Other kinds of dark matter postulated: entire dark galaxies possible too.
We don't even have a good handle on dark matter. Now there are suggestions for multiple kinds of dark matter, including a type that might have properties like that of ordinary matter.

Well, here we have the first-ever images of the orbital structure of the the simplest atom of them all, hydrogen. This must be how the field of spectroscopy seemed when the first "images" of the Balmer Series were obtained.

Does the second photo in this series show the impact spot on the Skagit River Bridge?
The cross member shows a potential impact point that is consistent with witness observations of an impact on the right side of the bridge at a location where the lateral stabilizing bars dip down. The orange paint visible is an older layer of paint made visible after the outer layer was knocked off from the impact and beam flexing.

Another day, another social media service closure
Interesting media sharing service Jux has decided to pull the proverbial plug as per the following announcement:
YOUR WORK HAS BROUGHT MEANING
to us, to millions of others, and hopefully to you. By providing a creative layer on top of words and images, Jux has helped you build narratives, hold attention, and connect people.
Unfortunately, Jux has not grown enough to attract further investment. The service will close on August 31, 2013. Until then, you may retrieve your photos, words, and links here.
We apologize for the mammoth inconvenience and trust your stories will continue.

Learn about structural failure in bridges: Skagit River Bridge collapses on I-5 north of Seattle WA
For many years West Point Naval Academy has run the West Point Bridge Design competition for students. They produce a wonderful piece of software. It is free and available for both PC and Mac platforms. The screen shot below shows a failure of a horizontal chord on a Warren Truss Through Bridge, similar to the Skagit River Bridge. In last evening's collapse a lateral truss was struck by a large load, possibly dragging one of the horizontal chords inward, causing it to buckle.

Learn a little about bridge design: Skagit River Bridge collapses on I-5 north of Seattle WA
Here's a shot taken from the West Point Bridge Designer program which is issued to students across North America. It shows a Warren Through Truss, similar to the collapsed section of the Skagit River Bridge. In this screen grab, one of the upper horizontal segments has been intentionally reduced in thickness, resulting in a buckling failure as the test truck crosses the span. Whether this occurred on the Skagit Bridge will not be known for some time. However, photos from the scene bear a striking resemblance to this simple simulation.
If you want to try out the WPBD program, get it here:

Samsung Galaxy S4 ships on Verizon: Shootout of camera
The Samsung Galaxy S4 just arrived in Verizon stores today. I dropped by. One thing I noticed? No lines at the stores. Of course there weren't many S4's there either (I bought it from a smaller store in Pacifica, California). I got the last one, a white one. Yes, I paid my own money for it. Samsung doesn't give me review units.
Here are images from it compared with my HTC DNA and my Google Glass (the Glass is far worse, hope they pick a better imaging sensor for that when it ships to public next year). So far I like the Samsung a LOT better than the HTC. First if all it's running the current Android, 4.2.2, while the DNA is running 4.1.1. Too bad HTC, but Samsung beat you there. After that everything else is better too. The screen is better, the speed is better.
Can you see any differences from t... more »

Google Cards for travel time
My Android phone pops up a card about travel time to and from work. I'm going to start keeping track of its performance. Up until now I haven't paid attention to it. Yesterday it was pretty much spot-on for the trip home. This morning it was under by 40 minutes on the actual trip (given that it suggested 20 minutes initially that's not too good).
I'm unclear on how to force the card to stay, or reappear. During the journey only two weather cards were to be found.

The world's first completely paperless public library is scheduled to open this summer in Bexar County, Texas, in the US. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-22160990
It will have 100 e-readers on loan, and dozens of screens where the public will be able to browse, study, and learn digital skills. However it's likely most users will access BiblioTech's initial holding of 10,000 digital titles from the comfort of their homes.

Problem with Auto backup?
Playing around with Auto Backup (on Android phone). I notice that the backup thumbnails all seem to be one out of sequence. Clicking on one thumbnail brings up the full image for the next photo.
I'm also wondering about the Select All option. I thought I could use that to say delete a sequence of photos. They indeed all select but the deletion proceeds one at a time. So what is the point of the Select All option?
