Well, I'm still frustrated with the changes in how photos are uploaded and shared here on the new G+, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't have Wildlife Wednesday. Share your photos of the wild and free-roaming critters you've encountered with the theme by tagging #WildlifeWednesday in your posts. Tagging the curators (+Mike Spinak and myself) is optional, but it does help us pick up on your posts easily and it makes us smile.
I would have loved to share this in the album I've got set up already for all my birds-in-flight photos, but alas I cannot. I hope +Google+ Photos sorts out the photo-uploading fiasco soon.

Terribly sad news: Elephant Slaughter!
If you saw the footage of forest elephants congregating in the jungle clearing called Dzanga Bai in the recent series BBC: Africa then you will be shocked to hear that poachers have turned that elephant sanctuary into a slaughterhouse this week...

Finding Your Auto Awesome Photos
Auto Awesome is a new Google+ collection of five fun and creative ways to share your photos. To recap, they are:
MOTION -- short animations created from a sequence of photos
SMILE -- group photos where everyone looks their best
PANO -- panoramas created from a series of landscape photos
MIX -- photobooth-style pictures created from multiple portraits
HDR -- HDR photos created from a set of bracketed exposures
In order to attempt to have an Auto Awesome photo created, all you need to do is upload new images to Google+. From there, we will take a look at your new images for common traits and characteristics. If we find that there are matches, we will go ahead and create your new Auto Awesome photos.

Multi-Tier Display
I have problems getting my G+ feed to display the multi-column option. It did on Day 1 of the new rollout, but now it gives me the single feed column regardless of the option I choose in the "stream layout" menu...
How do I fix this, anyone???

I was playing around with my images from my recent safari to Mana Pools in Zimbabwe, and quite liked this one. (I can't seem to stay away from my photos from this place - will try to post more variety soon!)
Those Ana trees are massive...and this regal lion seemed almost insignificant in this forest as he strolled on through.

Ugh, frustration!!
I see the photo sharing bug hasn't been sorted out yet.
I don't want duplicated photos and I don't want my photos in the PHOTOS FROM POSTS folder. I also don't want to do a mile-long runaround uploading into Picasa etc. Until it's sorted, I will have to refrain from posting photos on my G+ profile. Currently, if you upload a photo to an existing album, you can only "share" the photo after finishing the upload process. This generates a COPY of the photo and no interaction/comments are stored on the original photo.
Sorry about this, folks! I do hope that Google sorts this out sooner rather than later...

Desert Dance.......
The magic is in the light. On my recent birthday getaway , I wanted to capture some unique Kalahari moments while enjoying the time with family and friends. The focus was on waiting and looking for any scene that could tell a story of light
With the exquisite light the the desert has to offer at sunrise and sunset , this is one of a series I have captured using exposure to enhance the dust and light of this Ostrich as it enjoyed a sand bath with a 3 others.
15 minutes of magic as the light changed to offer up some warmth and a unique perspective of desert life. The light is the moment.

Photo Posting - HELP G+!
I just noticed that uploading a photo into an album doens't automatically generate a new "post" that you can post to your stream/circles. This is a shlep since you now need to post a photo directly from your main feed and you can't move that photo to the album in which you originally wanted it to appear - you can only copy it there.
Anyone found a workaround for this yet? I prefer posting to a specific album and generating a post from the photo upload - is this something that's gone forever now in the new G+?
Advice perhaps - +Jay Patel, +Grobler du Preez, +Dick Whitlock, +Brian Rose, +Bryan Nelson, +Chris Chabot?

"Fading Memories"

If we don't act now, then that's all the elephant legacy will be - fading memories for those of us lucky to have laid eyes on wild elephants while they still walked the earth. Poaching is getting out of control, and with all the focus on rhinos people are not noticing that thousands of tons of ivory are taken to the East every year to be used in ornaments, while elephants pay with their lives for these luxury items.

An estimated 32,000 elephants have been poached for their ivory since January 2012 all over Africa.

Apologies to those of you that may have seen this from my previous blog link but I'm all 'a bit smiley' over this image taken just after dawn yesterday and so am sharing it for #wildlifewednesday
I also have to tip my hat to +Ben Canales for this shot. Ben's an amazing astrophotographer and I read his post a day before this was taken to say how sometimes he struggled to get out of bed in the middle of the night to get images but was always glad he did once out. That was also true of me when my alarm went off at 4:30am knowing that I had to start work for 8am and do a 10 hour day in the office and I thought of Ben's comments then. I wrestled with whether it was worth getting up so early given that I would only have a couple of hours in the woods but went anyway-my mantra at such times being "if you don't go, you'll never know".

This was my first proper sighting and shot of this elusive nocturnal species at a local hide recently. He landed VERY close so this is a frame-filling 36 megapixel image showing great feather detail.

"Grey Ghost"
Taken in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming in February and converted to Black and White last night.
Once there was word of the Canyon pack in the area, I found an area off of the road to hike up to a small hill with the big lens and try and scope out the two wolves that had recently been spotted. Found this guy who shortly thereafter headed toward the Blacktail area.

This guy came out of nowhere at the last light of day at the Kij Kij waterhole in the Kalahari. We had to leave to make the gate closing time at camp, but I snapped a few important frames as he came to drink some water. The brown hyena is normally nocturnal and very shy of humans. This scorpion dug up the beetle from a hole in the ground and stung it repeatedly before moving off with his kill. I photographed this on my belly with a 20kg hiking backpack strapped to my back - we were hiking through the Fish River Canyon in Namibia.

Here's another iceberg shot from Antarctica last year. The right side of the berg looks like a Roman Centurion to me. Do you see it? This was printed and used by OFFSET (www.offset.com) at their launch event. OFFSET is a new stock agency created by Shutterstock. I've entrusted my image library with them, so I was proud to have one of my images included in their launch material.

"Two Species in Peril" - THREATENED THURSDAY

Looking at this scene you would almost think that rhinos have now even asked the lions to be their bodyguards...what actually happened was that the rhinos chased the lions off - a stunning moment of interaction between two of Africa's great iconic mammals. Sadly, both of their species are in extreme danger from the greed and influence of man.
To date, more than 2.2 rhinos have been poached in South Africa per day for 2013 alone (following on the same trends for the past 3 years). All this for their horn which is believed to be of medicinal value.
