I got to spend a lot of time hanging out in the local hip-hop scene in Benghazi, Libya last week. Here's a recording I made of rapper Malik L showing a rhyme he's been working on. It'll be his first that's both in English and Arabic.

State Dept statement on recent violence in #Bahrain, including attack on @nabeelrajab:

The United States is deeply concerned by continuing incidents of violence in Bahrain between police and demonstrators. Officials from the United States Embassy in Manama met today with human rights activist Nabeel Rajab, who was injured during a demonstration on Friday; they also spoke with senior Bahraini government officials regarding the incident. While the facts surrounding the violence that transpired remain in dispute, we strongly urge the Government of Bahrain to undertake a full investigation to determine if excessive force was employed by police. In general we urge all demonstrators to refrain from acts of violence and for police and security forces also to avoid excessive use of force.

Beirut, city of contrasts.

"Our senses enable us to perceive only a minute portion of the outside world. Our hearing extends to a small distance. Our sight is impeded by intervening bodies and shadows. To know each other we must reach beyond the sphere of our sense perceptions. We must transmit our intelligence, travel, transport the materials and transfer the energies necessary for our existence.

"Following this thought we now realize, forcibly enough to dispense with argument, that of all other conquests of man, without exception, that which is most desirable, which would be most helpful in the establishment of universal peaceful relations is — the complete ANNIHILATION OF DISTANCE."

-Nikola Tesla, 1905

Things I saw while walking to the campus of American University in Beirut this morning (four blocks):

Four cats
An adoption sign for a dog, written in English
Cedar saplings
Cigarette butts
A Hezbullah flag - the only one I've seen in the neighborhood
Graffiti: "I'll call you a cab if you're drunk"
Graffiti: "Free Syria"
Graffiti: "Chaos," with an A for anarchy
Ripped posters advertising wireless Internet access
Posters of Dracula and Frankenstein advertising Halloween happy hours
Several dozen jars of Nutella at crepe stands
College students wearing ironic t-shirts
Fewer taxis than usual
Three banks
A Sbarro restaurant
A beautiful view of the Mediterranean; choppy seas.

Things I've noticed during my first 48 hours in Beirut:

Western coffee chains are everywhere – Starbucks, Costa, Caribou.

None of them seem to offer milk. Drink your coffee black and deal with it. Sugar is a whole other matter.

Any building older than 15 years has bullet holes in it.

It's very laid back, almost in an LA sort of way.

Speaking of which, American University of Beirut looks like the USC campus, if it were on a slope facing the ocean.

Unlike the former location of the Berlin Wall, there doesn't seem to be any memorial along the Green Line, which divided opposing sides during the civil war.

For every woman wearing a headscarf, I probably see at least 10 others who don't.

There seems to be a higher per-capita incidence of breast augmentation surgery than other cities I've visited.

So I'm getting my visa at Beirut's airport this afternoon and the immigration officer says, "I need to ask you a question."

"Okay," I said.

"Please spell obvious."

"Excuse me?" I replied.

"Perhaps I did not ask correctly; spell obvious, please."

"You mean O B V I O U S?"

"Yes," he continued. "Now please pronounce it."

"Obvious."

"So it is OB-vi-ous and not ob-VI-ous in English?"

"Yes."

"Okay, you may go now. Welcome to Lebanon."

This NPR story about the children of immigrants helping their parents navigate the complexities of the Internet struck me as really interesting, because it brings us full circle to where the discussion of digital natives and digital immigrants began.

At an education technology conference in 1995, I remember seeing a talk by Han Hua Chang, who at the time was a researcher at the Center for Children and Technology. He noted that we were just beginning to see online a replay of the "inverse power relationship" long observed in immigrant families when it comes to language fluency. The parents of a household, who may not speak English well, had to rely on their children for navigating day-to-day matters that require language proficiency. As the Internet was still new in '95, Han Hua observed that a similar pattern was beginning to happen online, where children were adapting quickly to... more »
