This is the Monteverde Lodge in Monteverde, Costa Rica. It's a great spot to stay if you ever get the chance to visit Costa Rica, which I highly recommend.

There were many interesting plants in Costa Rica that you just don't see in the northeast US. This one had such a neat texture, and I thought the monochrome treatment really showed it off.

This is another shot from my time at the hummingbird bush. Costa Rica has almost 60 species of hummingbirds, I think I only saw about 8 or 9.

Something about this shot intrigues me. Maybe it's the contrast between the man-made and the natural world, maybe the contrast between light and dark, maybe the decision between going in or going out...

It's just so cool to be walking by the canal, and see things I would never see at home! This guy was just grazing and warming in the sun. He was about 5 ft long from nose to tail. This was in Tortuguero, Costa Rica.

Here is another hummingbird shot from Costa Rica. This is shot in the wild, against an out of focus cloudy sky behind. This was a great spot, with lots of birds humming around these bushes.

This may be my favorite shot of the Arenal Volcano. The clouds, the rocky texture, and the sky all come together to really show off this peak.

This is the Jacana, a bird I met in Costa Rica. This bird lives among these plants that float on the water, and uses the long legs to get around on the surface, foraging for the next meal.

This is a nice waterfall in the Arenal Volcano National Park in Costa Rica. We saw this back in the forest off the Hanging Bridges. I managed to climb through the water and rocks to get a much closer shot.

This shot is a bit downstream from the LaFortuna waterfall in LaFortuna, Costa Rica. This was a really fun place to explore, with lots to look at after you saw the main falls. I loved hopping around and through these rocks.

This is the Arenal Volcano, in Costa Rica. Apparently it is not uncommon to visit the area and never see the top of the volcano, it is so often covered in the clouds. I can believe it, since during the 3 and a half days we spent in the area, we could only see the top for about 9 hours on one day. This shot was taken about 5:30 in the morning, and by about 3 that afternoon, the peak was no longer visible.

Continuing with the landscape of Costa Rica, here is a shot as we crossed the continental divide. There are no worries of steepness or hills, it's all just farm land. Cows or plants, either has no problem climbing the slopes.

This is the LaFortuna waterfall in LaFortuna, #costarica  for #waterfallwednesday  . This is a beuatiful place to be after descending the almost 500 steps down into the gorge. You can get some relief with a dip in the water, however it is quite cold!

OK, so after a nasty bit of computer downtime, a disk format and restore, I can get back to the business of sharing some photos.
This is a shot of the Arenal Volcano in central Costa Rica. There are interesting cloud formations around the volcano that change by the minute it seems. Most of the time the volcano isn't even visible, but it opened up for about 8 hours on one day during my trip.

So I've just returned from my trip to Costa Rica. It is a beautiful place, and I recommend you visit if you ever get the chance. I now also have a couple thousand frames to go through, and I will post new photos as I go.
To start things off, I'm posting this photo of a hummingbird, of which there are something like 23 species in Costa Rica. I can't remember which this is, so feel free to comment if you know. This photo was shot near the Monteverde Biological Reserve.

The area of Massachusetts I live in is referred to as Apple country, because there are so many apple orchards around. In this shot the apple trees are on the left edge, and I guess this farmer has corn as well!
I have been somewhat fascinated by the cell tower, as I've shot it many times from many angles, probably due to the contrast it offers against the agricultural landscape.
This photo also has some nice #leadinglinesmonday   as the fence and clouds lead right to the tower.

I do a fair bit of shooting youth sports. Basketball is one that allows pretty good access to the court, so it's possible to get close to the action. Of course, that amplifies the speed at which things happen, so you have to be ready all the time.
The lighting in this particular gym was pretty good, but I still was shooting at ISO 6400. My Nikon D600 does a great job, even at this high ISO.
This shot shows the intensity of the game, even at a 5th grade level. I didn't realize there could be this kind of facial distortion from movement on an 11 year old face!

So with the impending doom of the approaching super storm in the North East, what should you do? Many people are at the grocery store, or preparing their home with batteries, and firewood. I think it's a much better idea to go outside. You never know who you'll meet.

It's the end of January here in New England, typically the coldest part of Winter. But somewhere in the higher ups a decision was made to make it 50º here today. Usually we get snow fall, but today it looks like snow UP, as it all turns to fog. This is at the local arboretum.
