Good overview about picking tech for a startup. It reminds me of something Marco Arment's said several times about Instapaper, that he chose a boring tech stack it tends to be much more reliable and you get much more answers when having a problem.
Instagram uses a "boring" SQL database (Postgres), but combines it with NOSQL for redundant queues, which seems to be a good example of polyglot persistence done right (http://martinfowler.com/bliki/PolyglotPersistence.html).

Why We'll Never Meet Aliens?
In a long essay, +Paul Tyma makes the case that we'll never meet aliens. And his conclusion is that we'll never meet aliens because once they've developed the technology to travel the great distances between stars, the trip will be meaningless.
I think there's a lot of validity to this argument. We anthropomorphize aliens based on our current state of technology. We imagine aliens flying around in their alien spaceships, sipping their alien coffees, perusing alien laptops. "We come in peace."
But you have to comprehend the compounding effect of exponential technological advancement. iPhones didn't exist 5 years ago, now we consider smartphones a commodity. TV Review: Defiance - Pilot Episode
This is the most full on science fictiony show that SyFy has attempted in some time. And it has potential, but there are some major pitfalls to be avoided.
Pilot episodes are tough to pull off well. Even with a double length episode there's just so much to try and pack in between establishing characters, world building and you know... plot.
In this case it's the plot that really suffers.
To call it basic would be giving it more credit than it's due. It does just enough to introduce the characters and the setting plus some sort of season arc and really nothing else. There's even one of those leader gives rousing speech and convinces people to fight moments.
