+Diyang Tang +Leah Alpert and I made an awesome Google+ hangouts extension for the Linkedin hackathon this weekend. Just look at the images to play music!! (or, in our case, just to make a lot of noise). Check out the demo :)

Should everyone be able to code? Jeff Atwood doesn't think so -- http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2012/05/please-dont-learn-to-code.html -- and makes some good points, saying "before you go rushing out to learn to code, figure out what your problem actually is. Do you even have a problem? Can you explain it to others in a way they can understand? Have you researched the problem, and its possible solutions, deeply?"
But at the same time, "I think everybody should learn to code, for one simple reason: knowing how to code is hugely empowering. I can’t think of many other skills that enable you to create something from scratch and reach as many people as knowing how to set up a simple website."

Apparently "engineers don’t need to drink unicorn blood just to be good at visual design". This article gives some simple tips to get engineers started thinking about good design, it's worth a read.

I went to a holiday party last Saturday where a chef was using one of these "Anti-Griddles" to make frozen yogurt. This thing gets to -30F in about 5-10 minutes! The Chef would pour some on the griddle, add some fruit, and a few moments later it was both frozen solid and scrumptious.
There are some neat suggestions on the website such as Frozen S'Mores and Vanilla-orange swirl with strawberry wings. However, they have some that sound awful like Frozen salmon mousse.
What would you make on an anti-griddle?

Today we'll be having our first informal hangout for developers.google.com at 2:30pm PDT.
We figure it's been a couple weeks since we launched the +Platform on the new site, and wanted to take some time to talk about some of our ideas and plans — but more important to get some of your feedback during the very early stages of this project!
I'll be joined by our tech lead +Steven Hines, our content publishing system architect +Dan Sanderson, and the very capable +Jerjou Cheng and +Ashleigh Rentz. I've also asked +Will Norris and +Amy Walgenbach to stop by (but no guarantees!).
Stop by my profile stream at 2:30PDT this afternoon to join our hangout (and RSVP to the event using the attached link)!

“I’ll always stay connected with Apple. I hope that throughout my life I’ll sort of have the thread of my life and the thread of Apple weave in and out of each other, like a tapestry. There may be a few years when I’m not there, but I’ll always come back."

Here's an interesting video of Marissa Mayer giving a talk at Stanford back in 2006, where she highlights the 9 most important things she's learnt about innovation
Or you can skip to 36:25 to hear her answer the question "What will Google look like in 5 years?". She mentions interactive result pages (mixing videos and pictures into the results), voice technology (speak your query), and having computers in your car ("where's the nearest fast-food restaurant?"). She also talks about social networking (she calls myspace 'user crack'), and says it will expand to include messaging and photo-sharing. Seems like she was pretty spot-on :)

Do you know why mothers kiss their babies?
Babies crawl around in filthy environments, yet their immune systems aren't fully developed. When a mother kisses her baby, she gets a sample of whatever dirt is on the baby's skin. Her immune system analyzes it for pathogens, and the next day she produces breast milk specially tailored to kill whatever the baby was crawling around in the day before.

Circles are useful for more than just sharing with others
I have a "Read later" circle and a "Drafts" circle, both of which include only myself.
When I see a post I want to read later, I share it only with my "Read later" circle. Then when I have some time, I open that circle and read through (and delete) the saved posts.
When I have an idea for a post, but no time to write it, I draft a rough version and share it with my "Drafts" circle. I can edit the draft by using "Edit this post" from the dropdown menu. When the post is complete, I just copy it to a new post that I can then share to my circles, after which I delete the draft post.
You can easily extend these ideas to collaborative sharing and editing.
Have fun!
