Stephan Spelde8,664My Inspirational CircleEver since I joined Google plus in the end of the year 2011 I have been looking for those special ones. Those people that inspired me...touched my soul with their work or made me laugh my pants off.It took me over 2 years to fill this circle up to 500 inspirators, but today... I finally added my last person. :)I will seek more of these in the future, don't worry, and this means I will have to share multiple circles from now on, but for now...these are the 500 most inspirational people on Google Plus for me.A great big Thank You to everybody in this circle for enriching my Google Plus experience and inspire and motivate me in becoming a better photographer.artist. #circleshare   #circlesharing   #circles  2014-01-09 22:05:0550031930CC G+
Justin Hill22,577338 Photographers :- Due to a post I saw float past in my stream today I am suddenly aware of the fact that I have not shared any of my circles for a very long time. So to rectify that here's my circle of photographers. If you are missing from this circle you are most probably in my other photography circle that is HDR based...if you are also missing from that one then I am sorry as I simply cannot add everyone that crosses my path or stream. Enjoy...2013-10-11 14:09:1333813411CC G+
Thomas Hawk6,146,1772500 Kick Ass Google+ Photographers (part 3 of 5)This is the fifth time I've shared my photographer's circle on Google+.  I'm going to share it in 5 posts.  Last week I shared last name A-Da, and Da-Ho.  Today's , part 3 of 5, today, represents Ho-Mi.  I'll share the remaining two tomorrow and Thursday.  I originally shared my photographers circle at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 photographers.  I'll probably share it again eventually when it gets to 3,000.A few notes about this circle. The criteria that I look for (and don't always get right) in this circle is that the photographer produce interesting and engaging photography.  I also look for people who are active in the community, post mostly their own work, and post regularly.  I'm looking more for people who post their own work and less of the noise stuff (gifs, links, non-photography, promotions, etc.).  I also like people who are positive, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. and dislike people who are mean, snarky, jerks, disrespectful, etc.I have a pretty well known bias against signatures and watermarks.  You will see very few photographers in my circles who use them.  I really hate the watermark debate and would rather not have it with folks.  I just don't like them -- it's my circle that I have to look at.  There are likely a few folks in here who use them who are friends of mine, but for the most part, this is a pretty watermark free circle.  It's totally cool if you love your watermark, it's just not something I really want to look at.  Please don't hate me for my aesthetic preference.  Finally, the photography community on Google+ is probably the best one on the internet today.  There is no way that I can possibly include all of the fine photographers worth following on G+.  There are wayyyyy too many.  These are just 2,500 that I personally have noticed.  I'm sure I left out some really amazing ones -- like you if you are not in this circle :)  I'll probably also totally kick myself when I realize that I accidentally left out a really obvious good one who may even be a friend of mine -- again, maybe even like you.  :)Stay tuned for parts 4 and 5 and thanks again to all of the great photographers on G+ who make this place such a delight to hang out.Part 1-5:  http://goo.gl/17ujpnPart 2-5:  http://goo.gl/3vn0OC*Note, Google Circles are terribly wonky.  It wouldn't let me add some photographers in my circle into these circles because of "domain errors."  If this affected you, sorry about that.2013-09-03 18:49:364857231117CC G+

David Marx4,263Shared Circle:  The Photographers Whose Posts Consistently Inspire Me Here On Google+I am writing an article tonight on how to find the right connections for photographers new to the Google+ platform.  My article is geared towards those just starting out here.  One of the things that I suggest in the article is that you start out your Google+ experience by immediately killing off the silly "what's hot and recommended" feed.  In place of that nonsense, I recommend that photographer's new to this platform start out their experience here by subscribing to this circle. This circle is a completely biased list.  This is my own personal list of photographers whose style, and whose words, resonate with my tastes everyday.  These is just a small sampling of the Google+ photographers whose posts I religiously follow and whose art, insight, and consistency inspire me.  This is a small sampling of the artists that I see sharing great art here and individuals who I believe exemplify good Google+ etiquette.   Again, this is by no means a definitive list of all the talented artists currently sharing their work on this platform.  This is not meant to be a list of the artists who have the most Google+ followers nor those who have the most industry influence.2013-04-11 05:20:1342116CC G+

Charles Lupica60,136►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄         Top 500 most followed photographers          ►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄Once again it's time to share my circle of the top 500 most followed photographers.  I'm sharing the circle here but I posted the the full list as a series of posts on +Most Followed Photographers on G+. Photographers with an " * " in front of their name are not included in the numbered count because they only share outside content,  their content is content suitable to a blog and usually has no images associated with it, or they have become mostly or completely inactive on G+.This list was complied from two previous lists and a line-by-line search of CircleCount.  If you know of someone that should have been on the list and isn't, the most likely cause is that their +CircleCount profile doesn't include the word photographer, or camera, photo, or foto. Or, I had a senior moment and missed them.  I thought I had avoided that this time but I still managed to miss +Magnus Ericson should should be around 454. I noticed some interesting things when compiling this circle.  There are a lot of people that moved into the top 500 that abandoned G+ for some reason or their interaction has become one post a month.  I have also noticed that many of the photographers in this group have a lower follower count than they had 6 weeks to 8 weeks ago.  I'm not sure what conclusion can be drawn from this but I find it very curious. To view the lists please see the following links.001 to 080: http://goo.gl/mmr7w  4'431'409 - 55771081 to 160: http://goo.gl/mXuup  55368 - 37454161 to 240: http://goo.gl/rLmy1  37343 - 30457241 to 320: http://goo.gl/o06Hy  30131 -25785321 to 390: http://goo.gl/747Lf  25760 -23013390 to 450: http://goo.gl/xDc2D  23006 - 21347450 to 510: http://goo.gl/sEnac  21321 - 194402013-02-23 23:33:1450013641100CC G+

Jeff Sullivan1,152,722Most-Followed 500 Photographers CircleWhile a circle like this has the obvious drawback of missing some excellent photographers newer to the site, Charles often follows up his Top 500 Most Followed Photographer circle with circles going all the way down to photographers with less than 5000 contacts.  Here are four circles Charles has created to help us discover and recognize photographers at all levels within the G+ community:Under 5000 -    Under 7500 -    Under 15,000 - 500 Most Followed Photographers - (here)I like to interact with people who are active in photography... share at least a photo or two of their own original work per week, so I'll slowly whittle the circle down to a stream of excellent photography (I've started, but may not finish for a few weeks).---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+Charles Lupica  Charles Lupica Dec 25, 2012 (edited)  -  Public►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄         Top 500 most followed photographers list                   circle of 500             and Group 6: 421 to 500►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄If you're not in this circle and you think you should be, I'm sorry.  I have missed a few people by pure accident.  My methods are entirely manual and I do miss people.  I have checked every profile and I have included only those people that share their own work, and share it on G+. Bloggers and people doing mostly reshares weren't included. Some big name photographers that don't share a lot of their own work were included - sorry for the double standard. Here is the 6th and last part  of my list of the top 500 most followed photographers - Here are links to the previous parts of the list.Group 1: http://tinyurl.com/cf58vws - 1 to 100Group 2: http://tinyurl.com/bodaspk - 101 to 193Group 3: http://tinyurl.com/bsb87u4 - 194 to 250 and circleGroup 4: http://tinyurl.com/d4ulv6q  - 250 to 340Group 5: http://tinyurl.com/cjpmgy4 - 341 to 420 Group 6: 421 to 500 and circle of 500 (this post)If you are on this list, I urge you to comment, plus and share the post. I have sifted through lots of pages and circles as well as http://circlecount.com/  to try to get an accurate list. If I'm missing anyone, please let me know.  I have specifically left off a few people who only share links to their content housed elsewhere,  people who share a lot of other people's work without sharing their own, or people that appear to be inactive. The rank numbers are off by 1 because I included the same person twice in an earlier list.#Top500CircleDec   #circleshare   #circlesharing   #sharedcircles   #sharedpubliccircles  420 +Jennifer Luzio 21797421 +Matt Suess 21794422 +2013-01-07 15:33:25500221451CC G+

Emmanuel Nataf2,642My very own selection of photographers – September 2012I am extremely selective on Google+ and here are the photographers who have impressed me the most in over a year. This is not about quantity but about quality. Most of them are street photographers but there are also a few specialists of landscapes, photo manipulation and nature. This circle should give you a lot of inspiration for your next photo shoots.I hope you'll enjoy it. If you do, don't hesitate to share it, some of them definitely deserve to be more famous!2012-09-09 08:53:46132004CC G+

Martin Bailey37,482It's been a while since I shared my Photography circle, so here goes. This circle is the result of a year on Google+ interacting with many, many amazing photographers. It isn't a comprehensive list of the best photogs on G+, and it doesn't contain everyone that I interact with or follow. I have a few other circles for people that share good info but don't interact, and I have some lists of friends that haven't taken the time to upload enough photos to make their profile look pretty. I'll shift them over when their profiles look good. Superficial? Yes, but I like things to look pretty. This isn't a list that I'll add people to on request. If our paths cross and you share good content, I'll add you in due course. If you think you should be in here but aren't, I'm sorry. Let's stay friends and you'll be in their someday if you continue to share original and interesting photography related information. There are also a number of people that write in Japanese in here. If you don't like posts in languages you don't understand, weed those plussers out later, but they are in the list primarily because they're great photographers, so hopefully you'll keep them circled.Enjoy...2012-07-18 12:47:18438501350CC G+
Jason Wells13,970Top 100 Unverified (v1)on the cuspI've always been a little intrigued by the concept of a "verified user." Ostensibly to ensure the true identity of the person behind a profile, it also serves as a validation of notability, social success or even celebrity. At this point in time, almost 6900 Google+ users have the checkmark. And while Google verifies users according to their own criteria, everyone above a certain number of followers is verified. As it happens, right now that certain number is about 588,000.This is I believe a unique list: the top 100 people, ranked by follower count, that are at or below that line. In other words, the people who are just about to get on Google's verification radar. So it ranges from +Maria Popova, with roughly 588k followers, to +Matt Steiner, with about 39k.It's an interesting group of people, predominantly photographers or other visual artists. Some of them are quite good. There's a broad swathe of nationalities represented. Interestingly, most of them are people I haven't seen on G+ before, although there are a few familiar faces. What unites them all is that they're all very close to earning their checkmarks. As they get verified, people will fall out of this circle, so I expect to change often. So I'll reshare this circle periodically with the refreshed top 100 unchecked folks. I encourage you to reshare it too.(Props to +Chris Macidis, my technical collaborator.)2012-07-16 14:58:18100515CC G+

I mean, you've seen circles for "Most interactive photographers", The Kick Ass Photographers", "The Inspirational Photographers", "The best Nature and Wildlife Photographers", and the list goes on.This post contains a list and a circle. The circle contains the 500 most followed photographers with less than 60'000 followers.  The list is a list of photographers that have more than 60'000 followers.  Most people on the list have over 1 million followers because they are on the G+ list of suggested users (commonly referred to as the SUL).  But who are the most followed ? Here is an updated version of a circle  I shared a few months back. I have tried to find all of the top photographers and add them to this circle. Obviously the last 50 places probably change daily so this is the list as I checked it before sharing. The number of followers needed to be on the list has changed a lot over the last 4 months.  Back in February you needed  13'117 followers, in mid-June that number is around 17'200. Why is this circle of interest ? Well, because it wasn't chosen by me or any other individual. It was chosen by the G+ community. Some of the people in the circle are great photographers, some are great at being interactive, some are just plain good at marketing themselves, and many have a combination of the above. But, in the end, the G+ community has chosen them as the top 550 photographers to follow.• Why is xxxx not on the list ?  Photographers that haven't been active on G+ for more than 6 weeks weren't included.  Several photographers that only post sporadically and generally less than one post a month aren't included• If you find someone on the list that you don't really think is a photographer, send me an email and / or a private post and I'll look into removing them or leave a comment below.• If you know of someone that I missed that has more than 17'200 followers, let me know and I'll add them to the list for next time.• You could call this the User's Choice Award circle because people on G+ have chosen to follow the people in this list and circle. Why share this circle ? Photographers were among the first people to embrace G+. Over the last few months I have seen photographers add significant numbers of followers and fall in over all standings. Wordy people and celebrities are overtaking photographers. +Trey Ratcliff +Thomas Hawk and +Lisa Bettany are the only photographer2012-06-14 13:42:29500244215241CC G+

Sunrise At Steptoe Butte

Just uploaded a new photo to +500px. This one was taken during sunrise at Steptoe Butte in the Palouse Region of Washington State. You're basically on top of a hill with a 360 degree view of the beautiful rolling fields all around you. The hardest part about being there is figuring out which photo you want to take. It's like being a kid in a candy store - every direction you look, the scenery is amazing.

As always, more over on my blog at www.mattk.com

I love this photo!

This came across my photo stream over on +500px! Love it! Not just because it’s freakin’ gorgeous (which it is), but because it shows that it’s more about where you put your camera, than using the most expensive gear out there. He used a Nikon D7000 for this, which is literally thousands of dollars less than the higher end DSLRs that are out there. I SOOO want to go here by the way :-)

Fall Photography At the Dallas Divide in Colorado

I posted a story and trip recap over on my blog today (www.mattk.com) about my trip to Ouray #Colorado to photograph the changing leaves and fall colors. What an amazing place! The leaves and colors were just about perfect and we even got a little snow.

The above photo is from a location called the Dallas Divide at sunrise. It's basically an overlook on the San Juan mountain range. The photo was shot with a Nikon D800, Tamron 24-70mm, and processed with +Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, and +onOne Software Perfect Effects.

More photos and stories to go along with them over on my blog: mattyk.me/GKNBuS

The Coolness of Written Notes

In this age of email, texts, and everything digital I've forgotten how cool it is to get a written note. Even though I know it takes time write an email, there's just something about a hand-written note that makes you feel that this person really took time/thought/energy to sit down and craft something - and then place it in the mail.
This is from a friend of mine +Levi Sim who I got to spend some time with at Photoshop World. Thanks Levi. You TOTALLY made my day! :-)

Sometimes Your Favorite Photos Happen When You're Not Expecting

I wrote a post on my blog (mattk.com) about my recent trip to Norway and one of my favorite shots. Basically, if the parking lot my car was in didn't close for the night (since I was up for sunrise), I'd have gotten in my car and never seen this place. Instead, since my car was locked in the lot, I set out and foot and came across one of my favorite areas from my Norway trip. Enjoy!

More photos/story over on my blog at www.mattk.com

Photo taken with Nikon D800, 70-200 lens, and processed with +Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and +onOne Software.

Today on the Grid: insights into Adobe's deal for photographers, AND it's our first ever "Portfolio Intervention" show

That's right -- we're going to visit photographer's submitted websites to let them know which single image in their portfolio just "has to go!" Send us a link to your or your friend's online portfolio, and we'll find that image that we all know doesn't belong in there, and we'll have an on-air 'portfolio intervention' to convince them to remove it. We're starting with Matt's and my own.

Leave us a link as a comment here, then we'll see you today at 4:00 pm ET today LIVE at this address: http://www.kelbytv.com/thegrid  -- See you then!

Website Portfolio Critiques Live On The Grid Today

We're changing it up a little today on our weekly live talk show, The Grid (live at 4pm ET at www.kelbytv.com/onair). This time we're gonna do website portfolio critiques. We'll take a look at everything from the overall first impact the site has, to the design, the layout, the photos, and the experience a viewer has when looking at the site.
In addition to +Scott Kelby and I, we're also really psyched to have an in-studio guest +Colby Brown. Colby has been on the show before and he's just got some incredible insights so we're really happy to have him here.

So here's the deal. It's pretty simple.
1) These aren't live blind photo critiques where we just look the photos. We'll be looking at your entire website which means you have to have a website portfolio.

I Admit It! I'm A Light Snob

There... I said it. I'm usually a total light snob and generally don't pull my camera out for landscape photos unless it's sunrise or sunset. But I couldn't resist on my recent drive through #Norway. I passed this scene (in mid-afternoon), looking down on it from an overpass. I immediately did a U-ey and went back.

I wrote a whole story about the trip with more photos on my blog: http://mattyk.me/12WhTSr

The Story Behind The Photo

Sometimes the story behind the photo is a simple one. I was looking through my photos from my trip to the California coast and Big Sur last December, and I came across a photo that I barely remember taking. I’m assuming I’m not the only one that goes through their photos (like I did after the trip) and heads straight to the photos that they know were some of their favorites just by looking at the thumbnails in a grid view. The problem with that is sometimes you miss photos that may be really good because they don’t immediately jump out at you as a small thumbnail. That’s exactly what happened here.

The Story
I woke up one morning to shoot sunrise along the Big Sur coastline. I was above the fog layer and wound up chasing photos for about 10 miles down the coast, stopping constantly to shoot different views. As the sun came up I wasdriving... more »

My favorite channel, now with light painting

From a recent solo night photography outing, which I spent shivering in the chill of the night air, doing light painting / long exposures and experimenting with star photography. The night was quite clear, which helped. The fog and low clouds helped tame the light pollution of nearby towns.

Photography Q&A With Automotive Photographer Tim Wallace On The Grid

I'm really excited today to have a special guest in the studio (and on our live show The Grid), Tim Wallace. Tim is an automotive photographer from the UK, and he's got some awesome stuff to share. We're going to talk about things like how you stay fresh when, say, you have to photograph the same exact car, but for a different person. I personally want to ask Tim how he got into this area of photography and does he feel he's in too small of a niche area of photography.

If you haven't heard Tim before, he's an incredibly insightful and great guest to have on the show so make sure you tune in in just under an hour.

It's what we do

There's something very special about the nature and landscape photographer. When writing off our own bodies and well-being to keep our tripods stable just to get. the. shot. is commonplace, you know that something's up. We climb, crawl, slide, jump, and dig to get the shot. We have no problems getting soaked with saltwater, baked in the desert sun, or get scraped up against a mountain... just as long as our camera stays dry, still and keeps exposing.

It's just what we do.

I was really happy to capture a moment that encapsulates my point. Here is +Matt Kloskowski taking refuge on an ocean rock as the tide came sweeping in. Now, I've seen Matt stand at the edge of much taller cliffs overlooking the ocean. I've also seen him subsequently get drenched from waves crashing and exploding against those cliffs. But he always... more »

Free +Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Presets - Tonal Contrast Effect

Here's some more free presets: http://mattyk.me/14MXn70

One of my favorite effects in Photoshop plug-ins is the Tonal Contrast effect. +onOne Software Perfect Effects has it, and Nik has it as well. But I know that lots of people still don’t use 3rd party plug-ins, so I set out to try to recreate the effect in Lightroom. After trying a bunch of different combinations I think I came pretty close.

Now, there’s definitely something in the “special sauce” that the plug-in companies use. So if you have the plug-ins (or are thinking of getting one), I’d still use them. Given the choice, I’d use the Perfect Effects Tonal Contrast effect before I’d ever use the one that I have here. But for those that don’t, this is a great alternative to help get that gritty/edgy/contrastylook right in Lig... more »

Your Camera Takes Really Nice Photos

I wrote a post about this on my blog today (http://mattyk.me/Vul2Yp) but I wanted to share here too. This past weekend I saw some family I hand't seen in a while so I brought my camera along with me to grab some photos for them. Plus, as a writer, once you use one family member in a book, guess what. All of the others start to ask when they’re going to get in a book too :)

Anyway, I took the photo here of my cousin and his son. Well, once I showed him, he loved the photo. So much so that an older aunt of mine heard, and came over to see it. And wouldn’t ya know it… what’s the first thing she said? “Wow! Your camera takes such great pictures!”. What do you say to that? Especially when it’s one of your aunts. I resisted the urge to say one of my favorite comebacks to that statement. A comeback I heard years ago and have yetto hear a bett... more »

Free Lightroom Black and White HDR Presets

There's some new HDR B&W Presets on my blog today:  http://mattyk.me/Vj8OfP

Some of the most popular presets I have are the #HDR  presets I created for #lightroom  4. As I looked through my website stats, I also realized that some of the other most popular presets were the black and white presets for both landscapes and portraits. Then it hit me – these could go perfectly together. People love the grit, edginess, and style that HDR presets give. And people love the look and feel of black and white. So why not put ‘em together?

So that’s just what I did this week. You’ll find they work best on landscape, travel and outdoor photos. I thought of doing some portrait ones, but HDR doesn’t look that great on people. They have 2 levels of intensity (Light, Strong). I tried 3, like I usually do, but therewasn’t enough... more »

A Landscape Photo Shoot Gone Bad

Everyone Shows Off Their Good Photos Right? But how many show off their bad ones. Well, I wrote a whole post with my not-so-good photos from my recent Death Valley trip with +Ricardo Lagos, +Brian Matiash, +Amy Heiden and +Brian Bonham.

It's really just meant to be a funny/make ya' chuckle post. I think (ok, hope) everyone has these types of photos. And honestly, I think it's part of the shooting process. We arrive at a location and we start warming up and working the location or people (whether it's landscapes or portraits), to zero in on that shot that we love.

So, for me, it's a totally natural process to take lots of bad photos :)

5 Quick Photo Observations From My Recent Death Valley Trip

Hey everyone. I’m on my flight heading back to the East coast from my recent Death Valley photography trip. As I was flying I was thinking of the trip and came up with 5 quick photography-related observations about my trip:

An Unexpected Lens Choice
I borrowed a Nikon 24mm f/1.4 lens to try out for this trip. I put it on while shooting my first sunrise last Friday and expected I would change out lenses pretty quickly because of it’s lack of zoom. You know what? I ended up keeping the lens on nearly all morning and only took it off when I wanted to put my longer 70-200 lens on. Then, for sunset, I again kept it on the whole time. I totally didn’t expect that and I’ll write more later this week on my blog (www.mattk.com) why I think it happened.

Why You Need A Strong Tripod

I wrote a post over on my blog on why you need a strong tripod (http://mattyk.me/TZ5cPw). Don't get me wrong. I love travel tripods. Hi everyone. I wanted to take a quick break from the usual Photoshop and photography stuff to tell you a little about some personal stuff that my brother is doing for the state of New Jersey. I’m sure by now that you’ve heard about the devastation that hit the East Coast of the US recently. Well, you may or may not know that I was actually born and raised in New Jersey (very close to the coastal areas that were hit hard). Many places that my family now lives in, has lived, and that I still visit today were hit pretty badly. Areas along the coast (sorry “shore” if you’re from NJ  ), where I spent my childhood summers are now gone.
Well, I’m extremely happy and proud to say that my brother, Ed Kloskowski, is doing something to help. He’s created an organization calledRun4NJ. On Nove... more »

Why So Many People Love Landscape Photography

I wrote a blog post today (http://mattyk.me/RRSGDi) with some thoughts on the topic. Basically, have you ever heard about (or see) one of those popular landscape photography locations that’s absolutely packed with people? Ever wonder why everyone is standing there taking the same exact photo that maybe tens of hundreds of thousands of photographers have taken before? If you haven’t witnessed it personally, then you’ve probably seen it. And if you haven’t, then just check out the photo above taken at Delicate Arch in Arches National Park near Moab, Utah. Believe it or not, you’re not even seeing the other 50+ people that were to the right of me in that photo. So with crowds often like this, and so many photos looking similar to each other, why do so many people love landscape photography?

To me, I think it's the processof actuall... more »
