Nikon D500 hands-on first impressions!
I tried the D500 for a few hours this afternoon, and all I can say is that I'm quite impressed. Put a fast XQD card in this bad boy and you can shoot continuously at 10fps for pretty much as long as you want. The autofocus is significantly better than the D810/D750 system, as I was able to effectively use my 200-500mm VR with TC-14EIII (f/8 effective) with only minor acquisition issues in really crappy light.

Why I post-process, in one image
The idea that there is something sacrosanct about "SOOC" settings just never made sense to me. Certainly the masters of photography used their darkrooms to process, push, pull, dodge & burn their images until they were satisfied with the end result.

For many situations, the as-shot image can look just fine. But why limit yourself to what your camera sets as its reality instead of presenting your personal artistic vision through a photograph?

No photograph is a true representation of reality, so make yours count. Contact me for how you can set up a 1-on-1 private online mentoring session to review, critique and process your images together.

B-17G
Sikorsky Airport, Milford, CT

I captured this HDR image hand-held in 2010. I decided to revisit it today and use newer software to make a more natural-looking image that still offered the impact of enhanced texture from HDR tone-mapping.
I merged the original NEFs in Lightroom's HDR Merge tool, then processed the image in Photoshop. I used Aurora HDR Pro (Macphun) to do single-image tone-mapping, which I then restricted using luminosity masks. I used other luminosity masks paired with curves adjustment layers in Photoshop to get the shadows and highlights where I wanted them to be. The final image was tweaked in LR, where I applied local adjustments and sharpening.

Feeling Knotty
Columbia Gorge, Oregon

Just for fun, I ran this image through Photoshop CC to adjust contrast and color using Luminosity Masks. The difference between it and an image I had previously processed in Lightroom alone were subtle, but I do prefer the PS version slightly. It's a case where a technique makes a good shot better (we're talking 5% differences maybe). Either version would look good, and most people wouldn't really see the differences outright.
Strive to make good shots and allow the processing to make them better, rather than relying on processing in the hope of turning bad shots into good ones.

Happy Sunday!

I can't wait to return to California in May and capture more sunsets like this one.

I have only one spot open on my Sonoma Coast Photo Safari May 15-20 if you want to join in the experience.

New Sigma Portrait Lens for Nikon/Canon/Sigma

Here's an interesting option just announced for portrait/wedding photographers using crop sensor DSLRs (Nikon DX, Canon EF)

This is a 50-100mm (2x) f/1.8 constant aperture zoom. That works out to roughly a 75-150mm equivalent field of view. With a constant f/1.8 aperture, you should be able to get some great subject isolation and creamy bokeh. The Sigma "Art" lens lineup is quite well-regarded by both Nikon and Canon shooters. The people I know who have these lenses love them!
