Scott Jarvie440,267*POST YOUR GOOGLE+ ALBUM OF PICTURES* It's been very very popular event in the past and I'm finally doing it again tonight. _This time it will be more organized, more heads up than usual and even a live event._ *SHARE AN ALBUM/GALLERY LINK* It's simple and easy but a lot of work and very fun for all. You simply share an album here and I'll be going through every single one of the albums. Then I will +1 the pictures in the album that I'm really drawn to. *BENEFIT* Well it's simply if you'd love to know which pictures I like most.  I always loved knowing which pictures people really love of mine because it helps me have an eye for which pictures are best received. It's a huge part of becoming a better photographer in my opinion. _*To be able to put out great art is first to know what great art looks like*_ *ON AIR* This will be something new... I'm going to go through all the albums Live, Online as an On-Air hangout. I'll talk a little bit about what I'm doing. If the show goes well I'll keep it for later viewing on YouTube... if the recording isn't great I won't. *SPECIAL GUEST* Because I want to have an outloud conversation about what and why I'm doing things  I will have my good friend and great photographer @109486822103622036238 on the show to facilitate the discussion. She will also visit a lot of these albums and +1 pictures as well. We ask that everyone add her to a circle ... not just because she's awesome (though that's reason enough) but so that if any of these albums are by mistake limited access she will have access. *DIRECTIONS* 1. Paste a link of a Google+ image gallery 2. Put a title or description of what we'll see in the album 3.  *IMPORTANT* If you post a link you hereby give us permission to use a screenshare view of all those pictures and perhaps your profile in a recorded Youtube video. 4. Make sure the album is Public access 5. Add @100962871525684315897  @109486822103622036238 to your circles 6. Return the favor. Take some of the other people's albums and +1 some of your favorites. *IMPORTANT* It bears repeating: _If you post a link you hereby give us permission to use a screenshare view of all those pictures and your profile (maybe) in a recorded Youtube video._ Do not post a link if you are not ok with lots of people visiting that link in addition to us and are not ok with it being on video as well.Share your Album- A Jarvie PlusOne Critique Experience2012-09-12 05:30:00142

Lightroom CC 2015.2

There's a lot of negative feedback running around about the latest update. It's very scorched earth type stuff.

I have had a rather positive experience, so I want to throw that into the public record so you can make up your own mind.

The Magic of Still

There is real magic at when you're walking through the forest at dusk and with fresh snow on the ground. The silence literally pierces your soul. It's really hard to describe in words.

That all came together here at Lassen one evening. Have you ever been out in the snowy woods as the sun drifts below the horizon?

In Landscape photography, one of the tenets is to find your subject and then eliminate other objects from the frame that don't contribute to it. In the case of this water fall that is nearly 300 feet tall over 6 big drops through a deep heavily wooded canyon, you just can't get it all in a single shot. Maybe from the air it's possible, but ain't nobody got time for that.

Turn off the outside world and find inspiration in the quiet place of your personal thoughts.

It kind of goes with out saying that you can't control the weather. So to get a great landscape you've got to be ready for the light and you have to be a little lucky.

The key though is to actually get the shot when luck turns in your favor.

Are you ready?

Engineer Mountain Timelapse

This summer when I was out in Durango, I got the chance to climb Engineer. Having never shot a lick of time-lapse video, I just decided it was time while I was up there on the mountain.

So this is my first foray into shooting a lapse. I used Premiere to put this together. Next time I'll probably use LRTimelapse so I can de-flicker the footage.

What do you guys use?

I threw on my designer hat today, a hat that has never fit well. Despite my best efforts to screw this up, I managed to do something out of the ordinary. I made something decent.

You know it's okay when your wife asks, "You made that?" Why yes honey, I did!

Stay tuned for the time-lapse that this accompanies :D #visitdurango

Why would I go and shoot #AcroYoga  pictures someplace normal like the gym or the beach? That would just be too easy. You can tell here, but they are perched up at the top of a small waterfall. It was so fun getting to shoot them.

I used an #Einsten640  for the key light on the right and a speed light on the left. It was super tricky getting the lights dialed into the right position because the ground was anything but flat.

1/80th sec to get a as much ambient light as possible. f/8.0 at ISO 400.

We got our first real rain of the season today. It was the first time I've worn pants and a sweat shirt in ages. I couldn't help but think of fall color. I cannot wait!

It's great for Landscapes. It's great for Portraits!

This shot was definitely one of those "Ah ha" moments where things just clicked. I had always been drawn the long exposure photos of water, but this was the first time I nailed it. I was so amped that I spend the next couple of years shooting waterfalls. Especially the hard to find ones like this.
My Photoshop skills have improved over the years too, so last night I revisited this photo. It's a completely new edit. I hope you enjoy it. Much love!

I always like to ask my clients to go on adventures to shoot their portraits with me. You'd be surprised to know that only a few actually put in the #hustle  to shoot in a location like this waterfall. I'm always seeking out the adventurers!

Getting Freaky with the Color Lookup Adjustment Layer

I found myself experimenting with Color Lookups as a way to color grade a photo in strange and unusual ways. By random chance, I ended up on the Abstract setting, Sienna-blue. I kinda dig it!

Come off a new senior portrait shoot from Monday. I'm starting to get into the images and these ones stood out to me. Sometimes the subject just has it and it makes my job super easy.

Her smile and personality was so happy, that she was terrible and serious faced poses. She just couldn't do it.

How about it everyone? Lets do this little experiment proposed by +Tamara Pruessner to shake up what the algorithm shows us in our streams.

New Day's Hope

I have been doing a lot of thinking about how my main stream no longer shows everyone, or even a few and their newest posts, about how my own posts get increasingly smaller interaction, and how if my posts are doing that, then everyone's are.  I think the algorithm that governs what we see and what others see of our own stuff has gotten too restrictive.  And it frustrates me to no end - especially when I have 100 new posts in my stream and most are either 24 hours old, something I have already seen (and plussed or commented) or both.  Fresh isn't happening anymore and it is FRUSTRATING.

I don't normally notify anyone of my posts but for this, I am (and I am not even sure how many will get the notification - over 3500 in my circles).  What I am proposing is an experiment of sorts.  To all of those that comment on this post, I will go to your stream and plus the heck out of you, comment as much as possible, and over the next week, share a few my favorite posts.  Here is the catch - you have to share this post or something similar, calling your own circles to action.

Let's see if we can shake up the algorithm a bit.  Let's see if we can take back control of our streams LIKE WE SHOULD HAVE.  Let's see if our streams start showing our favorite people again.  A week from now, I will make a new post so I can see if my stream has changed... hopefully, mine will and so will yours.

It's a brand new year and while I'm not much of a resolution kind of guy, I do have one aspiration to reach for. Create More

It's simple and sometimes doing client work lacks any creativity at all and I want to actually create more this year.

On that note, here's a cool shot from a high school wrestling match. The used the Tilt-shift blur tool from the Photoshop blur gallery to enhance the DOF a bit further than the f/2.2 50mm netted. It really helped to separate them from the spectators behind them.

So how's the G+ community doing these days? I haven't been nearly as active this last year because much of my business has been very local and Facebook is much better for that.

It looks like only a fraction of the people I follow are active anymore and I would say the same for those that have circled me. My last post has zero interaction after four hours. Not one +1 from 59K followers. Kind of sad. I used to really like this place.

The blog has been pretty quiet lately because I've been busy with client work and a new project I'm excited to announce today. I've started a brand new podcast called The Photocast.

Going beyond the typical gear reviews and photography tips, I want to head into subjects that surround working photographers. Things like business, marketing and how I maintain my sanity balancing work, family and faith. This will also be an interesting show for amateur photographers who want to make the jump into full-time photography.

I need your help getting this started and off the ground. The easiest way you can help is by subscribing to my podcast. Next, If you know someone that might interested, let them know.

I'm also interesting in finding other working photographers that want to be a guest on the show. No broadcasting experience required :P

You know that feeling with you finished a long and tedious project? Yeah, I'm feeling it right now! Wanting to knock the parent's socks off, I spent a significant amount of time processing these. Well worth it. I only wish I could see all of their reactions first hand.

It's been raining for days (very grateful) and this morning I could see a touch of blue sky before it starts raining some more today. #photosphere

BTW, this is my first legit photo sphere. I just upgraded to the new Moto X from the Motorola RAZR. What a night and difference!

I had a great time getting to meet all the good folks in Cottonwood who came to see Santa on Saturday. I'm spending the day working on those portraits which is helping to put me in the Christmas spirit!

How about today we give back and share some new people to follow. Many of the people I have circled are not active here anymore.

I'll go first. Be sure to circle +Matt Hernandez to see amazing sports portraits. Mad skills with lighting and post processing!

Sometimes its really easy to get caught up in lighting and gear when you should just stick to the basics. Can you say family silhouette at sunset?

Yes, please!

Following up after my last post with Paisley going nuts on a fly that was on set, I thought this one was worthy of a #meme.

How would you caption this?

Todays a big #baseball day. The Giants are facing off against the Royals in game 7 and my family's last Fall Ball games are today as well. Should be an exciting evening.

To commemorate, a sparkley new baseball!

Getting the studio setup for some dogs that are coming in. I grabbed the first object I could find to get the light setup. It looks like I'm about to do the fanciest #Craigslist  ad on earth.

This is straight out of camera. #Strobist  settings: Background is a roll of white seamless. Two Alienbee 800 through two large softboxes on the background to make it go white. The main light was an Einstein through a socked beauty dish.

Got my hands on the Nikkor 200-400 f/4 today. The thing is a beast. It's taking a lot of strength to hand hold this steady enough to get a shot. I'll definitely be using a monopod at the hunt dog test I'm covering tomorrow.

Hahaha, I was looking at someone's portraits taken on a railroad track and my mind instantly started thinking about how train track shots were so cliche and overdone...but then I remember that I committed that sin early on in my career too.

Here's a notable one. You can tell the older one wasn't really into it. Aren't we all guilty of this one?

I've been at the fair all evening and I'm tired so I'm running dry on things to say. Just a pretty picture of the Ferris Wheel

I've been toiling all day to on one single page on my website, my sports page. After taking the evening off to coach a little league game, after sitting back down after the kids went to bed, I just now finished up at 12:33 PST. I just couldn't walk away until it was finished.

Winter sports are upon us. If your team or league still needs someone, get me on the calendar today!

Everyone Fails
I don't know if you know this, but everyone fails. Everyone! Only some of those people aren't failures because they keep moving forward having learned from their mistakes.

I recently made some big rookie mistakes and I wrote about how I'm able to keep moving forward. The goal is to create right?

A new wildfire sprung up today coating the western skies with smoke. So I head out to grab a few shots of anyone that was willing to step in front of the softbox. Matt volunteered. If only could hear the audio that accompanied this gallant pose.

Reminder: Cooler weather is upon us. Now is the perfect time to schedule senior and Christmas card family sessions. Call to get on the calendar.

Strobist Info: Einstein with a large softbox facing the sun. Ambient was -2 stops under. The smoke offered up that bright red rim light.

As my boys grow into their teens, they seem to loose some of their sweetness everyday. When I can get a picture that still has a piece of that, it seems to resonate with me more.

Don't let the time slip by, have photos taken of your kids before their grown and gone!

I got some prints and an album delivered today. Before I delivered them, I wanted to get a few nice pictures of them for the website. So I setup a simple lighting setup in the living room.

Lighting Info: I used a single Einstein softened with a large gridded softbox. I rotated the softbox towards the camera to prevent glare on the shiny surfaces and to feather the light. Notice how the top of the images have a natural gradation from dark to light. That's all in-camera.
