Show Out Day and Drive: Sunday 10th March

For those in the UK, this weekend. Show Outs are events where people display their horses, vehicles, and sometimes living-wagons (vardos: trailers, and caravans) in all their glory and you'll likely see representations from a wide era of travelling history. There's a fair alongside and a horse-fair, too, so if you're a lover of cobs, vanners, trotters, and horse-drawn vehicles, you'll be in for a glorious day. Sorry we can't guarantee glorious weather for you but this is England ;)

Emergency shelter open for rough-sleepers in London

If you see anyone sleeping rough on London's streets during these days of extra-cold weather, you can call St. Mungo's outreach teams on 0870 3833333. Tell them the location where the person is/was and they'll get someone out to try to get them into the shelter.

Con Shiels, Jarrow March's last survivor

In 1936, two-hundred unemployed men marched 300 miles from Jarrow to London, carrying an 11,000-signature petition to the Government, after the ship-yard they'd worked at was closed down. The Jarrow March is one of the most famous protest marches in UK history and Con Shiels, who has died at the age of 96, was one of those men. He deserves to be remembered, alongside all those who pre-deceased him, for standing up against the poverty and unemployment so many suffered in The Great Depression.

+Rick Couture this was one I did at York Minster in 1987, this is about 2 and a half hours work, it is a shame I never had a photo of it finished as just the celtic knotwork around the edge was amazing by itself, I earnt about £120 a day on average, that was a lot of money in 1987 and the price of the pastels and chalk were expensive, I need to live in a place where it does not rain , am surte I could do something better than this now, I also done it various countries around europe too

The Natives are Restless

and Idle No More. First Nations' flash mob protests and circle dances have been happening across the country in response to Bill C45--which rewrites the Indian Act and changes environmental protections, in one fell swoop. Walked into the local Okanagan First Nation's flash mob at the mall several days before Christmas--hundreds of voices singing to drums. It was quite moving but then some of our best friends are Indians.

London skyline recreated in fruit and veg

It's not uncommon to play with your food. Sometimes, you create cute culinary constructions using only what's in front of you. Carl Warner seems to have created a whole new level with his Foodscapes, which are complete landscapes made entirely from food.

Carl Warner and his team of five model-makers spent three weeks crafting the famous London landmarks out of foods ranging from melons and tomatoes to asparagus. 

They carefully sculpted the buildings - while all the time fighting the challenge of how to keep the fresh and highly perishable fruit and vegetables looking their best for the final image.

After gluing it all together they then took this stunning image… before munching on the most impressive salad bar you have ever seen.

Cannabis 'makes pain more bearable'

...according to a study from the University of Oxford. At least, it does so for some people – and they hope to be able to accurately predict those it 'works' for, at some point in the future.

Now, can they just come up with a version that will work for me – and that doesn't make my brain as woozy and cotton-wool-filled as all my current meds do, please?

Listening to this NRA press conference. Message seems to be:

1) It's everybody else's fault.
2) There should be a National register of people with mental health problems but not a National register of people with guns.
3) The answer to gun-crime is more guns.
4) Arm all the schools.
5) Create militias and arm them.

Can't wait for the Doctor Who Christmas Special?

If you live in the UK, tomorrow on the BBC Red Button you can see the Doctor Who Prequel. That's 7.30pm, Freeview Channel 301/BBC Red Button, Thursday 20th December.

The slot runs 'til 8.55, so I'd imagine that they'll be showing the prequel on a loop – just in case you can't be in front of a telly at 7.30 sharp...

British astronomer and broadcaster Sir Patrick Moore has died, aged 89.

His friends and colleagues have said:
He "passed away peacefully at 12:25 BST this afternoon" at his home in Selsey, West Sussex,

"Sir Patrick presented the BBC programme The Sky At Night for over 50 years, making him the longest-running host of the same television show ever.

He wrote dozens of books on astronomy and his research was used by the US and the Russians in their space programmes.

A statement by his friends and staff said: "After a short spell in hospital last week, it was determined that no further treatment would benefit him, and it was his wish to spend his last days in his own home, Farthings, where he today passed on, in the company of close friends and carers and his cat Ptolemy."
