of pounds to many tons each. I don't cheat on their color; man, they were blue!___

You know, I love the white and blue of high mountains and ice, and I love to do most of my photographic work up there. But I also like infrequent occurences, especially when beautifully colored. To give you a small break from my favorite color combination, let me share this not-so-alpine capture of evening Lee Wave Clouds. Hope you like it anyway!
