Drink and Click ™ YEG151Please meet at the front entrance of the Commerical Hotel on Whyte Ave at 6:00 pm.  I will be the one standing there with 3 lovely ladies who have agreed to model for us for the evening.  I am proposing to start off at the Blues on Whyte Pub and then proceed for a photowalk while it is still light.  We can then go back to the Blues on Whyte Pub or a different venue of our choosing for some drinks and eats then proceed with a further photowalk and repeat for as long as we wish.  Hope to see you all there.  Should you need to find us, please call or text me (Dawn) on my cell at 780-717-6245.  Bring lighting gear like flash as we will be photographing after sundown and possibly in an alley with lots of graffiti. So come prepared. Sorry for the confusion over multiple events - THIS is the correct one! Drink & Click YEG October "Shadow" Event (the RIGHT event is this one!)2013-10-05 18:00:0037
Justin Wondga11,739Feel free to invite others to this event! #yegfirespin We have insurance covered! Edmonton City Hall loves us! We have fire permit covered! Edmonton Fire Department loves us! I'm very happy to announce that after *nearly 2 months' worth of planning*, many e-mails, phone calls and meetings.... ....we are GREENLIT to do a firespin stunt at Edmonton City Hall Pool! Woo-hoo! We need photographers! If you have a camera that can do long-exposure in low light, grab your tripod, bring your gear and come shoot the stunt! It will look AWESOME in your portfolio! I'm not kidding- if your dSLR, compact or point-and-shoot camera can do an exposure as long as 15 seconds and has manual settings for aperture, range and focus, you can shoot this! Bring your wide-angle lenses if you have them! Film shooters, I would recommend the lowest ISO film you can get. We need volunteers! We need only 8 (eight) people (2 on each corner of the pool) to keep photobombers and curious people at a safe distance from the firespin! So, let this public event go viral - please tell your friends, please forward the invite, and then have them tell their friends, and so on, and so on.... ...we hope to see you there! We need all the support we can get! Thank you!FireSpin at City Hall!2013-09-12 21:00:0053

Lake Night

So, it's been some time since I posted a photo. Figured I would check and see if I still got it. This is an older photo that until recently I figured was garbage because it was too dark. I learned a new process that combines Lightroom and Photoshop and was able to make something out of it.
I think...

What do you think?

30 second long exposure at night. Hawrelak Park lake. You can just faintly make out some stars and a little bit of aurora.

I'm finding a greater affection for Black & White. You will probably be seeing a greater number of images done in this style in the near future. I find that B&W can really show off the detail and the viewer is less distracted by all the bright colours. However, there are still certain types of shots that must be in colour. So you will be seeing a good mix of both.

I am looking for a unique service. My mother has an old vinyl record that has a recording of her singing. It was pressed when she was young, she is now 85. I would like to have a digital copy of this but not just a transfer. It was recorded a long time ago so the quality is poor. I have heard of technology that can clean the noise out of old records. I'm wondering if this type of service exists near me in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

If anyone can provide me with information it would be greatly appreciated if I can preserve this cherished memory and share it with family.

Mt. Edith Cavell

Back in 2010 I was here with my low quality Kodak camera and took a photo I called Snowy Riverbed. Ever since I bought my Nikon I've been wanting to go back and retake the photo with a better quality camera. Well I finally got that chance and this is the result.

4 shots merged together into a panorama with photoshop. Edited and tweaked with Topaz Suite.

Wetlands

I love Canada's National Parks. As a photographer and artist they are often the theme of my images. But these beautiful lands are in danger. Threatened by the very government that is supposed to protect them. Bill C-38 drastically reduced funding to Elk Island Park. One of my favorite places. I can not support this government.

Bill C-38 administered major funding cuts to Environment Canada, Parks Canada, National Research Council, and Statistics Canada. It closed the Experimental Lakes Area, the Polar Environment Atmospheric Research Laboratory and the First Nations Statistical Institute. It scrapped the National Roundtable on the Economy and the Environment, one of the few federal voices acknowledging climate change. These cuts were enacted with little or no consultation with industry, provincial governments, environment or aboriginal groups.

Maligne Lake

Art is never finished, only abandoned. - Leonardo da Vinci

I've processed this image before but like many of the pieces I do I always go back and work on them again. Apparently this is a sign of a passionate artist. Often when I take a photo there is something about it that I don't like. So, when processing I try to change what I don't like and replace it with something that I do like. Some pieces take a few hours and some like this one took a few days. Most of that time is waiting for creative juices to flow to create the vision of what I want to see.

History is our teacher. I'm watching a documentary series on Netflix called Hitler and the Nazis. It starts when Hitler was a corporal during world war I and covers his rise to power and eventually the fall of Germany at the end of world war 2.

You want to talk about political insight. Oh man this show gives it to you. It's also very remarkable to see parallels with what is going on today. Hitlers first attempt to gain power was forceful and as a result he was sentenced to 9 months in prison. While in prison he wrote Mein Kampf which became the foundation for his legitimate rise to power.

It's very clear to me that 2 modern day political candidates are using similar methods that Hitler and his advisors used. I'm not saying that Donald Trump and Stephen Harper are like Hitler. No, far from it but you can see them using similar tactics that were created by the Nazis. Yes, other parties do it as well but not to the degree these 2 do. Of course their party objectives are completely different it's just the campaign methods of which I speak.

You can also see similarities in the people and how they are acting. Both Canada and the USA are becoming very polarized. This polarization is the point of this whole post. Political leaders are breeding and feeding intolerance amongst the people of their respective countries. This creates unrest and civil disobedience which in turn creates social unrest. Social unrest creates an untrusting people and those people are less likely to invest money. This fear to invest creates 2 things. A depressed economy and an opportunity for those with money to buy up stocks, real estate and other investments at a low cost. Then when things start to stabilize they can sell those investments at huge profits but you have to have money to weather the storm.

The 2 men that are promising the economy will be better with them are the very ones making it bad right now. Oh it will be better, that is for sure but it's all part of the plan.

I ask that you open your eyes to the manipulation that all governments use on us. Regardless of which party they belong to. Those that are the most ambitious are the most harmful to society. Countless times history has shown us this yet society still falls for it every time. And every time the people suffer because of one persons ambition.

There must be a better way. Please don't surrender to hate and intolerance. Embrace compassion and understanding and steer clear of anyone that makes fun of compassion and understanding as they are just using you. ___

Streak

The third and final shot from the lightning strikes that I captured the other night. Starting to think that I want to do some storm chasing.

Scatter

Another shot from yesterdays lightning storm. I set up the camera to take a shot every 9 secs and leave the shutter open for 8 secs at f/8 and 800 ISO. The camera was set to take 100 shots and out of that 100 I got about 3 really good lightning strikes. I might consider doing a stack where I pile all the strikes up into one shot. Might be cool if I can figure it out.

Touchdown

There was quite the light show last night. I decided to set the camera up pointing out our 9th story apartment window. Managed to catch a few cool lightning strikes.

My Lion. He's my trophy. I see him everyday as he's on my phone background.

He's still alive.

It seems to me that many people today misunderstand what school was meant to do.

I hear things like:

1) school never taught me how to balance a chequebook.

2) school never taught me how to write a resume or find a job.

3) school never taught me how to be a parent or husband/wife.

Well this I say unto you. School taught you how to solve problems. So figure it out!

Smoke Manipulation

It's been awhile since I've done any work like this. I have to try to come up with new ideas in order to keep making stuff like this. I don't like doing the same kind of work over and over. My goal here was to create a three dimensional representation from a two dimensional photograph. Using light and shadow to create the appearance of depth is probably one of my favorite things to do.

Let me know what you think.

Feel free to comment and/or share!

Happy New Year 2015 to my family and friends.

The last few years my friend +Karl Stevens and I have held a tradition of photographing the first sunrise of the new year. At 8:55am on January 1st of 2015 we photographed the first sunrise as it came up behind the Nanaksar Gurdwara Gursikh (Sikh Temple) which is located a short drive north of Edmonton.

This marks the dawn of a new day in a new year. May all of you have a wonderful year filled full of joy and love.

In the immortal words of The Doors: "You know the day destroys the night,
Night divides the day"

Peace be with you!
