I liked this sponge so much, I gave it a name...Megamouth. It actually doesn't look interesting at all in real life, but it was in the perfect place for this shot

Back in port for a day in between trips to the Eastern Fields of Papua New Guinea. This large school of bigeye jacks (Caranx sexfasciatus) was one of the highlights of the past 10 days at sea. Great viz, flat seas, cooperative marine life, terrific group of people...couldn't have asked for more.

This sea lion and I were playmates for a couple of hours one sunny day. Since he kept giving me kisses, I figured I should get a self portrait to mark the occasion

Even venomous, not so pretty fish can be made attractive. Sort of.

The adults aren't all that pretty, but sometimes the babies come in beautiful colors like this one. The little fish was sifting through sand, looking for food, which is why it looks like someone needs to wipe its chin with a paper towel

Friendly female humpback whale that was being pursued by five males

Perhaps the most nonchalant, laid-back singer I've ever met. Just sat there, and let me swim along whenever he came up for a breath. Visibility was awful, but being close meant it didn't matter so much

Here's some video footage of sperm whales that I took, on the Smithsonian website. They did a great job with editing and narration to explain sperm whale sounds

There are three of these fish that are resident at my favorite dive site in the whole world, Carl's Ultimate reef. I've known this particular fish since 2004, when it was already full grown. There's another big one there, and a much smaller one now. All of them hang out in a little alcove that sits from 25m to 35m from top to bottom. Going back to visit them in January 2012. Can't wait!

I just posted a summary of the record-breaking 48 humpback whale calf IDs we catalogued in Tonga this year:

This photo is just for fun. The humpback whales (a female with its calf) are in the background, behind the barracuda school. For some reason, the fish insisted on swimming in a vertical orientation and wouldn't turn sideways to pose nicely. Sigh

This is funny, in a twisted way, if you're a photographer or other creative artist who keeps getting requests for free photos.

If you're a photographer and deliberate about how to respond to requests for free images, I wrote a standard response and posted it at the attached link. Feel free to use it, amend it, whatever works for you.
I know I've responded in the heat of the moment in a less than diplomatic manner on many occasion, and regretted it, so I wrote this mostly for myself, but it occurred to me that other photographers must face this issue as well, especially after I saw how frustrated one of my friends +Matthew Oldfield got a while back with a similar request. I could totally relate.
This form letter is intended to be a constructive, diplomatic response, to deliver a firm, clear message, while explaining the reasons in a rational manner. I've used it already since posting, and it's worked.
If this strikes a chord with you and you'd like to add you name and link as a... more »

If you're in to underwater photography, you might want to consider entering the 2011 Ocean Art Photo Competition. There are a lot of great prizes up for grabs. I'm one of the judges, and I'm looking forward to seeing a lot of awesome photos!

Icebergs from the Antarctic Peninsula. These are the first substantial icebergs I had ever seen, and I cannot wait to return and see more someday.

Delicate nudibranchs are always fun to watch and photograph. The key to getting great images is to wait for them to do something interesting with a nice background.

A few snapshots from my 2011 humpback whale season. I've tentatively ID-ed 45 baby humpback whales this season, a record number. Have many hours of work ahead of me to confirm the IDs and prepare a summary file, which I'll post on my blog.
