Damien Boath662We have the honour to interview one of the great fantasy authors ever!Stephen Donaldson, author of the Thomas Covenant series (Lord Fouls Bane etc)If you like fantasy, then this is a must listen! Join us to ask questions of the man via our Q&A!From www.stephenrdonaldson.com     Born in 1947 in Cleveland, Ohio, Stephen R. Donaldson lived in India (where his father was a medical missionary) until 1963. He graduated from the College of Wooster (Ohio) in 1968, served two years as a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War, doing hospital work in Akron, then attended Kent State University, where he received his M.A. in English in 1971.     After dropping out of his Ph.D. program and moving to New Jersey in order to write fiction, Donaldson made his publishing debut with the first "Covenant" trilogy in 1977. That enabled him to move to a healthier climate. He now lives in New Mexico.     The novels for which he is best known have received a number of awards. However, the achievements of which he is most proud are the ones that seemed the most unlikely. In 1993 he received a Doctor of Literature degree from the College of Wooster, and in 1994 he gained a black belt in Shotokan karate from Sensei Mike Heister and Anshin Personal Defense.     After completing the five-book, seven-year Gap sequence of science fiction novels, Donaldson spent quite some time "on vacation." However, he has now returned to work. His most recent book prior to The Man Who Fought Alone was a second collection of short fiction, Reave the Just and Other Tales. He is currently hard at work on "The Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant".The Newbie Writers' Podcast Episode 131 - Stephen Donaldson!2014-05-03 01:00:003G+

Ole Olson47,340It has come to light that Google has started funding and supporting some of the most vile right wing extremist collectives and corporate front groups in America. Join us by changing your avatar and boycotting every single Google service for one day in protest. On Wednesday, December 11th make a serious attempt to not use anything Google. No Google Searches. No Google+. No gmail. No Youtube. No Google Calendar. No Blogger. No Google Maps. No Google Photos. No Google translate. No Google reverse image search. No Google Play. No Google Drive. No Google Books. No Google Shopping. Nothing.  (Android is immune since it is Open Source). If nothing else, just think of this as a challenge to see if you are able to spend a day on the internet without using a single Google product or service or just take the day off and enjoy the real world for a change. Google, many of us are your most loyal users, and we love the technical direction everything is heading by rolling all services into Google+ but it must be understood in no uncertain terms that we vehemently disagree with your decision to start to fund proto-fascist, right wing extremist, anti-environmental, anti-worker, and anti-science shock fronts like:•ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council)•American Conservative Union•Americans for Tax Reform•CATO Institute•Federalist Society•George Mason University Law School Law and Economics Center•Heritage Action•Mercatus Center•National Taxpayers Union•R Street Institute•Texas Public Policy Foundation______________________________________________More information:Don’t Be Evil? UNICEF USA349,544Join our End Trafficking team as they host a Google+ Hangout on Air to talk about the importance of addressing the demand for human trafficking. Human trafficking is a business, operating on the principles of supply and demand. There is a large demand for commercial sex, cheap labor, and cheap goods. As long as there is a demand, there will always be someone willing to meet the supply, even at the expense of another human being.  We'll be joined by our friends at CAASE and +Not For Sale's Free2Work. CAASE will discuss the demand for sex trafficking and how they're working to address it, specifically with youth. Not For Sale will share about the demand for cheap goods and therefore cheap labor and how their app, Free2Work, helps inform consumers about the purchases they make. A link to the Google+ Hangout on Air will be posted on this event page, as well End Trafficking's Twitter account and Google + Community, shortly before we go live.Twitter: https://twitter.com/EndTraffickGoogle+ Community: http://bit.ly/19JiLzs After our initial discussion, we will open it up to Q&A from the audience, so be sure to leave your questions for our panelists on this page! Why We Need to Address Demand2013-11-14 19:00:0096G+

Artists In The Plus1,739,472+Artists In The Plus is proud to bring you a very special "Concerts In The Plus!' with Guitar Legend +Preston Reed.(Banner Photo By +Ralf Hebauf )+Preston Reed has virtually reinvented how the acoustic guitar is played. Reed practices a flamboyant self-invented style, characterized by percussive techniques and simultaneous rhythm and melody lines that dance and ricochet around each other, giving his music a level of excitement that is unparalleled among today's guitarists.Playing an array of guitars from acoustic to electric to classical Reed's vast range of explosively original music will forever change your expectation of a guitarist.First-time listeners find it impossible to believe that they're hearing just the one musician, in real time. Reed attacks the entire instrument in a never-ending search for the orchestra he knows is lurking inside. At full tilt, his fingers, thumbs, fists and hands at once suggest a drummer, keyboardist, bassist and several guitarists at work. The most impressive thing about Reed's technique, though, is that it doesn't draw attention to itself. His compositions are far from abstract virtuosic displays; even without lyrics he creates vivid, engrossing scenes. Sometimes the effect is almost onomatopoetic. Reed generates visual stimuli with every tweak of his instrument, thus augmenting his wordless compositions with an aura of the poetic. Each tune is a story in itself with a potent, cinematic atmosphere and an almost tangible thread of communication between Preston Reed and the listener.Reed's entry into this guitar odyssey was inauspicious enough, his path thereafter largely self-discovered. A few chords learned from his guitar playing father, a brief, very brief, flirtation with the ukulele, clandestine practice sessions of his favourite Beatles and Stones songs on dad's guitar .... and then a too-strict classical guitar teacher led to premature retirement. At 16, however, Reed heard Jefferson Airplane's rootsy blues offshoot, Hot Tuna. His interest was rekindled big time. Acoustic guitar heroes John Fahey and Leo Kottke were studied, their styles absorbed but not imitated, and at this point things really begin to get interesting because, at 17, Reed, by now precociously proficient, played his first live gig, supporting beat poet Allen Ginsberg at the Smithsonian Institute.Just getting on a train from his native Armonk in New York State to Washington was a cool adventure. And it was just the first of many, not least of which was the one which resulted from his signing his first deal with a major record company, MCA, through the auspices of his friend, country singer-songwriter Lyle Lovett.Determined to make the most of this opportunity, Reed pushed himself to go beyond the standard fingerpicking styles he'd perfected. The result was the beginnings of Reeds startlingly innovative style, with its percus"Concerts In The Plus!" Preston Reed2013-05-26 21:00:0071G+

While it's tempting to write off that confidence as the result of watching one too many zombie movies, it should be no surprise that the MPAA is pushing for a new backroom deal. Dan Thompson2,147Here is my circle of writers.  My suggestion to you new G+ folks is to add the entire circle as its own circle, i.e. "Dan's Writing Circle".  Over time, move your favorites over into your own growing array of circles. In particular, though, I'd say pay attention to John Ward, Evo Terra, Nathan Lowell, Brook Johnson, and Jefferson Smith.2014-02-22 19:51:53249212CC G+

Matt Gibson920,723Ok so we are going to try something different here...As you may have noticed, I am sharing a circle of really cool people and pages for you to add to your circles.  If you want cool content from cool people - add the circle!  It's that simple!  If YOU would like your profile to be shared to almost 1 million people, leave me a comment that tells me a little bit about YOU.  What do you like?  What is your favorite music?  Where do you live?  Let's get to know each other!  What are your social network or website addresses (simply posting a link without telling me about YOU won't make the cut btw)? Here is an example:Hi!  My name is +Matt Gibson and I am an independent artist working on my 1st album!  I like all forms of music but I tend to lean towards metal.  I play guitar, piano, drums and saxophone as well as sing!  You can check out my website at www.crimsonsymphony.com and you can subscribe to my +YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/crimsonsymphonymusicI like books by great authors like Tolkien, +TERRY BROOKS  and Raymond Feist among others.  I read a lot of non-fiction as well on subjects like business, marketing, antiques and tech.I am an amateur gardener and I aspire to own my own beehives.I like reading your posts because you are such a handsome fellow with that long wavy hair and manly beard and....ahem ok you can skip that part unless you really mean it LOL.Now that's not hard is it?  Tell me about yourself and get your profile shared to a million people!  Not a bad deal eh?New and OLD friends can participate but no cheating or dumb comments like "add me" or "hi".  You should all thank +Amanda Blain for giving me this idea to steal for our benefit btw... so let the fun and networking begin!!PS If your comment is really cool you may find yourself in the next Cool People circle and who knows, maybe we will become friends or colleagues? 2013-10-03 00:47:03249721243CC G+

Dede King0The Fundie CircleIt's round. I've hand picked the ones I interact with not because they're relevant to me or because of what they post, but because I could pick them out of a line-up, state their name and at least one fact about them and they're generally wonderful people to know. The top 10 I'd probably bail out of jail and take a bullet for, but that's neither here nor there. One thing none of them can be accused of, is being soporific. As a disclaimer: Circle with caution or stalk quietly as the circle is filled with every type of G+ user that might not appeal to all tastes including:1. Photo fundies2. Meme fundies3. Gif fundies4. News link reshare fundies5. Art fundies6. Science fundies7. Music fundies8. Narcissistic fundies9. Selfie shot fundies10. Food fundies11. Passive-aggressive one liner vague posting fundies12. I started working on Chapter 10 of Silent Clarion at lunch this afternoon.

Naomi Bradleigh wanted a pony as a little girl. As a big strong woman, she wants an iron horse -- preferably nuclear-powered. :)

Chapter 5 comes out tomorrow.

Dammit. I guess Naomi Bradleigh will ride a a big red Conquest instead. :)

Oh, great. If hawks in the US government wanted a cassus belli for a third invasion of Iraq, ISIS' alleged murder of reporter James Foley is a hell of a good candidate.

Even better, these clowns managed to get their hands on American weapons, according to Vice. http://www.vice.com/read/isis-stole-some-shiny-new-weapons-from-the-iraqi-army-989 Anybody want to take bets on when conspiracy theorists will start blithering about how the US backed ISIS the way they originally backed Al-Qaeda and the Taliban?

Going by the headline alone, I was going to say that Sunil Datta thinks he's Morgan Stormrider, but a more apt comparison would be to Judge Dredd.

The latter considers himself justified, and is authorized by the law he enforces, to summarily execute suspects who put up a fight.

The problem is that the police are authorized to kick your ass if they think they're justified in doing so. Instead of complaining about the police, we need to elect officials who will fix the law.

This is a profoundly disturbing editorial. It's an op-ed written by a police officer in the Washington Post, and its message is very simple:

"If you don’t want to get shot, tased, pepper-sprayed, struck with a baton or thrown to the ground, just do what I tell you. Don’t argue with me, don’t call me names, don’t tell me that I can’t stop you, don’t say I’m a racist pig, don’t threaten that you’ll sue me and take away my badge. Don’t scream at me that you pay my salary, and don’t even think of aggressively walking towards me. Most field stops are complete in minutes. How difficult is it to cooperate for that long?"

I wish I could tell you that this article betrayed a sense of the absurd, or that it was meant in some kind of satirical fashion. It isn't. His argument is simple: you have no idea what's going on for that cop or what the cop is going through. The cop has the right to use whatever force is needed. So if you don't want to get shot, do everything the cop says, never argue, never object. Later, he says, you can "ask for a supervisor, lodge a complaint or contact civil rights organizations if you believe your rights were violated."

To list a few of the exceptionally obvious things which this ignores:

(1) All of the arguments that you don't know what a cop is going through, that this "routine traffic stop" is actually very dangerous for them, and so on, apply just as well to the person being stopped. In fact, especially if you don't look white and upper-class enough, that routine stop is even more dangerous for you than for the cop: the cop doesn't know if you're armed and willing to become violent, but (by Dutta's own admission) you do know that the cop is. Saying that people being stopped need to be respectful and do what the cop says, but that the cop isn't under any such obligation to anyone else, is an invitation for violence.

(2) These post facto remedies which he suggests are incredibly limited in their value. Go ahead and lodge a complaint; it will promptly be filed in the appropriate place. Under the POBOR (Peace Officers' Bill of Rights, a California law) and similar laws elsewhere, you get all sorts of guarantees here: for example, that if a decision is made in regards to your complaint, you will be notified of that decision within 30 days. It does not guarantee, for example, that a decision will actually be made, and in fact it guarantees that if a decision isn't made within a year, the officer will face no consequences from it. The police have a tremendous degree of immunity, and outside of very exceptional situations, are investigated only by an internal system.

(You can read the text of the POBOR here: https://www.cslea.com/legal/pobor . Other states have similar laws, but you should check your own state's laws for the details)

(3) If a police officer does something wrong during a stop, it can have serious consequences for you, which will not be redressed no matter what. As far as the police are concerned, an arrest isn't a "consequence," since the courts can easily throw it out; but go ahead and explain that to your employer when you're telling them why you didn't come to work. Being threatened and harassed every time you walk out the door in your neighborhood isn't a "consequence," because if the cop didn't have a good reason, they wouldn't have done anything.

Knowing that you might be publicly bullied and humiliated, in front of your children, your spouse, or your employer, that you may be searched, beaten, or arrested at any time -- and that such things happen routinely to you and everyone around you -- is something acceptable, in the view of this editorial, because you have the right to file a grievance later with the same organization which has decided that this behavior is, at a baseline, OK.

My purpose here isn't to say that people should be rude or threatening to cops. I'm saying that the obligation of police and citizens is a reciprocal obligation. It is absolutely true that the work of police is dangerous and complicated, and they require certain allowances in order to be able to do their jobs; however, if you translate that to "they must be granted unlimited authority over the citizenry, and must never be challenged, except after the fact and in very limited ways," then the police have been set up to become villains, not heroes.

Dutta's attitude is profoundly corrupted: he has taken the real and reasonable fears of police about doing their jobs, and expanded it into a notion of the police as being a class above the public, with tremendous powers of force and coercion, and subject to not even contradiction. If you heard this sort of statement from soldiers, you would think you were living in a military junta; if you hear this from police officers, you wonder if they think we are living in a junta.

h/t +Xenophrenia for the link.___Going by the headline alone, I was going to say that Sunil Datta thinks he's Morgan Stormrider, but a more apt comparison would be to Judge Dredd.

The latter considers himself justified, and is authorized by the law he enforces, to summarily execute suspects who put up a fight.

The problem is that the police are authorized to kick your ass if they think they're justified in doing so. Instead of complaining about the police, we need to elect officials who will fix the law.

Naomi Bradleigh wanted a pony as a little girl. As a big strong woman, she wants an iron horse -- preferably nuclear-powered. :)

Chapter 5 comes out tomorrow.

Why am I not surprised? The more I read about #Ferguson, the more convinced I become that the place needs #regimechange.

Unfortunately, that hasn't worked out since the occupation of Japan under MacArthur.

More details about #Ferguson emerge:

“Despite Ferguson’s relative poverty, fines and court fees comprise the second largest source of revenue for the city, a total of 2,635,400,” according to the ArchCity Defenders report. And in 2013, the Ferguson Municipal Court issued 24,532 arrest warrants and 12,018 cases, “or about 3 warrants and 1.5 cases per household.”

Might the city and law enforcement be somehow motivated to go after those segments of the population least likely to afford proper legal counsel?

I have to pick theme songs for each chapter of Silent Clarion, and I decided Duke Ellington's "Solitude" would be a suitable theme for Chapter Nine.

It's the sort of music Naomi might play at a Manhattan hotel bar to make a quick bit of money.

#saturdayscenes   #withoutbloodshed   #burnout

Abram Mellech took a hand off the wheel of his restored black Castille to pull at the collar chafing his throat. Everything seemed so simple. Of all the Disciples of the Watch, he was the one most reluctant to indulge in the pleasures of the flesh. This made him perfect for his mission. He adopted the guise of an ascetic, and became Sabaoth's right hand. As a prophet, he gathered and equipped an army willing to kill and die for their faith. When the time came, however, the Repentant in Christ would fight against the demon who dared call himself God.

He looked forward to reclaiming his true self and being Adramelech again. No longer a priest, but a deva who found demonic power and became an emanation of the tree of death. First, he would achieve a flow state, rip the damnable collar from his neck, and brush its ashes from his hands. He already missed Bathory's taste, and the heat of her kiss, despite only meeting her a few days ago. He would seek her next, and—should she permit it―take his fill.

A motorcyclist cut Abram off, forcing him to hit the brakes. He recognized the biker as a Sun Jester; the patch sewn on his jacket was distinguishable from that of the Fireclowns only by color. All he needed was to concentrate and draw power, and he could blow the bike and its rider off the road. Some of the Fireclowns might even thank him for eliminating one of their rivals. He shook his head and pulled at his collar again. "Grant me patience, Lord." Now I pray to one of my equals, and an enemy besides. The things I do to stay in character.

He managed to park underneath Boston's City Hall without further incident, and retrieved an attaché case containing payment for a final shipment of weapons from the trunk. One of Liebenthal's mercenaries, a heavily tattooed man with a thick red beard, greeted him and verified his identity before escorting him upstairs. He was muscular enough to handle one of the huge vintage motorcycles he and his fellow Fireclowns insisted upon riding, despite the age evident in his weathered face. Abram had no doubt he would handle the rifle slung across his back or the knives in his belt with similar ease. He shot Abram a sidelong glance as the elevator doors closed. "You want to be careful around Yojimbo."

Abram nodded, recognizing Munakata's nickname. "I usually am. Is there any particular reason for concern?"

"Yeah. The client sent us to the Phoenix Society chapter to bag some hostages. It didn't work out."

"What happened?"

"We got our asses kicked, and Liebenthal's pet samurai is still pissy because a woman saved us."

The elevator stopped, and opened its doors. As Abram stepped out, the biker caught his shoulder. "Hey, Rev. I've got a couple of minutes before I need to resume my post downstairs. You want to duck into one of these offices to hear my confession and let me do penance?"

Abram gently brushed off the man's hand. "Sorry. I took a vow of chastity. Christ's peace be upon you."

The staccato of rapid footsteps preceded the metallic hiss of a sword clearing its scabbard. The blade rent air, and hissed again as its owner sheathed it. The pattern's repetition led Abram to a long conference room in which all of the furniture stood stacked against the walls. Munakata's head snapped toward Abram to reveal a visage indistinguishable from Morgan Stormrider's save for a hairstyle out of fashion since the Meiji Restoration. He dressed in black, with the exception of a shirt matching his green eyes. His jacket hung from a coat rack near the door. Abram examined it, and noted the label. "Caderousse & Sons of Marseilles? I'm surprised you'd spare the expense."

Sheathing his katana, Munakata found a chair for Abram. "I'm a sellsword, not a barbarian." His eyes fixed on a crow perched outside the windows. "Are you here for the last shipment?"

"Among other things. What happened last night?"

"Liebenthal thought there might be remnants of the Phoenix Society's presence in Boston: support staff, Adversaries just returned from assignments, and the like. He ordered me to lead a detachment of Fireclowns and do a sweep. We found a couple of Morgan Stormrider's friends, Sid Schneider and Edmund Cohen." Munakata spat the names. "They drew their weapons first. I came within millimeters of tearing out Schneider's throat, but the son of a bitch must have been sparring with Stormrider."

Witness Protocol tells a different story, but I gain nothing from pressing the matter. "I understand you had a guardian angel. Who was she?"

"Doubtless you're better acquainted with her than I." Munakata paused, considering the sheathed blade in his hands. When he spoke again, it was almost to himself, as an afterthought. "Schneider seemed aware of the asura emulators' existence. He knew how to put me down permanently. Why did he hold back?"

Here was a question Abram could answer. Despite playing the traitor, he retained access to the Sephiroth. They answered to Imaginos, and were in on the plot. "Stormrider's orders specified no fatalities."

"His orders usually do." Munakata's smile held a cynical edge. "Imaginos can't just tell the man he needs so-and-so rubbed out. The Phoenix Society isn't that sort of organization. Regardless, if he's done with you, you get a choice: Die facing an Adversary, or die with a shank in the back."

Abram's tone lacked its usual gentle warmth, which he used to soothe those burdened by guilt, and ease their consciences for a reasonable fee. "According to Scripture, those who take the sword die by the sword."

"Better to die by the sword than on the cross. Where's Stormrider?"

"He recently arrived in Boston, and brought a companion."

"Who?"

"Naomi Bradleigh. Imaginos expects you to leave his daughter alone."

Munakata turned his back on Abram, who followed his gaze out the window. A pack of bikers riding two abreast approached City Hall. "If I refrain from drawing my blade against his daughter, it will be because she did not first threaten me."

"You showed no such scruples when you cut down Rutherford, Collins, and Gabriel. Your technique left them no time to draw weapons."

"They took bribes from Liebenthal, and are therefore a disgrace to the IRD corps." Munakata looked away. "If I let them live, the Phoenix Society would send somebody other than Stormrider, which does not suit my employer's purpose. As an ex-Adversary, my sword was the only due process they deserved."

"I understand you have no reason to care, but allow me to finish my message. Imaginos hopes you'll rouse Stormrider's curiosity concerning his nature."

"If he wants to learn about CPMD, he can use the network. Why concern yourself?"

"The souls of all Christ's children are my concern. I can ease the weight of your sins."

"My sins made me what I am. I will keep them, and you can keep your Christ." Munakata rose, and grabbed his jacket. He tucked it and his katana under his right arm. "I need some fresh air. Mr. Liebenthal is in his office. He's expecting you."

I've been thinking about this a great deal lately, but haven't reached any coherent conclusions aside from deciding that replacing all exiting social programs with a universal basic income would be a good idea. Medicare for all, and Social Security for all.

Yes, its "socialism". I don't care. I've come to think that socialism is the only thing that can save commerce from capitalism.

Chapter Four

I would never have believed Director Chattan married, let alone a divorcee, if Jacqueline hadn’t told me. Not to say he’s incapable of attracting a woman or earning her trust, respect, and affection. He cuts a fine figure in uniform, and I’ll admit to occasionally and discreetly ogling him while he does physical training with us. He’s a capable fencer, and gracious when defeated.

He’s also an intelligent and capable commander, dedicated to the whole of the Phoenix Society, and its ideals. He likes to visit the desks of Adversaries working on clerical tasks because they aren’t in PT or out in the field, and surprise us with questions on law, procedure, and tactics if he thinks we’re taking a break. He calls it MT, mental training.

The obstacle to my belief is his professionalism. When he’s on the job, he doesn’t talk about anything else. I suspect he brings his work home with him. Would a man who seems to care only about the Phoenix Society’s mission put duty aside long enough to remember that he’s also a person, with a person’s needs for connection and release?

All of which I kept to myself as I stepped into Chattan’s office immediately after logging in and checking my mail. He put aside his sandwich, looked up from his book, , and indicated a chair. “Feeling better today, Adversary Bradleigh?”

About Silent Clarion

My curiosity might get me killed. I thought I needed a vacation from my duties as an Adversary in service to the Phoenix Society. After learning about unexplained disappearances in a little town called Clarion, I couldn’t stop myself from checking it out.

Now I must protect a witness to two murders without any protection but my sword. I must identify a murderer who strikes from the shadows. I must expose secrets the Phoenix Society's executive council is hellbent on keeping buried.

I have no support but an ally I dare not trust. If I cannot break the silence hiding what happened in Clarion’s past, I have no future. I must discover the truth about Project Harker. Failure is not an option.

Silent Clarion is a new-adult science-fiction thriller by Matthew Graybosch, set before the events of the Starbreaker novels. Meet Naomi Bradleigh as an Adversary, seventeen years before Without Bloodshed.

Silent Clarion is serialized and published at Curiosity Quills, every Wednesday.

Don't be a one-trick pony.
Victory isn't the end.

Reasons Dark Souls II Is Not for Kids

I will acknowledge a single reason to deny your children the frustration and joy of Dark Souls II. If you're one of those responsible parents who take the time to read the ESRB warnings for games, and only choose "age appropriate" games for your kids, I understand. Did this warning for Dark Souls II put you off?

This is a role-playing game in which players assume the role of an undead fighter in the realm of Drangleic. Players traverse dungeon-like settings and battle a variety of fantastical enemies (e.g., ghouls, zombies, skeletons, giant rats) to gain souls. Players use knives, swords, and arrows to defeat enemies. Combat is highlighted by cries of pain and small splashes of blood. Some locations depict instances of blood and gore: a giant snake boss holding its severed head; a giant boss creature composed of hundreds of corpses; dead ogres near a pool of blood; a torture device with streaks of blood. During the course of the game, a boss creature appears partially topless (e.g. hair barely covering breasts). The words "bastard" and "prick" can be heard in the dialogue.

The Kids Will Be Fine

If the above made you wary, I would understand. Here's the rub: if you let your kids watch TV news, or surf the web unsupervised, chances are they've seen worse. Much worse.

Instead, think of the valuable moral instruction From Software and Namco/Bandai is helping you provide, especially if you sit with your children as they play -- which you should be doing anyway.

Failure is inevitable.

Dark Souls II isn't an easy, forgiving game. If you screw up, you get hurt. If you screw up badly enough, you die. Just like real life.

Unlike real life, however, you can take a deep breath, think over what went wrong, and try again from the last bonfire at which you rested. Try not to die again before recovering your souls.

Concentrate on the task at hand.

If you're thinking about anything except the enemy you're currently trying to fight, that enemy is going to kill you. There's no time-out in Dark Souls II. Hell, there isn't even a pause button.

Be patient.

You're going to die in Dark Souls II. You're going to die often. You're going to die because you tried to get a quick kill. You're going to die because you dodged the wrong way and rolled off a cliff. You're going to die because somebody invaded your game and was better than you.

You're going to die in real life, too. Accept it, take a deep breath, and remember that your feelings don't matter. Control the things you can control, and let everything else do their worst.

And if you're gonna die, die with your boots on.

[youtube=Iron Maiden- Die With Your Boots On]

Know yourself.

Understanding the character you've chosen to play is the first step to success in Dark Souls II. Your character's capabilities will help determine which tactics are most likely to work in the game. Tactics suited to for a character made to wear heavy armor and wield massive weapons aren't ideal for a character built for speed or a character built to use magic.

Your own capabilities will help determine your options in life, as well. You must decide what skills and abilities you will cultivate. Will you build on existing strengths, or improve on your weaknesses? Do you even know your strengths and weaknesses?

Know your enemy.

Just as you must know your own character in Dark Souls II, you should also understand the enemies you've set out to fight. Every enemy type is different and will fight differently.

Learn the enemy's attack pattern, and you can exploit it. Learn the enemy's weaknesses and you can strike with weapons capable of inflicting more damage faster.

You can't solve a problem you don't understand. You'll just get stuck, flailing away to no avail.

Know your tools.

You'll likely collect dozens of different weapons in Dark Souls II: swords, daggers, hammers, axes, polearms, bows, catalysts, and other, more exotic implements. Each has its own movements, speed, rhythm, and requirements.

Some weapons are versatile, and usable in a broad range of conditions. Others are best used in particular situations. A spear might be effective in a narrow passage where enemies are unlikely to surround you. In a wide open space, however, you might prefer a two-handed sword you can swing in a wide arc.

Remember the wisdom of Sun Tzu, who wrote in The Art of War...

It is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; if you do not know your enemies but do know yourself, you will win one and lose one; if you do not know your enemies nor yourself, you will be imperiled in every single battle.

Dodge. Don't block.

Maybe your kids have never been in a fight. Maybe they've never been bullied. If so, good for them. But if they do find themselves in a violent situation, you want them to know how to handle themselves.

While imitating the action in Dark Souls is a bad idea, you can still apply some broad principles. The most important of which is that you should never let the enemy make contact.

Blocking a blow still hurts, and can still damage you. It's better, therefore, to avoid your enemy's attentions altogether. Why block an attack you can dodge?

Face one enemy at a time.

This really should be self-explanatory. You can't ever count on having allies beside you in a fight. When shit gets real, you're likely to stand alone. You're more likely to survive a one-on-one duel than you are a battle against multiple adversaries -- especially if they've got solid teamwork and a grasp of small-unit tactics.

Fight dirty.

I know you want your children to learn to be honest and to play fair. They aren't going to be knights of Arthurian romance facing chivalrous adversaries who salute before attacking, and never kick a downed enemy.

The enemies you will face will use every nasty trick available to get the better of you. They'll gang up on you. They'll sneak up on you. They'll play dead and strike from behind.

They'll do anything to avoid a fair fight, and you should emulate their example. If you're in anything resembling a fair fight, rather than a fight where the odds are outrageously in your favor, then you fucked up.

Avoid expectations.

Here is a principle that applies mainly to fights against other players. Others will invade your game unless you burn a Human Effigy at a bonfire or play offline.

None of these invaders will fight the same way. They may not fight as you expect them to fight based on their armament. They may fight honorably, greeting you with a bow that you might prepare for a duel, or they may strike from ambush.

Appearances deceive. Actions can also deceive. Always be on your guard.

Don't be a one-trick pony.

It is easy and therefore tempting, to become attached to a favorite weapon and thus a preferred style of gameplay. I am guilty of this myself, especially when playing against others. I tend to favor one-handed slashing weapons, and I like to remain in constant motion.

According to Japan's sword saint, Miyamoto Musashi, this is a mistake.

You should not have any special fondness for a particular weapon, or anything else, for that matter. Too much is the same as not enough. Without imitating anyone else, you should have as much weaponry as suits you.

Don't depend on a single weapon, or a single spell, or a single tactic. To do so is to lose flexibility and leave you unable to adapt to changing circumstances.

Victory isn't the end.

When you finally win through to the end, you won't find an ending. You won't find closure. You won't even find an opportunity to begin your journey anew -- at least not until you hit the bonfire at Majula.

But when you do finally start your journey anew, you'll find that it's the same journey, only harder. Life is also like that. It isn't enough to succeed once. Success' reward is the need to redouble one's efforts and succeed again, and again.

That Isn't So Bad, Is It?

You might think that Dark Souls II is just a gory, violent action game. You might think it's inappropriate for children. You might be right, but to deny your children the experience is to deny them an opportunity to learn lessons that will serve them well in school, and in adult life.

Silent Clarion: Chapter Three

The third chapter of Silent Clarion, my new Before Starbreaker serial from Curiosity Quills Press, is now available. Naomi Bradleigh gets to indulge in a bit of girl talk over dinner with her friend and fellow Adversary, Jacqueline.

Chapter Three

We had no trouble getting seats on the Tube when we finished at MEPOL, which is always a pleasant surprise. It meant Jacqueline and I could sit and relax without worrying about our swords poking or tripping somebody. The train thrummed beneath my feet as it accelerated, and I let my eyes slip shut for a quick nap.

Jacqueline had other ideas. "Don’t fall asleep on me, Nims."

"Why not?" I really didn’t want to open my eyes. Though today’s mission wasn’t even close to being my toughest, I was worn out. "We’re the only people in this car."

"I wanted to talk with you." She actually looked concerned, which made me nervous. "You looked ready to feed those cops their own bollocks back there. What’s up?"

I shook my head. "Don’t wanna talk about it."

This is a complex story, definitely not a casual read, blending science fiction and high fantasy. It has been roughly 50 years since an event called Nationfall, and a shadowy organization called the Phoenix Society both funds individual city governments and protects individual rights. It has been roughly 50 years since an event called Nationfall, and a shadowy organization called the Phoenix Society both funds individual city governments and protects individual rights. Their enforcers, the Adversaries, can be thought of as judge, jury and (often enough) executioner.

Working in the background are alien beings called devas, ensof, or flowseekers (who was what seemed a little muddled at first, but one of the sequels will resolve it all when it’s time). The devas have god-like powers, although they’re clearly from another world and Clarke’s Law applies. If gods they are, then they’re gods in the Greek fashion—they lust, love, and fight amongst themselves to further their own agendas.

Morgan Stormrider, the main character, is one of a group of “asura emulators”—a sort of superhuman created by one of the ensof for the purpose of wielding the Starbreaker, the only weapon that can destroy an ensof. Although his identification is tattooed on the back of his neck, he seems to be the only asura ignorant of what he truly is. Stormrider is both an Adversary, semi-retired, and a musician in Crowley’s Thoth. The three members of the band are involved in a love triangle, and the story opens with one of the members being murdered in an attempt to frame the other two. As the murder takes place in London, Boston experiences a coup d’etat and Stormrider is assigned to take down the usurper—without bloodshed. Ironically, the other surviving member of Crowley’s Thoth (and Morgan’s love interest), Naomi Bradleigh, is also a retired Adversary and a strong and worthy character in her own right. The story twists and turns, with Stormrider and other Adversaries joining forces to put down the Boston coup, while the devas both help and interfere behind the scenes.

As I said, this story is complex, with a world that hangs together pretty well. I did wonder how technology would continue to develop through a disruption like Nationfall, but breakthroughs happen. People have implanted smartphones, AIs that act as major domos, and gigantic genemod house cats (and there are a few LOLcat references for the cat lovers). I thought the writing could have been tightened up overall, and that kept me from getting immersed in the book, but that’s the publisher’s responsibility. For me, books live and die by their characters, and these were people I got to care about.

The important thing is, I’ll get the next book when it comes out. If you’re a student of rock, like women who are ready to rumble, and want great characters, you’ll like this.___

I can come up with a shorter flowchart than +Daniel Swensen's:

Did I request your opinion? No? Then STFU.

It's my funeral, and I'll die if I want to.

PSA: I Don't Eat This Way to Annoy You
My choice to be on the GAPS diet right now has nothing to do with you. My decision to purchase products with clear gluten-free labeling for my son really shouldn't annoy you either. Unless I'm coming to your house for a meal, and I decline your perfect pie, I see no reason for people to be offended by my choices.

I don't have to tell you if my son or I have an underlying medical condition -- that's between me and my doctor. I don't have to describe what happens to me. I don't have to tell you what books I've read or how much university education I've received on microflora or nutrition or physiology or gastroenterology. I know you're curious. I know you want to know if my experience is "valid" or not. Too bad.

This is the body I live in. I'm going to have to live in it until it stops working. So I'm going to take care of it the best I know how. And when bad stuff happens to me because of things I do, I'm going to stop doing those things. I'm going to look into other options.

And look, if my choice to eat kimchi annoys you, and it's not because you can smell it and that bothers you, maybe you're the elitist jerk, not me. Stop shaming people for their food choices. It's none of your business.

Reality Is Not Relatable

So, Ira Glass of This American Life made a bit of a flap with some recent tweets.

Same thing with the great Mark Rylance shows this yr: fantastic acting, surprisingly funny, but Shakespeare is not relatable, unemotional.
— Ira Glass (@iraglass) July 28, 2014

Glass and others argue Shakespeare isn’t relatable. I think reality isn’t relatable, and neither is most realistic literary fiction.

I read an even-handed Washington Post(1) op-ed by Alyssa Rosenberg about this, but that’s just an op-ed piece. I wouldn’t have bothered hitting “New Post” for that.

I don’t think anybody actually cares that I don’t think much of most of Shakespeare’s plays. I hated reading them in high school. I didn’t need the teacher to belabor the point that Romeo and Juliet were idiots for making such a production abouttheir romance instead... more »

I didn’t need the teacher to belabor the point that Romeo and Juliet were idiots for making such a production about their romance instead of just marrying the partners chosen for them while enjoying an affair on the down low.

However, I enjoyed seeing some of them performed live. Hell, a good film production also works. I don’t need Patrick Stewart to be “relatable” in that Scottish play(2).

Nor do I need Helen Mirren to be “relatable” as Prospera(3).

My requirements for enjoying a story are twofold. I need time enough to throw aside the shackles of reality, flex the demonic sinews of my imagination, and hoist skyward my disbelief long enough to enjoy the story. I also need a reasonable expectation that my effort at getting into the story will pay off.

I avoid realistic literary fiction, such as the works of Jonathan Franzen and Jennifer Weiner, because I don’t can’t bring that expectation to such fiction. I’m not interesting in reading about real life. It’s bad enough I have to live it.

According to a recent Pacific Standard(4) article, some studies support my attitude. I’ll just quote the salient point below:

“Although forecasters predicted less intense emotional reactions when reading about a distant (fictional) event than when reading about a proximal (real) event, experiencers actually reported equally intense emotional reactions when they believed the story was fictional as when they believed it was real.”

If you aren’t sure what this means for you as a writer, I’ll break it down for you. Realism and verisimilitude are overrated. Tell an interesting story, avoid boring your reader, and everything else will fall into place.

It also features the awesome +Loki in New Orleans and +Eloy Lasanta. It's fun stuff, fantasy, badassery. Check it, yo.

SATURDAY SCENES: OUTTAKE FROM THE BLACKENED PHOENIX

This past week has been a tough one for me, writing-wise. Between being a bit low from my efforts at a fairly successful book signing at the Barnes & Noble in Altoona, PA and difficulties at my day job, it was hard to get back into writing.

It didn't help that I skipped last week's Saturday Scenes because of the aforementioned signing.

#saturdayscenes #starbreakerscenes #outtakes

With the discovery of newly-manufactured Gauss rifles and evidence of rampant worker exploitation, and Morgan's success in breaking Murdoch's electronic security from within, all that remained was to arrest the executives. Though this was familiar work, Naomi dreaded it for a reason that descended to meet her and Morgan.

She stared into Murdoch's only working elevator as its tarnished maw ground open to admit her and Morgan. The mirrors lining its interior were milky with age and neglect. She set a foot inside, and her bootheel adhered to the floor with a faint squelch. Worst of all was the Muzak emanating from a tinny old speaker within. The Crowley's Thoth anthem sanitized for a corporate setting was an insult.

Naomi withdrew, and glanced at Morgan. "You can ride that death trap alone if you like. I'll take the stairs."

Morgan shook his head. "We'll be safer if we take the stairs together."

They found the stairwell, and recoiled at the stench as they opened the door. A cloud of fruit flies rushed toward them, eager to escape, and Morgan slammed the door shut to contain them. Naomi suppressed her nausea with an effort. "They must have been dumping their garbage in there for weeks. It's a fire hazard and a biohazard combined."

"I don't like this at all." Morgan punched the elevator's call button. "If we possessed evidence tying Imaginos to Murdoch Defense Industries, I'd say he instructed Murdoch to make working conditions as egregious as possible to keep us busy."

She recalled the information Sid passed up from the factory floor as they boarded the elevator. Despite the reluctance to blame everything on Imaginos she shared with Morgan, she could imagine only one other explanation. "Maybe sanitation and humane treatment of workers just isn't profitable enough?"

"You're right. This isn't the first sweatshop we've had to shut down." Morgan pressed the button for the top floor, and the elevator lurched upward.

She clung to Morgan for support, glad that he drew her closer instead of questioning her. The elevator protested throughout its creaking, jerking progress up to the fifth floor, until it finally stopped with a barely audible chime that seemed to say, "No more, please. Have I not suffered enough?"

The doors shuddered open, revealing a top floor as shabbily decorated as the rest of the headquarters. The furniture predated Nationfall, and many of desks bore scars that suggested they had been salvaged from a landfill, cleaned, and disinfected before installation. The cubicle partitions' cloth linings were faded and threadbare. Naomi scarcely recognized the workers ensconced within them as human; their silent, plodding movements as they carried out their duties made them closer kin to poorly made animatronic puppets.

Naomi's head began throbbing in time with the flickering of the overhead florescent lights as a squad of sword-bearing security guards blocked their path through the cubicle farm to the executive suite. "Stand aside, gentlemen. We brought a warrant, and have found sufficient evidence of malfeasance to arrest Victoria Murdoch."

One of the guards made to draw his sword. His hand stopped, and hung suspended in midair as his sword appeared in Morgan's hand. "How the --"

"Magic." Morgan smiled as he withdrew the warrant from his pocket and displayed it for the guards' benefit. "Trust me when I say Murdoch doesn't pay you and your friends enough to oppose us."

The guard lowered his hand. "You're just going to let us go?"

"Yes, we are." Naomi took the guard's sword from Morgan, and offered it to the guard hilt first. "You're not the focus of our mission."

The guard accepted his sword, and sheathed it. With a gesture, he led the others to the elevator, which opened to let Sid and Eddie out. The former glared at the guards for a moment, silently daring them to defy him. They parted, and let him and Eddie join Naomi and Morgan before filing into the elevator.

Sid stalked toward Naomi with his fists clenched at his sides. His glower was an expression she had never seen on his face before. Though they were all gathered in the office, Naomi used secure relay chat for privacy. [Sid, do you want to be the one who arrests Victoria Murdoch?]

Morgan glanced at Sid, and nodded. [That means Sid's the one Murdoch and her lawyers will face in court.]

A wide, sunny grin cut through the anger clouding Sid's face. [That suits me just fine, Morgan. I'll take this organization apart, and pass along any evidence I find that might implicate Imaginos.]

Eddie shook his head. [Let's not count our chickens just yet. We still have to bust the bitch.]

ABOUT THIS WEEK'S SCENE

I tried continuing with Chapter 1 of The Blackened Phoenix this week, but it took three days to write the scene below before I said "screw this" and decided to try writing a similar scene using a different viewpoint character. I had already established supporting character Sid Schneider (the gentle giant of Morgan Stormrider's [merry, motley crew](http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TrueCompanions?from=Main.Nakama)) as a man enraged by the working conditions he found inside Murdoch Defense Industries, so I decided to use him for a second scene in which he sees that the horrible working conditions extend beyond the factory floor.

He's already determined to be the one to bust owner Victoria Murdoch for corporate malfeasance. Such a charge carries the [corporate death penalty](http://www.corpwatch.org/article.php?id=1810), but requires that the Adversary filing the charge assist in the prosecution, which would distract Morgan and Naomi from their mission to nail Imaginos.

Giving Sid the job of proving that Murdoch Defense Industries should be dissolved gives him something important to do, while still allowing me to focus on other characters. There might even be a gaiden in it, like I'm doing with Naomi Bradleigh in [Silent Clarion](http://www.matthewgraybosch.com/2014/07/23/silent-clarion-chapter-one/).___

Lessons from My First Signing

Here's another lesson learned from my first signing: You never know who will be interested.

This is another no-brainer, but there's nothing like seeing a geeky-looking guy in a Mega Man t-shirt walk past your table without a second glance to drive the lesson home. People don't always wear their interests on their sleeve.

My first sale was to a young woman on a break from her job at Best Buy. My last was to an elderly gentleman who claimed to own business interests in Australia.

In between, I sold copies to a middle-aged lady and her male companion, and to another middle-aged lady named Ruth whose enthusiasm kept increasing as Catherine and I described the book. We even got a shy young girl clutching a Rick Riordan paperback, but I couldn't bring myself to sell to her without giving her parents fair... more »

You never know, so don't assume that somebody will or won't like your book. Let them decide that for themselves, unless your novel runs on sex, violence, and heavy metal and your prospective reader isn't even a teenager yet.___

Brands Not Welcome

I've noticed an upswing in brand/business pages circling me in the last couple of days. With the sole exception of +nemeseaofficial, I blocked all such pages on sight and reported them as spam.

Why? Because I damned well can. :)

If that's not reason enough, consider this. I circled +nemeseaofficial after they circled me because I like their music, and because I've engaged with their content in the past.

If I don't have that relationship with you, and haven't circled your business page, then don't use your business page to circle me. If you're not a rock musician or band, I will just treat your business page as spam, and block/report.

If I wanted to engage with brands, I'd spend more time on #Failbook .

Lessons from My First Book Signing

The first thing I learned from my first signing is something I already suspected: You'll want to take a day to rest afterward. Doing a signing is hard (but worthwhile) when you tend towards introversion and dislike driving.

First, there's the driving to consider. Altoona is about two and a half hours from Harrisburg if you don't stop.

Then there's actually doing the signing. Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed doing it. The staff at +Barnes & Noble in Altoona were friendly and helpful, especially event manager Eric Daum. I enjoyed having people come over and ask about the book. I enjoyed pitching the book to them and signing for them if they decided to buy.

However, being sociable with strangers doesn't energize me. It drains me (that whole introversion thing), and I spent all day yesterday... more »

However, being sociable with strangers doesn't energize me. It drains me (that whole introversion thing), and I spent all day yesterday hiding in my apartment and resting. My rest consisted mainly of reading Eric Van Lustbader's The Miko, farming the Giant Lord in Dark Souls 2, and ripping CDs.

Oh, and comforting my kitties because they really don't like thunderstorms. Fortunately, +Catherine Graybosch is very patient with me and didn't mind going out with her friends.

I'll eventually write a proper blog post, but eventually could mean "sometime next week". In the meantime, expect more mini posts.___

Some of us still trust science, mainly because the alternatives aren't supported by empirical evidence or peer-reviewed experiments.

Nation apparently believed in Science...at some point.

Getting ready to go to my first book signing in Altoona, PA. No doubt I'll frighten the children.

I don't get the animosity, either, but I'm a small press writer. Not sure where I fit, and don't really care.

I am so tired of the hate being swapped back and forth between traditionally published and self published authors.

Can't we agree on some things?

Here's my list:

1. Crappy books get published by either method.
2. Awesome books get published by either method.
3. Just because you have been rejected by agents/publishers doesn't mean you suck.
4. Just because you have an agent/publisher doesn't mean you're awesome.
5. Writing a decent book is hard work.
6. Rejection doesn't automatically ennoble your soul and make you some kind of writing martyr.
7. Some crappy books make a lot of money.
8. Some awesome books vanish into obscurity.
9. Publishing is a venture that makes little logical sense.
10. No one knows at the outset what will be successful and what will not. Not writers, not agents, not publishers.___I don't get the animosity, either, but I'm a small press writer. Not sure where I fit, and don't really care.
