Had a great time at the Heronswood open house and plant sale. The gardens are incredible. The S'Klallam tribe and local volunteers have done a great job of restoring them.

Cool, in-depth article if you're a Bowie fan! I have been since I was a teenager, lo these many years. :)

Posting a nice big photo to see how it looks in the new layout!
Edit: Ha! It gave this post the hashtag "dogs" automatically!! No, no, Google, it's a #cat – you don't know #cats from dogs??

Restaurant review - a two-for-one! Harry's Chicken served at the Beveridge Place Pub.
My friend and I wanted to meet for a glass of wine and to try out the new Harry's Chicken on California Ave. But, as it happens, Harry's doesn't serve any alcohol. But they encouraged us to order and have the food delivered a couple of blocks down the street to Beveridge Place Pub. We hadn't been there before so decided to go for it.
Somewhat plain from the street, Beveridge Place is a really nice looking joint on the inside, with big comfy chairs and a huge wood bar. The sun was shining so we sat on the patio, though; it's small but surrounded with a lovely little garden and lots of nice plants. I asked for the house Cabernet, which I thought was a little on the spendy side at $8, during a time when most bars should be having happy hour.
The food arrived pr... more »

I'm really enjoying learning yoga; I did Crow pose last night! (This is not me, just an example of what it looks like.) I still can't do a headstand, though.

Just remember, folks; psychics don't do shit. Neither do astrologers, tarot readers or other scam artists. Can we please stop giving these frauds money?

Happy (belated) birthday to +Willie Nelson — you are my kind of celeb. I was never really a big country music fan, but my dad was, and Willie's music was a big part of my childhood.

I started using +feedly as a replacement for Google Reader; I wish Google would take a cue from its sparse layout. Lots of column width for images, a smooth collapsing sidebar on the left, optional Twitter, Facebook, etc. feeds on the right. I wish I'd tried it earlier; the Reader interface was all right, but seems clumsy by comparison now.

A couple of photos in the garden from last week, when it was still raining.
Now the sun is shining here in Seattle, and things are all bright and shiny, and life is good!

Late night snack. Soft boiled egg and toast; reminds me of being a kid in Germany.

Reading the Boston bomb suspect's Twitter feed (via Gawker, it's been confirmed his). Seems like an average clueless 20-something in so many ways, with hints of something else (easy to say after the fact, though).

Corydalis flexuosa 'Purple Leaf'
Got this pretty little thing at the Bloedel Reserve plant sale. The beautiful blue flowers are a nice contrast to the reddish-accented leaves.

Tulip 'Rembrandt’s Favorite.'
From a mixed bag of bulbs planted last fall; these came out looking spectacular.

Dear new (conservative) followers: I just learned that I was added to a conservative shared circle, and now a lot of folks are circling me who will probably be pretty disillusioned, so this is fair warning:
I am pro-gun (though I believe in waiting periods and background checks)
I am a carnivore
But I'm also
Pro-gay marriage
Pro-marijuana legalization
An Obama voter in both recent elections
An atheist
A feminist
And in most other ways, about as liberal as you can imagine.
So please consider whether you really want to keep me in your circles. Thanks, and Kumbaya and all that. ;)

Anyone who knows me even a little, knows that I fully support marriage equality. I'm too lazy to change my profile photo but I hope you'll stand with me in supporting it! Even if you personally don't care to marry someone of the same sex, it's not going to hurt you to let others do it, and it gives people the human rights they deserve. Come on, we're in the 21st century now. It's time to make this happen.

Happy first day of spring! The day we all wait for so longingly...though I know many of us are still in the middle of not-so-springy weather. We're having high winds and rain here in Seattle. How is it in your part of the world?

Damn it, +Google+! I love Reader and I use it daily...I have hundreds of meticulously organized feeds. I can't believe you're taking it away. Damn it.
Does anyone know of an RSS reader that is as good as Reader?

With the recent nuclear tests in North Korea, more people are turning their attention to that bizarre and isolated country. Here's something else that's happening in North Korea RIGHT NOW. You need to know this.
Warning; this is a very disturbing and gruesome post.
Right now, in North Korea, between 150,000 and 200,000 people are being held in its political prison camps, which have existed twice as long as Stalin's Soviet gulags and twelve times as long as the Nazi concentration camps. And they are just as horrific, if not more so. RIGHT NOW. TODAY.
These drawings were made by one of the very few prisoners to escape the camps. They show conditions in Camp 22, the Hoeryong concentration camp: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoeryong_concentration_camp

Today I learned about the free online classes offered by edX — thought it might benefit others. This is pretty cool.
edX is a not-for-profit enterprise of its founding partners, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University that offers online learning to on-campus students and to millions of people around the world...EdX currently offers HarvardX, MITx and BerkeleyX classes online for free. Beginning in fall 2013, edX will offer WellesleyX and GeorgetownX classes online for free. The University of Texas System includes nine universities and six health institutions. The edX institutions aim to extend their collective reach to build a global community of online students. Along with offering online courses, the three universities undertake research on how students learn and how technology can transform learning both on-campus and online throughout the world.

This is so sweet!! ♡
"I'm 82 and he's in his 60s and so we've been together for 38 years and I'm not ashamed of people knowing, it's just that it was such a personal thing, I didn't tell anybody," Nabors said. "I'm very happy that I've had a partner of 38 years and I feel very blessed. And, what can I tell you, I'm just very happy."

This is a fascinating documentary if you're interested in dogs. Some of the interesting segments were the ones on the dogo argentino, designed to both hunt ferociously and protect human children; the privately-bred Russian Sulimov dogs of which there are only 40 in the world; and the very sad genetic disorders that 1 in 4 purebred dogs suffer from. It's nicely filmed, with lots of great charismatic studio shots of various dog breeds.

Saslow and her colleagues analyzed data from a national survey of more than 1,300 American adults taken in 2004. They found that compassionate attitudes were linked with how many generous behaviors a person was likely to report. But this link was strongest in people who were atheists or only slightly religious, compared with people who were more strongly religious.
