Craig Froehle4,629467 Plussers Well Worth FollowingSome curated recommendations to make your Tuesday a bit more interesting. I kept this circle largely free of celebrities, pages, and organizations, so these should (nearly) all be actual people. Enjoy!By the way, topic-wise, it's a bit of a potpourri, but with emphasis on technology, science, progressive politics, skepticism, and other fascinating things.Note that I don't always agree with everyone in this circle, so don't take this as an endorsement of their ideas...merely that they tend to be thoughtful when presenting them.2012-07-03 14:29:094671718
Kyle Beck66So, I know a lot of my friends who have joined +Google+ wonder "What's the point? I have a Facebook." Well that comparison was flawed from the beginning, although many people made it while trying to describe G+. There are similarities, but one of my favorite features in G+ has been the ability to share Circles with others. In fact I'm not sure I would see the point if I hadn't been shared this very circle by +Robert Scoble (IIRC) early on in my G+ membership. It has proven an invaluable source of up-to-the-minute Tech News over the past year and really showed me how G+ is very different from FB.See, when you visit FB the information you receive is solely from your family and real-life acquaintances. This can be great for keeping up with people you don't see regularly, etc., but it is very hard to reach out to new people who share your interests through FB. Not so on G+. You can create and share groups of friends and pages (Circles) to organize your social interests. In effect, this creates dynamic communities where you can choose who you interact with.Anyways, I hope you will consider adding this Circle, packed full of Tech Enthusiasts. If you don't really use G+ or wonder what the point is, that goes double for you!2012-06-30 00:28:364881003

Let's take a closer look at who our ancestors were.

A simple chemical circumstance led to a great moment in the history of our planet. There were many molecules in the primordial soup. Carl Sagan - COSMOS - Evolution

Let's take a closer look at who our ancestors were.

A simple chemical circumstance led to a great moment in the history of our planet. There were many molecules in the primordial soup. Some were attracted to water on one side and repelled by it on the other. This drove them together into a tiny enclosed spherical shell like a soap bubble, which protected the interior. Within the bubble, the ancestors of DNA found a home and the first cell arose.

It took hundreds of millions of years for tiny plants to evolve giving off oxygen. But that branch didn't lead to us. Bacteria that could breathe oxygen took over a billion years to evolve. From a naked nucleus, a cell developed with a nucleus inside. Some of these amoeba-like forms led eventually to plants. Others produced colonies with inside and outside cells performing different functions. Becoming a polyp attached to the ocean floor filtering food from the water and evolving little tentacles to direct food into a primitive mouth. This humble ancestor of ours also led to spiny-skinned armored animals with internal organs including our cousin, the starfish. But we don't come from starfish.

About 550 million years ago filter feeders evolved gill slits which were more efficient at straining food particles. One evolutionary branch led to acorn worms. Another led to a creature which swam freely in the larval stage  but, as an adult, was still firmly anchored to the ocean floor. Some became living hollow tubes. But others retained the larval forms throughout the life cycle  and became free-swimming adults with something like a backbone. Our ancestors now 500 million years ago, were jawless filter-feeding fish  a little like lampreys. Gradually, those tiny fish  evolved eyes and jaws. Fish then began to eat one another if you could swim fast, you survived. If you had jaws to eat with,  you could use your gills to breathe in the water. This is the way modern fish arose. During the summer, swamps and lakes dried up. Some fish evolved a primitive lung to breathe air until the rains came. Their brains were getting bigger. lf the rains didn't come, it was handy to be able to pull yourself  to the next swamp. That was a very important adaptation.

The first amphibians evolved, still with a fish-like tail. Amphibians, like fish, laid their eggs in water where they were easily eaten. But then a splendid new invention came along: The hard-shelled egg, laid on land where there were as yet no predators. Reptiles and turtles go back to those days. Many of the reptiles hatched on land never returned to the waters. Some became the dinosaurs. One line of dinosaurs developed feathers, useful for short flights. Today, the only living descendants of the dinosaurs are the birds. The great dinosaurs evolved along another branch. Some were the largest flesh-eaters ever to walk the land. But 65 million years ago they all mysteriously perished.

Meanwhile, the forerunners of the dinosaurs  were also evolving in a different direction. Small, scurrying creatures   with the young growing inside the mother's body. After the extinction of the dinosaurs, many different forms developed. The young were very immature at birth. In the marsupials, the wombat, for example and in the mammals, the young had to be taught how to survive. The brain grew larger still. Something like a shrew was the ancestor of all the mammals.

One line took to the trees, developing dexterity  stereo vision, larger brains and a curiosity about their environment. Some became baboons, but that's not the line to us. Apes and humans have a recent common ancestor. Bone for bone, muscle for muscle, molecule for molecule. There are almost no important differences between apes and humans.

Unlike the chimpanzee, our ancestors walked upright freeing their hands to poke and fix and experiment. We got smarter. We began to talk. Many collateral branches of the human family became extinct in the last few million years. We, with our brains and our hands, are the survivors.

There's an unbroken thread  that stretches from those first cells to us. Those are some of the things that molecules do  given 4 billion years of evolution.

I modelled at a photo shoot today. I got the chance to get in front of the camera for 6 photographers which was so much fun. It was great getting direction from so many different perspectives. I really enjoyed the chance to learn quite a bit about what direction I look best from. I'll post a bunch of shots as soon as I get them.

I thought I would share a shortlist of books to read if you are serious about getting a foundation in design. These are not your 'ohhh look at the pretty pictures or product' design books but rather a true foundation in understanding design. I know most of
you will have read these, but for those who are not in design, I think this list would help

Design for the Real World - Victor Papanek
Ways of Seeing - John Berger
Pioneers of Modern Design - Nokolaus Pevsner
The Design of Everyday Things - Donald A. Norman
The Thames and Hudson Encyclopaedia of 20th Centry Design and Designers - Guy Julier
Design since 1945 - Peter Dormer
Art in Modern Culture - Edited by Francis Fraschina and Johathan Harris
How Art Becomes History - Maurice Berger

The Art of Art History: A Critical Anthology - Edited by Donald Preziosi
Exploring the Ways of Mankind - Goldschmidt
The Prodigious Builders - Bernard Rudolfky

As I said, this is by no means a full list, but it will get you going for sure. I hope this list helps. Some may be hard to find and some are a bit long in the tooth, but are still relative. I think the Victor Papanek is still required reading in most university programs and it is from 1984. Pioneers of Modern Design was first published in 1936 and Ways of Seeing in 1975.

If you have one in your reading list I should have included, Please post it in the comments. I'm always looking for something new to put on my reading list.

Update 10 Oct

I'm adding in a few books on Design Thinking and a couple suggestions from other people.

Design Mangement - Kathryn Best
Design Thinking for Strategic Innovation - Mootee
The New Business of Design - IDCA
Building Design Strategy - Lockwood, Walton
A Pattern Language - Christopher Alexander et al.
The Ecological Approach to Visual Perception - James J. Gibson
I also suggest MISC Magazine which comes out quarterly.
And I just put, Design Driven Innovation by Verganti in my reading list

Thank you Steven Forth and Hilary Cinis___

I can think of more than a few movies that have used this premise.
But how far off reality is the underlying concept?

As a designer, every day I try to inject the user into the machine. We try to put emotion, empathy and understanding at the forefront of the products we design.

I question though, how much of the supposed thought is really just marketing hype and how much is actual empathy during the real design phase of development?

These are the stories I follow +Jody Swaney for. Some of the best on G+. Down to earth, real and giving you a glimpse of the world outside your own walls.

Stay behind the register

That’s what I’m supposed to do.

But then the u haul truck pulling the white Chevy on the car hauler pulls in. One of the straps has come loose and they are worried about losing the car going up the mountains. They should be, they probably will. I peek out the window of the store as this drama unfolds.

She, a heavy set 20 something, black woman, who looks exhausted from a day of moving, looks at it, shakes her head, touches the strap, follows it with her hand back around the front tire instead of tightly holding the front tire like it should be. She goes back to the truck. Now she comes back. She has a 6 or 7 year old daughter with her, and her husband, boyfriend, shack-up, truck driver or whatever. She points it out to him.

He is wearing a raiders cap, fresh and clean, kicked jauntily to the side, he is wearing clean starched baggy black jeans with the crotch somewhere in the area of his knees. He looks fresh and clean as if he’s been kicking it with his boys, or headed to the club. He weighs in about 135lbs. He is obviously a 20 something wanna be. He shrugs at the loose straps, he gestures that it will be fine and to get back into the truck.

She shakes her head no.

He comes into the store. He buys a Rock Star energy drink. He buys a single grape, swisher sweet cigar. He pretends she isn’t outside with her daughter trying to wrestle this strap into position. The wrenching bracket is jammed. He asks about a bathroom.

She gets on her cellphone. I don’t know who she’s calling. I have other customers but keep an eye on her, and her daughter, who matches her step for step, with the surveillance camera that allows me to watch the pumps and the store at the same time. She either has no signal or can’t reach anyone that can or will help.

Time passes. Her and her daughter come in for a cold drink. He wants to leave. She digs in her heals. He gets back in the truck, she goes out to wrestle some more with the jammed strap.

The store empties of customers. I step outside. She doesn’t look at me but pulls and pulls on the mechanism. She doesn’t understand how it works. I step forward.

“Can I help?”  I ask.

“I don’t think this looks the same as when we left Phoenix, and it doesn’t match the other side.” I follow her around to the other side as she points to the other tire of the white Chevy.

“Yea, the one side came loose. Probably wasn’t tight enough to begin with.”
Suddenly he is there.

“That fucking strap is fine, now get in the truck.” he says to her.

She ignores him so I do too.

“Can you fix it?”

I adjust the clip and wench the strap in reverse pulling it at the same time. I put a little shoulder into it and it comes loose. Click... click... Click....

“Get back in the truck.” He says to the little girl who has come out to see whats going on.

“I’m gonna have to get under the car hauler to get this loose. Tell me if anyone acts like they are going into the store.” I say as I climb beneath and wiggle the webbing of the strap loose from the springs of the car.

I’m back out in a few seconds, position the strap over the tire and re-thread in into the winching mechanism.

I am now covered in road grime but I tighten the strap and secure the end. I then go over to the other side and torque it down as well.

“That motha fucker woulda been just fine.” he says.

I look at him like a petulant child.

She ignores him, so do I.

“You have a good eye. In the next 16 mile you will climb about 4k feet. The road twists and switches back. Then you drop back down all the way to sea level as you arrive in San Diego. You would have lost this car and then you would have had one hell of a mess.”

She nods and he glares.

I turn to him, in an attempt to let him save face and at least appear to be man.

“I’d tighten them one more time when you get to Alpine, just to be on the safe side. Did you want me to show you once more how to tighten them?”

He turns and stomps back to the truck.

“Would you come the fuck on?” he says over his shoulder.

Our eyes lock for a second.

“I saw how you did it and I’ll make him stop in Alpine like you said.”

“Have a safe trip, about an hour and 40 minutes and you’ll be there.”

“Thank You so much” she says as she reaches into her pocket and takes out a crumpled 20 dollar bill.

“With that pretty little girl you’ll need that more than I will, I’m just doing my job.”

A tear rolls down her cheek, and she wipes it away.

“It’s been a really long day.” she says as she regains her composure.

“Things will get better, they always do.” I say as I walk into the store and she walks back towards the passenger side door of the truck.

This just happened at the Ocotillo Chevron. I am the night man.___These are the stories I follow +Jody Swaney for. Some of the best on G+. Down to earth, real and giving you a glimpse of the world outside your own walls.

This person stated that women should still be allowed to wear makeup because it doesn't change change what they look like.

I thought that if one sex can't wear make up neither should be allowed to for having their dl photo taken...

Personally I think you should have your photo taken looking as you look the majority of the time. If you are a guy who cross dresses and wears makeup, then that is how you should look in your photo. If you wear glasses, then wear glasses. Otherwise you don't look like you do in real life as in your photo and the officer could say it isn't you.
