What I learned using only Google products.
As a former Windows and current Apple user, I wanted to understand the full Google platform experience firsthand. So I went all-in.
Sure, I've used Android devices and even a Chromebook casually before. But I never tried to rely on them full time.
Boy, did I learn a lot about Google (and Apple). And my opinions on many things have changed. I'm going to tell you the 10 shocking things I learned and how my mobile computing buying and usage have been transformed.

Resistance to change
In my view the biggest challenge in turning a business into a #socialbusiness is resistance to change.
Take nothing for granted when implementing change! In my experience a major cause of resistance to change is when the process excludes relevant stakeholders - and you need to think carefully who these are. It is essential to pay careful attention to the management of a change process and to make sure you include all the people that will be confronted with the consequences of the changes.
Without paying attention to this "small" detail you may find yourself stepping into a minefield :)

Read this!
Every single entrepreneur in the world, or anyone who is building anything, needs to read this. Now.
My takeaway from the Yahoo Tumblr acquisition is the same lesson I learn from every big success I research in the tech space. "If you build it (a fantastic product, not a business model and not a monetization strategy), they (the dollars, a lot of them), will come.
Love. This. Post.

Path Intelligence
The data these folks are collecting really is interesting and useful, albeit does get a bit creepy. But watching this I thought about how it might give rise to shielding or jamming devices which thwarted these types of collection efforts.
As this type of tracking and data gathering becomes more pervasive might there be a business opportunity to defeat it or perhaps a type of do not call list variant that would opt-out certain cell phones.
It's interesting to think about how this will all evolve and play out.

I’m very proud today to announce that the design team from 17 Feet is joining Google!
More and more people lately have been taking note that we’re really serious about design at Google. Our approach is reflected in new designs for the Stream and Google+ Hangouts, and it means being just as serious about bringing in talented designers.
17 Feet has been doing wonderful work for Google+ for a while now, on everything from the Stream to Photos to our mobile apps. We appreciate their design sensibilities and culture and see this as the continuation of a great relationship.
This transaction builds on last year’s successful onboarding of the design firm Cuban Council, which, since joining, has been a fantastic partner in helping us build the future of Google+.
Please join me in welcoming our newest fellow Googlers - and expect great things!

Hangouts, phone calls and Google Voice
Thanks for all of your feedback on last week's Hangouts launch. I wanted to quickly talk about 1) making/receiving phone calls in Gmail, and 2) Google Voice support more generally.
1) Today's version of Hangouts doesn't yet support outbound calls on the web and in the Chrome extension, but we do support inbound calls to your Google Voice number. We're working hard on supporting both, and outbound/inbound calls will soon be available. In the meantime, you can continue using Google Talk in Gmail.
2) Hangouts is designed to be the future of Google Voice, and making/receiving phone calls is just the beginning. Future versions of Hangouts will integrate Google Voice more seamlessly.

One thing is for sure, turning into a #socialbusiness doesn't just happen. You simply have to approach this with a clear strategy.

So I am experimenting with Saga (http://www.getsaga.com/) and enabling auto location sharing in Google Latitude so that my location can reflect on my Google+ profile to my family circle.
Wonder if this is going to destroy my battery? :)

Does anyone else agree that it would be awesome if native Google+ post links were available on the mobile app?
Sometimes I want to share a post from the app to say Twitter or LinkedIn but can't because there is no way to grab the link?

Totally agree with this comment by +Brian Solis
"A recent Altimeter Group study published by Charlene Li found that businesses that employ enterprise social networks without a true vision for collaboration or how to improve relationships often fail to meet expectations. Also, without leadership adoption, it’s impossible to lead by example."

Why the new Google+ rocks for writers.
Some writers are less than gruntled about Google+'s new design. Here's why they should love it.
The complaint goes like this: The new Google+ emphasizes pictures and de-emphasizes words, which is a Pinterest-like move that panders to non-readers and disadvantages the word people.
This whole argument is false, and here's why:
Falsehood #1: You need a lot of words, not a picture, to promote writing.
It's false because that's how the most successful books are promoted: with pictures, not a wall of words. Ask any book jacket designer.
Falsehood #2: A "card" doesn't have enough information to convey what's in a written work.
In fact, that's how libraries were organized for centuries -- with a catalog of cards.
