Shinae Choi Robinson880,200HOW COOKALONGS WORK:http://ridiculoushungry.blogspot.com/p/cookalongs.htmlHey, Cookalong Peeps!Since we voted overwhelmingly for African cuisine for this Cookalong, African it is!As you can imagine, with Africa being vast as it is, we are really just getting our feet wet with this month’s recipes, but I’ve tried to come up with two separate balanced menus, and choose solid recipes that appeal to a wide range of palates, for you to cook from. Both meals are totally adaptable to make with or without meat.I think you’ll find the ingredients fairly accessible and inexpensive for the most part, but if you have any questions as to substitutions, I am happy to call upon the collective wisdom of our foodnik community to help you find a solution. As always, if you'd like to share an African dish in the event that's not on the menu, please include a description of the dish in the comments under your photo. If you can provide a recipe, even better. :)So with no further ado:SUGGESTED MENU 1- AFRICAN GROUNDNUT (PEANUT STEW (maafe/maffé) - I’ll link to both a chicken and a vegetarian recipe. If you prefer seafood, that’s an easy substitution, but you would add the protein MUCH later in the cooking process.Recipes:https://plus.google.com/u/0/105466596306740968847/posts/8hHzsrrbwbM- PLAIN STEAMED LONG GRAIN OR JOLLOF RICE WITHOUT ADDITIONAL PROTEIN (West African rice pilaf)Jollof Recipe: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2013/03/28/recipe-for-jollof-rice-t_n_2972442.html- YE'ABESHA GOMEN (Ethiopian Collard Greens)Recipe: http://www.saveur.com/article/Recipes/Yeabesha-Gomen-Ethiopian-Collard-Greens- BANANA FRITTERS (which I think will go beautifully with a little vanilla bean ice cream and a drizzle of honey)Recipe: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Banana-Fritters-104781SUGGESTED MENU 2- CHICKEN OR VEGETABLE TAGINE (if you don’t have a tagine, that’s fine - you can just use a Dutch oven or stockpot).Recipes: https://plus.google.com/u/0/105466596306740968847/posts/DtwL9aNRqrU- BASIC COUSCOUS (You might like to add toasted nuts such as African Food Cookalong2013-04-21 09:00:0047

Danial Hallock6,197The Three Hundred"Completed" CopyAs most of you probably know by now, I have been working on a #circlemanagement  project for quite some time now, in which I sought to increase the vetting process that occurs when I add people to my circles.  As most of you also know, I've been absolutely swamped and have barely had time to share content (let alone post my own or curate circles), so it's taken me a while to get here. However, after only six months to the day (lucky coincidence) I've managed to finish what I would consider a mostly-complete copy of this circle.  You can see the vetting process and the history of it here (http://goo.gl/kqE8h), and as always I encourage you to add and share this circle as you see fit!If you're notified, you're in it!  If you do not wish to be included in any future circle shares, please let me know via private message. #circleshare   #sharingiscaring   #engagers  2013-04-20 13:17:463019813101

Shells Bells5,180Best of 2012 CircleThis circle is some of the G+ awesomeness that has enriched my life this year - and I am grateful.  A while back +Sean Cowen asked what G+ has meant to us.  After watching Brene Brown's TEDTalks (http://www.ted.com/speakers/brene_brown.html) I realize that for me, G+ has been a lesson in vulnerability and courage. I have been humbled by the courage of every one of you.  I love that women post no make-up pictures and that you all speak your minds (your clever, creative, crazy & beautiful minds...). I have been blown away by the public sharing regarding topics as deep as abuse and depression - talk about vulnerability and putting yourself out there - absolutely amazing.  By doing so, you have helped others in ways you may never know.  <3Inspiration's what you are to me, inspiration, look... see.  Led Zeppelin - Thank YouYou have inspired me. (warning TL:DR personal stuff below) Oh, & I did include some new peeps.  If they're freaks, blame +Ben Zaitz. This month, I gathered some courage and let three people see me in, what was to me, a position of vulnerability. The first was a very dear friend from Elementary School.  For the past few years, I avoided HIRLing because I was ashamed of my weight and I guess I didn't want to disappoint him.  The same reason recently kept me from seeing a dear High School friend.  I saw them and each did not care that I was not perfect, they love me for me.  Mann, it was great to see their faces again, talk in person and have some non-virtual hugs.  <3I attribute this change in thinking to your responses to a July post: https://plus.google.com/115807723984369772514/posts/Ui2TQBPuELKAmong the other awesome words from you peeps, +Alvin Stearns wrote, "Never again compare yourself to others so that you make unfair and useless judgments about yourself or others.  That includes comparing yourself to you in the past."  The third was that, with your encouragement on a private post, I actually asked a guy out.  I would have never even considered doing that a year ago.  (He has a gf, so no deal, but it's all good cause he was cool.)I know these are little things, but I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.  And thank you to +matthew rappaport, Bobbi Jo Woods and +Tiffany Henry for coordinating the first NYCHIRL. Due to my kiddies, I couldn't see +Daria Musk and +Ryan Van Sickle2012-12-31 06:09:4450026231

Danial Hallock4,130The Three HundredRough DraftA few weeks ago I posted a rather lengthy post about how I was changing my #circlemanagement  strategy from purpose based to engagement based (http://goo.gl/kqE8h).  This is the first rough draft of that circle, minus a few ninjas that prefer not to be shared out.  As such, the landscape of this circle will change drastically over the next few months; but I wanted to give the people who are following this circle a glimpse of what to expect.  As always, If you're notified you're in it. If you're in it, why not recommend a few people for me to circle up, or share the circle out with your stream? :D #thethreehundred   #circleshare   #sharingiscaring  2012-10-22 15:52:142971191078
Alex Grossman27,422Last time I shared a relevancy circle was back in July. From then until now (October 19), it's only changed by 7 people, and most but not all of that was near the end of the list. So, it's remarkably consistent. These 99 users are on top of my relevance list (plus me since I'm relevant to myself, so a total of 100). I excluded Pages that were in there so as to only have people. Most of these folks are engaging with me through posts or comments (though some are clearly more by e-mail, such as a family member) and the Circle is definitely more accurate now than last time. Does the algorithm get better over time due to more data? I still suspect that as you go down you end up with a number of close calls in which the algorithm can go either way. If anybody has more details on the relevancy algorithm, I'd still be curious and interested to learn more about it.Anyway, these people are relevant to me and truly help me enjoy my time sharing, talking, discussing, and hanging out on G+. So, thank you to all of you :)TGIF and have a great start to the weekend!P.S. - Typical inconsistent G+ - I could share the Movie Lovers Circle earlier today with about 130 people being notified. However, by mid-morning I couldn't notify the 99 people in this Circle. Now, I can again. But it appears that instead of setting a limit on the number of people in a circle, maybe they've set a limit on the number of people you could notify in a set period of time? Very strange. If anybody has any clue as to why this is, please let me know.2012-10-20 03:24:2710023124

I excluded Pages that were in there so as to only have people. Most of these folks are engaging with me through posts or comments (though some are clearly more by e-mail, such as a family member) and the Circle is surprisingly accurate until the last bit of it when some names appeared and others were left off. I suspect that as you go down you end up with a number of close calls in which the algorithm can go either way. If anybody has more details on the relevancy algorithm, I'd be curious to continue the discussions I've seen on other similar threads this week.Want to create your own? (instructions borrowed/stolen from +Max Huijgen )► Click circles on the tab on the right► Make sure relevance is selected (default)► Select the top 99 users. Alex Grossman24,072For my second Circle today for Follow Friday, here is my Respectful Politics Circle. This Circle is by request only and not for the faint of heart. It's filled with people who are passionate about politics and issues that impact society and come from across the political spectrum - the point is to have fun, learn and share. If you're interested in joining the discussions, please let me know and I can add you to this Circle. No commitment to share your own posts, but it is preferred that you at least comment semi-regularly so as to encourage discussion. Just keep in mind that if you do participate that you do so in a respectful and civil manner. Let your passion fill you, but always temper it with manners, respect and politeness. Bullies will not be tolerated. The point is not to "win" but to learn. #followfriday   #followfridaycircle   #politics  2012-07-20 15:10:0498901

There is a very false binary idea being presented that people are falling for. The idea that the only way to care for your neighbor, if they are in need, is to have the government do it. Anything else means you're a horrible person and Jesus hates you.

I'm much closer to the flip side on this. If YOU can't be bothered to give people food, to give them blankets and mittens, to smile and talk to them and treat them with dignity and instead you leave it to the government... YOU are the one who needs to do a morality check on yourself. As far as I know, Jesus didn't tell people to leave it up to Judean administration to care for those in need. He told people to get off their butts and get their hands dirty while they open their hearts.

Delphi also tells us to help those in need, directly, and as often as we can, with respect. Most religions and nonreligious ethical systems... more »

A bit crass, but if you have a product, be creative in looking for new markets

The most obvious market for your product may not be your biggest market. Find out where, and how, people are talking about your product/book/topic and see what they're up to. Never know what opportunities are out there.

Best #GlutenFree pizza (frozen) I've ever had.
Hell, it was the best frozen pizza I've had, period. The crust was better than most regular pizzas, it had cheese mixed in so it tasted slightly like cheddar goldfish - and I don't mean that in a negative. The mozzarella cheese topping was soft and fresh, like it had been shredded that day. And the uncured pepperoni? OMG - I want to eat a whole stick of it.

I've had many, many GF pizzas and not only was this the best frozen pizza, it was better than most every freshly made GF pizza I've had at pizza joints.

Be a Valentine Sweetie and show this band some love
I witnessed this band's birth a few years ago and I was BLOWN AWAY. Usually I hate folk music with a passion, but this is a bit more moody without being emo and I love it. So happy they are finally putting out a CD. But they need help with the last bit of costs so they can finish. Their goal amount is only $750 and if you back them, you get the CD in either physical format, digital, or both!

If you want to know why I am so crazy for them, take a listen to this song, "They Know" - http://crowcall.bandcamp.com/
Beautiful, haunting, catchy. Can't tell you how many times I've listened to this song!

You can imagine the constant state of paranoia a woman can live in when casual comments on message boards treat her as insignificant, stupid, and the like. This is the kind of shit we deal with on a regular basis. And then you wonder why we worry about sexism and stuff like that? It burns. It really does."

#StopTheNSA

The USA Freedom Act (S. 1599) is a bipartisan bill introd-uced by Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI).

If passed, this bill would be a substantial improvement to America’s laws regarding mass surveillance.

It brings new levels of transparency to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA court)
It introduces a special advocate to champion civil liberties in the FISA court
It appears to create new statutory limits on mass surveillance by the NSA.

However, this bill is a floor, not a ceiling. Here's how it could be improved:

It could clarify in plain language that bulk surveillance is illegal and prevent the FBI from issuing National Security Letters without prior review by a judge.Include language to stop the NSA from undermining international encryption standards.Have strongerlanguage to ... more »

Green Energy Standing Still

I'm fully supportive of getting off fossil fuels, if for no other reason, than to tell screwed up countries to go suck rocks since we don't need your oil anymore, but we are so illogical about this.

The anti-science far left opposes nuclear energy. Wind and solar energy works so much better when it is set to an individual home or business's needs and location (wind farms take more energy than they can produce).

But greater emphasis on conservation, which is often made illegal through local/state regulations, would help greatly. Cob or strawbale homes, depending on climate, are extremely energy efficient and have been around for centuries. Very kind on resources to build, too. Yet there's almost no place in the US where they are legal to build. Rain water catchment and graywater systems are illegal in many places, too.

Buffer is such a great app, when it works. The unfortunate thing is, it works sporadically.

The app is like a much easier version of HootSuite. You load up your posts and mark which social media you'd like to post it to. It then schedules it for prime posting time and gives you analytics. You can load it up with days of tweets and posts in just a few minutes.

The two bugs I encounter are the clock randomly resets to some other timezone so posts happen at 4am and it stops posting to one of your social media channels. So you have to check all the time and redo and reset up once every week or two. That makes it not a time saver.

If it were more reliable, I'd go from the free version to the paid version in a heartbeat. I'd hook it up to every page, group, and social media Chanel I have.

Lessons to learn from Ukrainian Protestors

Sharing this for two reasons:
1. Because (in case you haven't noticed) our country is showing no sign of slowing down its statist trajectory. I'm concerned a lack of will to peacefully push back now means true fighting later. Both major parties' elected officials are supportive of mass spying on citizens, our exceptionally high imprisonment rates, presidential kill lists, the militarization of law enforcement, etc, etc, etc. Many citizens are good with this too, all in the name of safety. But the government will go too far, at some point. The sooner we get to that point, the better the chance for a peaceful resolution. I DO NOT want violence and turmoil.

2. Because this destroys anti2A arguments that civilians have no chance in a civil war against the government. Anytime it is mentioned that the Right to Bear Arms is about citizens being able to defend against invasion by a foreign power AND being able to overthrow a tyrannical (statist) government at home, the very idea that citizens could do this is mocked.

They point to fighter planes and tanks and laugh at the thought of average people withstanding that.

First of all, you'd have an exceptionally hard time getting the military to engage fellow citizens on US soil. It's drilled into their heads that this can never, ever happen. The military would stand by. It would be police and some National Guard that citizens would be up against. Most police would not be too excited to shoot civilians. And if enough citizens were willing to either stand and fight or help with supplies and support, it'd happen like Ukraine.

We need to stop being manipulated into giving away our rights in exchange for the illusion of safety. We need to stop being manipulated into fighting and fearing each other. The War in Drugs and War on Terror has really just been a War on Citizens and a War on the Constitution. Both our major political parties are in a polygamist relationship with corporations and have successfully fractured society, turning citizen against citizen.

Otherwise we're going to have real war...in our streets as we fight for what we gave away a piece at a time.

Let's not do that, okay?

The Industrial Revolution's Effect on Creating Public Education

Before the Industrial Revolution education was private. But the IR brought about a change in needs because now everything was standardized on the assembly line. So two types of workers were needed - the worker standing in the line who needed to be about to read, write, and do basic arithmetic (sound familiar?) to do his job - and a smaller groups of managers who would be better trained and able to make limited decisions.

It would take too long and was cost-prohibitive for factory owners to train workers and managers themselves...so a group of industrialists (Henry Ford, John Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, etc) began to push for and create the modern public education system.

To say these men had the political power to do something like this is an understatement.

Then, as now, public education focuses on how to teach your kids the 3 R's - reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic. They do get a bit of liberal arts thrown in there, but neither STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) nor critical thinking (Socratic method which teaches through logic and questioning everything and not accepting things on face value) are a focus. Unlike "prepatory" private schools, both then and now, who mirror image this focus.

In public school, kids are put into an assembly line. They are grouped by age rather than skills and everyone receives a standardized curriculum. They're a widget with overworked and understaffed teachers in place of line workers. (How can we expect teachers to work miracles in this situation??) Every year kids are given a battery of standardized tests and if they pass, they move to the next level. Classes were (and are) divided into set time periods which are dismissed by a bell, just like on an assembly line. The curriculum is set up into "credit hours" which used to be called Carnegie Units. After the public school finished producing literate workers ready for the assembly line, the top students went to college to learn skills for management.

Our current public education system was designed and built to produce factory workers. And it has done an excellent job. There are pros and cons to this and a major pro is movement between economic classes. But we no longer need factory workers in such large numbers.

And now we have another shift in what companies need from their workers. Now we need workers to have some level of critical thinking skills, but our current system just wasn't set up for that. It was set up as an assembly line to turn out interchangeable cogs with standardized skills.

Just like in the IR, industry leaders believe it is too costly and time consuming to train workers in the way they wish them to be trained. So over the past 3 years Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Oracle have been meeting with President Obama about how education needs to change.

Education WILL change in the US. It has to because the needs of our economy is changing. How it will change and what it will look like - well...that's the question, isn't it?

But it wasn't created for the benefit of kids, it was created for our economic needs. And it won't change to benefit the kids, it will do so because our economic needs are changing. If it does end up benefiting our kids, that will be a by-product and one brought about by some seriously dedicated teachers.___

Elected officials shouldn't live in an echo chamber.

Here's a clip from the Burnsville City Council Candidates Forum. I had a 102 fever with the flu (Oh Joy!) Running for office has been a weird, fun, and sometimes frustrating ride. I'm up against two VERY entrenched incumbents who bring new meaning to the term "cronyism." They spent most of the forum complimenting one another and asking people to vote for both of them because they're such good friends and think just alike. I'm campaigning hard, going door to door. We'll see what happen on November 4th.

Best #GlutenFree bread ever

Most gf bread is dry and tastes like crap. I've tried baking my own and buying fresh from a bakery. But this 7 grain bread by Canyon Bakehouse
Is amazing. Moist, delicious. So good i could eat it plain right out of the bag. You can buy it at Target in the bakery section. I sound like a commercial. But damn...so good i had to share.

WHAT WE CAN DO

Congress is considering two major bills.

The USA Freedom Act curtails NSA surveillance abuses. The FISA Improvements Act attempts to legalize bulk data collection of phone records.

We need to tell Congress to pass the USA Freedom Act and amend it to make it even stronger.

The SOPA and PIPA protests were successful because we all took part, as a community. As Aaron Swartz put it, everybody "made themselves the hero of their own story." We can set a date, but we need all of you, the users of the Internet, to make it a movement.

This cartoon is an excellent example of how we have made it ethically superior to totally abdicate our responsibility to care for one another. ___

Because our religions, like so many groups, has a history of covering up and making excuses for mostly male predators. Mostly in the past, but it exists. We aren't special in that regard, it's in US culture, but we pretend we are better than that.

Well...with this arrest, it's starting to all come out. All the dirty secrets. All the victims told to shut up and not hurt such a respected person with their drama.

Nexus 7 weird battery fix (slow charge)

I've had my Nexus 7 for over a year and like many, many, many, many 7 owners I experience the supreme frustration of a slow charging battery. Like charging it all damn night and not waking up to a fully charged battery.

And yes....we're all using the original cord and wall plug thankyouverymuch. And yes, this problem happens randomly to people with old and new versions of the 7.

The most common "fix" is to plug the 7 into the wall and then plug/unplug/plug super fast 5 or more times. This evidently resets some weird thing in the software that gets hosed up EVERY DAMN TIME THEY UPDATE THE SOFTWARE. You can see the difference in charging from my screen cap.

So if you're having charging problems with slow charging of your Nexus 7, give the plug/unplug/plug thing a try. Or sacrifice a goat and... more »

Changing a culture of violence to a culture of peaceful coexistence

When I talk about a culture of violence, I'm not talking about video games or murders. That's just a by product, a symptom. I'm talking about the very basis of our culture and how it is so steeped in threats of force and violence we don't even see it as such anymore.

Our social compact, which is embodied in our government, is build on threats, coercion, and violence as a first, last, and only resort.

Some of you are laughing now, thinking that's preposterous. I mean, we're a democratic republic! We vote and agree, or agree to disagree.

Our social compact, which is embodied in our government, is build on threats, coercion, and violence as a first, last, and only resort.

Some of you are laughing now, thinking that's preposterous. I mean, we're a democratic republic! We vote and agree, or agree to disagree.

Just think about this: every single law we have, outside of a very small section of criminal code aimed at punishing violent acts or fraud, exist because one set of citizens want to use the full might of government to force all other citizens to act or not act in a certain way.

That doesn't sound like agreeing to disagree or trying to build agreement.

And what happens if you disobey those laws? The State takes your property (fines and confiscation) or takes you (jail).

We've been conditioned to not only accept this, but to prefer it. Don't like that your neighbor build a privacy fence? Get your city to ban fences over 4ft. Don't like smoke filled bars? Get your city or state to ban smoking in private businesses. Want people to recycle? Get your county to fine people for not separating out their recyclables.

What does this do to a culture? It becomes a culture where threats and force are valued over finding a way to work together. Domination is a preferred personality trait over graciousness.

I'm not against laws or consequences for things like assault, rape, and theft. I'm not against jail sentences or fines for those types of serious offenses. But when you jail more of your citizens than any other country on earth, you've gone way, way too far in criminalization. When it is harder to start a business and building a deck in your yard requires a pubic hearing you've gone way, way too far in using force to regulate citizen's every action.

What if, instead of choosing to use force against one another, we chose to seek agreement. To solicit one another for help. If we sought to educate and appeal to reason as our first resort? Or we learned the skill of truly agreeing to disagree? What if we no longer had the option to use force against those who haven't used force against us?

What would success look like then? What character traits would be valued? What kind of people would be admired? What skills would be taught in our schools?

I don't think it would be a utopia, by any means. But I think we'd have a less violent culture, with more freedom, and success would be measured in one's ability to encourage others to join you, rather than who can dominate whom.___

The print version of my glamping  book is slowly making its way to my Kickstarter Backers – they were sent to me in small boxes 10 at a time spread out over a 2 week period – weird. It’s been fun to see people post on social media as they receive the book in the mail.  The ebook version has already been emailed out to all Backers, so if you didn’t see it, please check your SPAM folder! The book is on sale at Amazon and customers are starting to order it.

I’ve been on pins and needles wondering what the reaction will be. Will they think it was worth backing? Was it worth the wait? Is it helpful? What will they say? Arghhh…the insecurities that devil authors. Or at least, this author.

I'm not going to bag on General Mills because that's the kind of reaction advertising is supposed to elicit.

I WILL bag on all my fellow white people who are gushing over this ad, simply because it shows a black dad, a white mom, and their child. They are treating this family like celebrities treat pets they haul around in purses.

"Oh how ADORBS! Aren't they cute? Don't you just love the hair - SO FUZZY I COULD DIE!"

I'd be fine if people were even moving along the lines of, "cool, show a normal family acting like a normal family so it becomes normal to those who have no direct experience and might be freaked out." And some people are right there - so good on you and I mean that sincerely.  But that's not the tone of many in regards to this commercial.

See...the reaction to the ad, just like the trendy pet, isn't about anyone else's well being. No, it's all about them. How progressive they are. How tolerant. Not one shred of racism in their hearts, no siree Bob. They want to rub it in your face.

"Look at me! I love this commercial, therefore I am a good person and I'm washed clean of all the racial sins of my forefathers by the milk in that little girl's bowl of Cheerios!"

If a person was  _really_  not bothered by a mixed race family, you would have thought, "Huh. Sweet commercial, but kinda boring," and moved right on to angst over Morpheus selling out.  Because that? That's worth raging about.___

What should government do when many people ignore a law & there's no injury or damage? There's two approaches to take. Decide that all of you are the problem and take steps to force compliance OR take a look at the rule and see if it's necessary or should be modified in some way. Which do you think is the more needed, common sense approach?

Praying for peace in Ukraine

You don't have to be religious to appreciate the power in this photo. Orthodox Priests are standing between police and protester, facing one way and praying, the facing the other way and praying. They've been doing it in shifts for hours and show no signs of stopping.

The tension is between proRussian and more nationalist sentiments. Mix in government corruption, pro-democracy, ethnic Russians and ethnic Ukrainians, and white power elements and you have all sorts of fun.

They're trying to create a living village type atmosphere for the future!  This year, the focus is going to be a traditional garden, dugout canoe, tree planting, and preparations for a long house.

Please share far and wide!  Let's see a brand new outdoor exhibit that shows how the original inhabitants of the OBX lived!

A room of one's own

It is true that having a space, if that's a spot on the kitchen table or an entire room, is needed if you do any type of creative work. I'm just getting set up in my new (to me) town home and I have an entire glorious room for writing and sewing. Can't wait to paint it and add shelves for storage. I am exceedingly fortunate that I have such a space.

I can't take it anymore. Ok. Dunn trial. Here's the deal.

He was convicted of 3 counts of 2nd degree attempted murder and will serve 60 years with a possible 15 year kicker. Dude is NEVER getting out of jail.

The jury hung on the charge of 1st degree murder because the DA got cute and wanted to over charge. IF the DA had charged it out at 2nd degree murder, he would have been convicted. The DA is planning on another trial for the murder charge, hopefully she pulls her head out of her butt and reduces the charge to 2nd degree murder.

Stand Your Ground was NOT invoked as a defense in this trial, nor in the Zimmerman trial. Defense went with simple defense saying the guys brandished a shotgun at him.

So this chick with Celiacs is going to drink an awesome craft beer

No joke. I'm going to crack open this APA and drink it down all casual like. And I'm going to enjoy every drop.

I haven't had beer very often, once I had to go #GlutenFree ... and the few gf beers I've had have bern ermented vomit with soy sprinkles on top. Not tastey.

This gf beer from Burning Brothers? Freakng amazing. Nice crisp, hoppy APA - can't tell it's gf. At all.

I think they only sell in Minnesota right now, but that should change.

So this chick with Celiacs is going to drink an awesome craft beer

Aghast at the ignorance

Talking with someone and they actually believe that Christianity saved Romans from the sin of polygamy. No kidding. they think that ancient Romans were polygamists and thankfully Christianity saved them from their wicked ways and introduced monogamy and marriage to the world.

Is there any point to even trying to correct such a completely wrong version of world history?

Winter Wonderland

The storm caused accidents, death, power outages, and many other problems. But it sure is beautiful.

Poland asks NATO to prepare to defend them against Russia

If you want an idea of how fast this is spinning out of control, Poland requested an Article 4 Consultation with NATO members.

"Under article 4 of the Treaty, any Ally can request consultations whenever, in the opinion of any of them, their territorial integrity, political independence or security is threatened."

Poland feels threatened enough that war will spill over their borders, along with Russian tanks or jets, that they are taking this step and giving NATO a heads up that they may need military help.

ARE YOU A FOOD CRIMINAL?

"If people let government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny."—Thomas Jefferson

Federal, state, and local laws combine to make criminals out of most of us - even for things like growing tomatoes and giving a hungry person our homemade lunch. I'll work to roll back absurd local ordinances that make common decency a criminal act or punish you for planting vegetables in your front yard.

Why I'm Hooked On Medium
Is it trash tv? Yes. Doesn't matter. I'm hooked on this tv series (netflix, thank you) because

Allison isn't a size 2 (she may be a blond white chick +Te-Erika Patterson , but at least we are spared the size 2, right?) and it is so refreshing to see a female lead who is closer to normal in size.

Her house is cluttered. Not showroom perfect. But within her means of living. As are her clothes and hair and makeup. They struggle with money, too. And drive shitty cars. And worry about bills.

Her kids aren't perfect, but they aren't set up as poor children to pity, either. And while Allison her husband are good parents, they aren't perfect. At all.

A realistic marriage is portrayed. They make love in the 15 minutes they have before the kids wake. They fight. They support one another. They have needs and... more »

Those are the reasons, outside of plot, of why I'm in love with this series. I'm only on season 4, so please TV gods, don't let them fuck this up.___

Suicide, the ultimate protest vote

There will always be a percentage of a population that takes their own life due to uniquely personal tragedy such as the death of a loved one, but how many more make the attempt due to cultural and political forces?

Suicide is attempted when there's an overwhelming feeling of hopelessness, a loss of self worth, or shame. It's the ultimate protest vote, the final word, a last ditch plea to notice that something is so very wrong that that they have no choice but to exit the system that is crushing them.

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US

GLTB teens are 3 times more likely to commit suicide than hetro teens, but suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for all US teens. As horrible as that is, it's actually adult in their prime (45 to 65) that have the highest suicide rate by age group.... more »

GLTB teens are 3 times more likely to commit suicide than hetro teens, but suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for all US teens. As horrible as that is, it's actually adult in their prime (45 to 65) that have the highest suicide rate by age group.

More active duty soldiers are dying from suicide than in combat in the Iraq War (2003-2011) and the War in Afghanistan (2001 - present).

Males, particularly white and First Nation males, kill themselves at a rate of 26+/- per 100,000. That's 4 times the rate than women.

The suicide rate in the US is rising.

Looking at who kills themselves it becomes more apparent that suicide shouldn't just been seen and treated as a personal mental heath issue, but should be seen as a series of interconnected cultural problems. The fact that rates differ by country tells us if we want to lower the rate, we need to treat the culture, not just target individuals in crisis.

What do you think our culture's problems are?

Google praises Glenn Beck

If you haven't been paying attention to the new media empire Beck is building, you're out of the loop. No matters your views on Beck's views, the man is not stupid or out of date and certainly blows the stereotype of conservatives as living in the past or not embracing new technology out of the water.

His podcasts are in the top 10 and the Blaze is the 10th most viral site on the net. His fusion of cable and internet is a case study for the transition from traditional media to new media and none of the traditional networks have even started to figure it out.

Somebody hasn't read their Homer

Pet peeve of mine is when people criticize things they obviously haven't read. The mythos of the war between the Greeks and Trojans isn't exactly an obscure mythos, but that's what makes many parts of it so greatly and univerally misunderstood. People hear a poorly done cliff notes version, and pass it along, and then someone else does a worse job and passes it along. Then, like in the game telephone, what we end up with is not the original message.  Add in a total loss of cultural context and there you go.

I'm not picking on Philip. Philip just got screwed by the game telephone and hasn't (yet) checked out the real book for himself.

But gah. Don't get me started on the Akhillios as a pouting bitch misunderstanding. If your quality of after life was determined in part by how honored you were by others... more »

If your quality of after life was determined in part by how honored you were by others during your life, you'd get pissy about anyone publicly disrespecting you, too. Especially when you know you are fated to die during that war. ___
