Google TV: Resurrection

+Google TV is an evolving platform that was way ahead of its time when it first came out and has been fighting "Google TV is dead" memes ever since, assisted by the first manufacturer Logitch bowing out from supporting their products very ungraciously. Even here at #io13  there were plenty of people looking at my Google TV logo on my shirt and saying "isn't that dead"? But the truth is quite different - and the amazingly strong response from developers attending Google I/O this year underscores that truth.

The truth is that Google TV's development team and management has undergone some important changes in recent months, but the platform itself has growing and enthusiastic support from a widening array of hardware vendors, apps developers and streaming media services - not to mention a quietly growing cadre of GTVe... more »

Over the past few months Google TV has gathered momentum by launching powerful features for our users such as the highest quality voice search of any TV product and strong manufacturer adoption of the platform. At Google I/O, it’s time to talk about developers and enabling them to bring more great experiences to TV.

Today, Google TV is moving to the latest version of Android (Jelly Bean, 4.2.2), and we’ve refactored Google TV so that our TV OEM partners can update to future versions of Android in a matter of weeks rather than months. For developers, this means you can build TV experiences using the latest Android APIs, including the NDK.

Today Google TV is also moving to the latest version of Chrome, and from now on Google TV benefits from Chrome updates on the same six week cycle that you’ve come to expect from Chrome. In Chrome on Google TV, we’ve added support forhardware... more »

#googletv  users will be interested.  Was reminded today that a fast network isn't all you need to watch streaming video at the highest quality.  You also need a fast DNS.  Modern stream, such as HLS, MPEG-Dash, or SmoothStreaming, all get lots of little files, and using a Content Distribution Network (CDN), means that those files might come from many different places.  That means, you've got the potential of lots of DNS lookups, even if your network is really fast, with a slow DNS, your going to have hiccups.

Fortunately, we've got the answer, 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (Google DNS) is really fast.  But you should always select the fastest for your network, so check out Namebench, a tool for characterizing your DNS and testing all the major systems - so you choose the fastest for your network.

These are great – I wish I could do this research, but I'd have to give up way too much.  But the nice folks at JWT get to find all this stuff out.  It's cool, it's what's happening.  Most of this stuff will probably fail, but the ideas will live on in some other form.  Perhaps you can find your next app idea here.  Very useful info for developers or anyone looking for new ideas to stimulate their creativity.

In this workshop we will teach you the skills to save the TV and the couch potatoes. We will cover software techniques required to build amazing mobile + TV experiences, relevant standards, and platforms that enable these experiences in a cost-effective, scalable and profitable way.
In our workshop, you will learn to build mobile and TV presence for a fictitious content network from the ground up in one day. You will start your day by creating fun video content, then syndicate it to YouTube, build a mobile and Google TV experience around it, and integrate analytics as well as monetization support. We are excited to announce the new Google TV add-on compatible with Android 3.2 for the Android SDK. It includes some bug fixes and the Chrome browser for Android emulator for Google TV.

Previously, Android emulator for Google TV was only supported on Linux systems with KVM. With this release, Google TV emulation is also supported on Windows and Mac operating systems. To get the best performance from your Android emulator for Google TV we highly recommend that you configure Virtual Machine Acceleration  for your operating system.  Among other improvements, web browsing and web search functionality are now supported through a new Browser application on the emulator.

The Emulator can be found in the Android SDK Manager > API Level 13 > Google TV Add On.
