What if you put a Retina display on an iPad? What if solar panels cost half as much as they do now? What if you could build a race car that’s so small you can only see it with a microscope? What if airplanes could fly at supersonic speeds without that sonic boom that makes them too annoying to fly over land?

That’s just the beginning of the wonders we uncovered this week, where we found the most astonishing iPhone dock ever built, took a brand-new laptop swathed in Gorilla Glass for a spin, found a way to indulge our kookyest desires with an MP3 doorbell and even discovered a way to use a Microsoft Kinect that we never dreamed of.

Take a look at this sneak peek at an uncanny new feature in Adobe's upcoming Photoshop CS6.

This is getting to be almost miraculous. I already like content-aware fill in Photoshop CS5.5 and use it often, but this is taking that idea a whole lot further.

Can't wait to try it. What do you think?

Check out what the new "Lux" tool in Instagram can do. In shots with dark shadows, it acts like HDR, and in other shots, it boosts the saturation and contrast and tastefully enhances the shadows.

It's a useful new tool included in the free Instagram app (iPhone only, unfortunately), upgrade is now available.

This week, I found some cool stuff and got my hands on two of the items on the Top 10 list.

One was the Motorola Droid Razr MAXX, a better version of the first Droid Razr with a longer-lasting battery. I like the idea of a longer-lasting battery, and there's a great side effect: the Droid's back isn't as ugly as the first one's. There's no chin sticking out the top -- now there's a gentle curve that looks quite nice. It's a tiny bit thicker, but that's not a big deal at all.

The downside: Gingerbread. Sorry, but I think it's clunky and primitive. It's ugly and its scrolling is choppy. After using Ice Cream Sandwich in the Galaxy Nexus for a month, it's tough to step all the way back to Gingerbread. Too bad there can't just be a big upgrade for all Android phones, all at once.

The other hands-on I did for this week's Top... more »

In addition, I've shared this image directly from Google Earth.

It's an upgrade that's worthy of more than just a point upgrade. Why not Google Earth 7.0?

Who owns your Twitter account -- you or the company you're working for? My writing partner John Biggs takes an in-depth look at that sticky question in this outstanding feature he wrote for The New York Times.

At first glance, it seems if you go into a company owning a personal Twitter account, that's yours, no matter how many followers you amass while working at that company.

But it gets complicated, and a court case will consider this question next summer. Johnny does an excellent job of telling this multifaceted story -- worth a close reading if you care about your digital rights.

I just got a call from #GoDaddy. The rep said he noticed that I'd transferred my 60+ domains away (I've still got a few there that I'm working on transferring, but am being conservative with, since I can't afford any downtime at all with them), and wanted to know if I'd tell them why. I got to tell them that it was because of their #SOPA support, and that I couldn't in good conscience give my money to a tech company that would support legislation like that. I told him I was aware that they had reversed their position, but that their explicit support of it in the first place had cost them my confidence in them, as it is at the best viciously ignorant, and at worst, malicious. The rep was quite sincere in his apology to me, asked if there was anything they could do to win me back. He had a "We support IP protections, and now realize that support of SOPA is too broad"... more »

Anybody watching Downton Abbey, the Emmy-winning period piece from the UK? It's now about to start its second season on PBS in the US, but in the UK, season 2 has already ended and there was a fantastic Christmas special on last night.

Too bad there's such a delay between airings in the US and UK. Now, the show has the green light for season 3. Don't look up the UK version, though, because there are major spoilers in there, even in the pics.

But I hear season 2 and the Christmas specials can be found somewhere on the pre-SOPA Intarwebs.

"Charlie Bit My Finger" has earned more than $150,000!?

Think about it: There's something wonderful about this -- the true democratization of video.

When I started in my broadcast career way back in '78, you needed a $2 million edit suite and a TV station to reach a few hundred thousand people. Now you can do that with a smartphone, with far better quality and a nearly unlimited worldwide audience.

The fact that you can shoot a video in the car and place it (in completely raw, unedited form) in front of the world and then earn $150K with it is astonishing to me.

If Apple’s hands-free assistant Siri one day turned against the human race and transformed into a freakishly evil killing machine, well, that would really, really suck.

However improbable, that hypothetical situation is exactly the fodder Rooster Teeth Productions used to create “Siri: The Holiday Horror Movie (Trailer)” clip.
