Super excited to announce that +Popular Science has launched #CrowdGrant : a crowdfunding partnership with +RocketHub to make your brilliant, world-changing project ideas a reality.

See http://popsci.com/crowdgrant for details. You have until June 15 to submit (which you can do here: http://www.rockethub.com/partners/popularscience/).

So, what are you waiting for? Those liquid nitrogen-powered ice cream trucks, DIY biology labs, swimmer-rescuing drones, and petsitting robots won't build themselves...

Here's my +ScienceOnline wrap up of sorts. I was thinking on my flights home about the extreme melancholy we all feel (and tweet about) leaving this conference. And, being a writer, I started compiling my thoughts. Perhaps because I was overtired beyond all reason my thoughts quickly turned into a rant, and a very personal one at that. But it's also an honest rant, so I thought I'd share it without the benefit of editing after a solid 10 hours sleep.

Science Online was terrifying last year because I didn’t know anyone and didn’t really know what to do. This year I was more prepared, but also more terrified because more people know who I am. I missed the session on the Impostor Complex, but seeing the tweets and talking about it afterwards I immediately recognized that as my issue.

I was totally unprepared to find out that a lot of people know who I am. Andpeopl... more »

A little late to the G+ world, but what the hey.

The good news: A lot of movies in 2012 attracted hordes of people to the theater with the promise of science. (Science sells, woo!)

The bad news: Most of them rubbed me the wrong nerdy way. So I dug around for and researched what, exactly, the films got wrong and the egregiousness of their mistakes.

This +Popular Science gallery = the result. Apologies for not including everything -- I see oodles of science violations I left out -- but readers can stand only so much bitching (and I can stand to bitch only so much without writing an encyclopedic volume).

Thanks to everyone who created and came to our Curiosity hangout!

Now that I have a moment, I want to thank everyone who came to our Hangout last night. I know at one point we had 7000 people watching. It's incredible how a distant event on another planet can draw people on Earth together.

I also want to give out a special thanks to my friends +Fraser Cain and +Pamela Gay for organizing the Hangout and doing such a great job on air, and of course to all the guests like +Emily Lakdawalla, +Amy Shira Teitel, +Ian O'Neill, +Dave Mosher, Jill Tarter, and more.

To celebrate the landing of NASA's Curiosity Rover - the Mars Science Laboratory - we'll be running a special live hangout.

In conjunction with +CosmoQuest. We'll have all your favorite space/astronomy journalists on hand to discuss the mission in depth, and celebrate the landing live, when it happens.

Over the course of this 4-hour Google+ Hangout on Air, we'll interview members of the Curiosity team live in the hangout, as well as other special guests from the +The Planetary Society and the +SETI Institute.

+Scott Lewis and +Amy Shira Teitel will be on location at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to interview members of the engineering team, and show you what it's like to be at NASA during this amazing moment.

We'll update this event as we lock down more of the guests and participants. See you there! You can follow the hashtag #m... more »

New bill to block open access to publicly-funded research

The Research Works Act (HR 3699) is a new bill to repeal the open-access policy at the NIH and block similar policies at other federal agencies. Co-sponsored by Darrell Issa (R-CA) and Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), it was introduced on December 16, 2011, and referred to the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

The main section (Section 2) is brief: "No Federal agency may adopt, implement, maintain, continue, or otherwise engage in any policy, program, or other activity that -- (1) causes, permits, or authorizes network dissemination of any private-sector research work without the prior consent of the publisher of such work; or (2) requires that any actual or prospective author, or the employer of such an actual or prospective author, assent to network dissemination of a private-sector research work."... more »

Ok, planet Google:

What are some popular books you've heard of that were written in less than 1 month? E.g. Kerouac's On the Road (a few days?) or A Clockwork Orange (a few weeks?).

You'll probably think, "Well what about editing? And is that just the first draft? And what about..."

No. Stop. You're overthinking it.

Again, just popular books rumored to have a stunningly short genesis (the technicalities be damned!).
