(Sat01) Superheroes walking their sidekicks to school

Andry Rajoelina presents DC superheroes as the parents of their own little families, grabbing the hands of their now pint-sized sidekicks, except Green Lantern that one is just sad.

Clay rocks on Barsoom
The pale rock in the upper center of this image, about the size of a human forearm, includes a target called "Esperance," which was inspected by NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity. Data from the rover's alpha particle X-ray spectrometer (APXS) indicate that Esperance's composition is higher in aluminum and silica, and lower in calcium and iron, than other rocks Opportunity has examined in more than nine years on Mars. Preliminary interpretation points to clay mineral content due to intensive alteration by water. Image Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/Cornell/Arizona State Univ.

Transformer infinity v. Samsung Chromebook
My transformer prime took a spill today and seems non responsive screen. I use it at work during meetings for note taking (with the keyboard dock) checking email and calendar. At home maybe play a few games and watch movies on travel.
So with chrome can make movies and music offline for airplane trips?
Chrome-$250
Transformer infinity -$380
What would you get for my use case?

(Fri03) Curiosity gets all the fame while Opportunity just keeps on trucking

While Apollo 17 astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt visited Earth's moon for three days in December 1972, they drove their mission's Lunar Roving Vehicle 19.3 nautical miles (22.210 statute miles or 35.744 kilometers). That was the farthest total distance for any NASA vehicle driving on a world other than Earth until yesterday. The international record for driving distance on another world is still held by the Soviet Union's remote-controlled Lunokhod 2 rover, which traveled 23 miles (37 kilometers) on the surface of Earth's moon in 1973.

Magnolia has released the first official trailer for Europa Report, here's the official synopsis:
EUROPA REPORT follows a contemporary mission to Jupiter’s moon Europa to investigate the possible existence of alien life within our solar system. When unmanned probes suggest that a hidden ocean could exist underneath Europa’s icy surface and may contain single-celled life, Europa Ventures, a privately funded space exploration company, sends six of the best astronauts from around the world to confirm the data and explore the revolutionary discoveries that may lie in the Europan ocean. After a near-catastrophic technical failure that leads to loss of communication with Earth and the tragic death of a crewmember, the surviving astronauts must overcome the psychological and physical toll of deep space travel, and survive a discovery on Europa more profound than they had ever imagined.

(Thu09) Like a celestial burning ring of fire

Johnny Cash may have preferred this galaxy's burning ring of fire to the one he sang about falling into in his popular song. The "starburst ring" seen at center in red and yellow hues is not the product of love, as in the song, but is instead a frenetic region of star formation.

(Thu02) MRO counts how many times Mars gets hit by asteroids

Scientists using images from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter have estimated that the planet is bombarded by more than 200 small asteroids or bits of comets per year forming craters at least 12.8 feet (3.9 meters) across.

Researchers have identified 248 new impact sites on parts of the Martian surface in the past decade, using images from the spacecraft to determine when the craters appeared. The 200-per-year planetwide estimate is a calculation based on the number found in a systematic survey of a portion of the planet.

To create the first global, topographic map of Saturn's moon Titan, scientists analyzed data from Cassini and a mathematical process called splining. (Wed07) The ISS comm upgrades are really helping for science coordination

Communications from space are not as easy as just picking up a cell phone to reach out and touch someone. An Earth-to-ground chat comes at a premium; so, it's no surprise that two simultaneous chats would be something to celebrate. Payload developers and NASA's Payload Operations Integration Center team at the agency's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., are celebrating this advance, thanks to a communications hardware upgrade.

(Wed01) Gordo Cooper blasts off 50 years ago today marking the end of the Mercury Program

The Right Stuff - "Who's the best pilot you ever saw?"

On May 15, 1963, Gordon Cooper is launched into space aboard Faith 7 on the longest American space mission to that date. Faith 7 was the final flight of Project Mercury, the NASA program that put the first American into space in 1961 and the first astronaut into orbit in 1962. Cooper completed 22 orbits of the earth and spent 34 hours in space. He was the first American astronaut to spend more than a day in space. On the afternoon of May 16, Faith 7 landed safely in the Pacific Ocean, four miles from the recovery ship Kearsarge.

“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.

Babylon 5: 20th Anniversary Visual Celebration Premium Book

From Fans of J. Michael Straczynski on Facebook:
For years fans have been asking when someone's going to do a big, hardcover, coffee-table sized, high-quality book about the making and the art of Babylon 5. Something that goes behind the scenes in an intimate way, with striking color images and a detailed look at just how we made the series.

Well, it's here at last, just in time for the 20th Anniversary gathering at Phoenix Comic Con. (Note: I have no ownership of this company and derive no money from this book, though we've worked with Publishing 180 over the years on other projects, I just believe heartily in the quality of this book.)
