Peter G McDermott499,607This year’s theme pays tribute to all of the people who serve their friends and neighbors for the greater good. This type of salute is normally directed at our nation’s soldiers fighting for freedom across the globe and defending us here at home. And while we want to express gratitude to those brave men and women, our salute goes even further.  We salute our soldiers, our police officers, firefighters, public servants and everyone else who sacrifices their time or resources to make our community a great place to live. Whoa, whoa whoa...wait a minute here...

I just read this "article" (if you can call it that) by +Davey Alba over at +WIRED. And I have quite a few problems with it.

1) I use a PC for at least 10 hours 5 days a week. I use a personal computer at work to manage information within several very complicated databases. I never see myself able to do this with a smartphone or tablet device because of the level of complexity involved in my work.

2) We need PCs to support our economy. The United States is a post-industrial economy and most of our revenue is now coming from services and not products. Many of those services require lots of people doing lots of work with computers. It would be impractical for a middle manager to sit in a cube all day and conduct his business on a 5.5" smartphone when he can use a full size keyboard and 3 20"... more »

Here's a great way to keep your spices and herbs ready when you need them!

and on the matter of ticking things off the "to-do" list ... I tidied up my spice jars - I like to use these 500 ml mason jars since they are 1) cheap 2)easy to sterilize in the dishwasher and 3) wide enough to fit a measuring spoon

Veggie Omelette with Turkey Bacon

Super simple to make and extremely delicious. Dice a quarter of a red bell pepper, slice 5 or 6 baby bella mushrooms and get a cup of washed spinach leaves. Sautee the mushrooms to allow some of the moisture to cook out, then add the spinach and peppers. Cook down until the spinach is all wilted. Then add three eggs, very lightly beaten with just kosher salt and a bit of black pepper. As the egg mixture sets, lift the sides to allow the uncooked egg to roll underneath. Cover to allow the top to cook evenly. Fold and serve with two slices of your favorite turkey bacon! (I get mine from Trader Joe's and like to bake it at 400 for 15 minutes.)

Importing Photos: What do you use?

Every time that I plug a device into my computer that contains digital photographs, Windows asks me what default application I would like to use to import the photos. I've tried using Picasa, the default Windows 8 importer and even the factory-supplied software for various devices, but it all seems to handle the process quite differently.

What have you found to be the most efficient way to import photos and videos from a number of various devices to free up space on those devices and keep things organized on your computer?

Devices I commonly download from: Nikon D5300, Samsung NX1000, Samsung Galaxy S5, Flipcam HD and GoPro Hero.

Because science.

Thanks to your generosity, we’ve surpassed our original ‪#‎RebootTheSuit‬ goal to bring back Neil Armstrong’s spacesuit. What will we do with the additional funds raised? Up to $200,000 will go toward conserving, digitizing and displaying Alan Shepard’s Mercury spacesuit, which will also be part of our upcoming Destination Moon exhibition. If you haven’t backed the campaign, there’s still time to pledge and gain unprecedented access to our work on these two historic spacesuits: http://bit.ly/RebootTheSuit

So this is happening...

Everything in its right place
When we launched Google+, we set out to help people discover, share and connect across Google like they do in real life. While we got certain things right, we made a few choices that, in hindsight, we’ve needed to rethink. So over the next few months, we’re going to be making some important changes. Here’s more about what you can expect:

Cheap & Healthy Ceviche

You might notice that a lot of my cooking comes from throwing together whatever I have in the fridge and pantry. Today it was a can of tuna, bell pepper, cucumber and a lemon. Tossed with olive oil, salt, pepper and a sprinkle of sesame seeds, you have yourself a very thrifty, healthy and delicious civiche.

Google Needs To Fix Some Stuff

That's probably the most understated title I could think of for this post. If you're an +Android fanatic, you probably think this guy is off his rocker. Google Needs To Fix Some Stuff

That's probably the most understated title I could think of for this post. If you're an +Android fanatic, you probably think this guy is off his rocker. Basically, a writer for +The Business Journals tried out +Google Photos on his Android phone, enabled Auto Backup and then uninstalled the app. He was horrified when he found that after he uninstalled the app that all of the photos he had taken since uninstalling it had been backed up to Google's cloud.

So, a few things at play here. First of all, where is the actual setting that determines whether or not photos get backed up? Is it in your Google account settings, Google+ or Google Photos? Did the writer also have Google+ installed and Google+ Photos enabled? Did the writer disable backup before uninstalling?

Either way, whether he's right or wrong, Google needs to fix the way that it explains permissions to users. In a post-Snowden world where people are much more cautious of what information they store on the cloud, companies like Google, Apple and Microsoft that have developed ecosystems for our information, need to be crystal clear about what and how information will be stored and shared.

Most of you reading this are most likely familiar with Google Photos, Google Plus and Android, so before you start spewing your hatorade in the comments, think about your mom, your boss, the co-worker that can't rectify the paper jam in the copy machine, and then ask yourself if they would be able to figure out the seemingly principals of Google Photos' Auto backup?

It would be impractical for a middle manager to sit in a cube all day and conduct his business on a 5.5" smartphone when he can use a full size keyboard and 3 20"... more »

2) We need PCs to support our economy. The United States is a post-industrial economy and most of our revenue is now coming from services and not products. Many of those services require lots of people doing lots of work with computers. It would be impractical for a middle manager to sit in a cube all day and conduct his business on a 5.5" smartphone when he can use a full size keyboard and 3 20" monitors to manage more information more efficiently. Programming on an iPad mini? Give me a break.

3) Correlation does not prove causation. Because Apple is selling more iPhones than MacBooks doesn't mean that people are abandoning computers in favor of smartphones and tablets.

4) Technology is incredible. Moore's Law is so awesome that our everyday software hasn't even caught up to the potential of current personal computers. Because storage, processing speed and RAM have increased exponentially, a computer purchased 5 years ago might still be great for light browsing, e-mail and watching YouTube (which is what I imagine what most home PC users do on their machines). Because products that we purchased 5 years ago can still accomplish the tasks we use them for, there is no incentive to re-invest or upgrade until they can no longer perform the task we want them to. Squeezing all of that processing power, memory and storage into a device the size of a pack of baseball cards has taken a couple of decades. Battery technology alone can't keep up with our demand shrink things smaller and smaller. What we're able to do in a laptop or desktop that hasn't changed size in 20 years is almost limitless compared to what we are trying to do on these pocket-sized modern marvels.

5) Phones break and people lose them. People buy new phones because they break and they lose them, not just because they want the shiny new one. I can't remember the last time I cracked my laptop's screen on the sidewalk or left my notebook computer in the back of an Uber.

6) Some contracts still subsidize phone cost every 2 years. If you're on a big carrier, there might be an incentive to get a new phone every two years if the carrier is willing to eat a large portion of the cost.

7) People need an incentive to buy a new computer. Marketing for computers sucks. Why would I buy a new laptop when my $1,000 machine that I bought in 2012 is doing perfectly fine? It came with Windows 8, Microsoft is about to give me Windows 10 for free, it still works with all of my devices and since I store so much of my information on the cloud, the limitations of the hard drive aren't a concern for me.

8) The article's title could have been more appropriately chosen. "Compared to Smartphones, PC Growth is Slow" would have been much more fitting.

Anyway, that's just a few ideas that bugged me about this. I find it silly to see such sensationalist headlines that don't carry any weight. If the PC is really doomed, why am I writing this on my 3 year old 15" ultrabook instead of my 3 year old iPad?</rant>

Happy Birthday, Dad!

Throughout our lives, you've always been at the helm, (whether it was your ship or not!) but we all know it was always mom steering. Your sense of humor, patience and adaptability taught us how to make lemonade out of any situation we were thrown into. You have four of the most difficult children you could have asked for and we are so glad to have someone so patient and kind to always be there for us. Thanks for giving us so many unique and memorable experiences and always taking us along for the journey.

Always remember, "God is good, but never dance in a small boat."

Dear +Google+,

I'm at my parents' house. My wife and I flew over 1,000 miles to get here and spent close to $1,000 to get here. We're all sitting here on the couch and as I tried to share some photos to the Chromecast which I demanded my father have for his TV, I realized that the +Google Photos app does not support Chromecast.

Whoever forgot this feature needs to be fired.

Here I am, trying to share photos from our travels and am instead trying to explain to my father why Android is superior to Apple. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it's time to get an iPhone and Apple TV so I don't embarrass myself that next time I go to share these precious moments.
