Fallen (Please view Large)

One of my favorite places on the walk from Kirstenbosch Gardens to the 310m contour path on Table Mountain. The way leads past the contour path and up Skeleton Gorge to the top of the mountain.

If I'm not climbing the mountain but only going for a walk on the contour path I often sit on the trunk in the lower right corner and just enjoy the peace and sounds of the forest.

Although it appears as if a couple of trees have fallen they're actually still very much alive. The downhill path runs under the branches.

Cape Grassbird (Sphenoeacus afer) Taken at Cape Point Nature Reserve, Table Mountain National Park, Western Cape, South Africa...

I was pretty pleased to get a picture (however bad) of this bird on the top branches (twigs) of this bush as normally it stays in dense vegetation...

The book describes one of its distinguishing features as a "ratty tail" sounds legit :)

Since it's the beginning of winter and the rainy season here many flowers are starting to bloom after the long dry summer, witness this Gazania from my wife's garden (we also have flowers in summer :) )

I don't know about anyone else's experience since the change but hash tags seem totally messed up...

Searching for #birdpoker for example and selecting most recent gives me butterflies, insects, vulgar memes, jokes, bed and breakfasts, landscapes, sunsets, birds shared to other hash tags but not #birdpoker

In fact anything and everything except Terns (OK there are a few if I scroll down far enough. Some of the other themes seem to be in the same state of disarray.

Hope the guys at Google responsible for G+ sort this out relatively fast...

Otherwise I have no hassle with the new format.

May, being the start of winter in the Southern Hemisphere is in the African Spoonbills breeding season. The female lays 3-5 eggs generally during April or May, although the season continues through until spring.

My wife raised him from the egg. There was one more than we thought she'd laid but we must have miscounted in all the excitement...
True, he's a bit small, well very small, for his age but I'm sure he'll put on a growth spurt shortly and catch up to his brothers and sisters as well as starting to look like me...

Male & Female Spur Winged Geese (Plectropterus gambensis) & Reed Cormorant (Phalacrocorax africanus) Taken at Rondevlei Wetlands Reserve, Grassy Park, Cape Town.

Both birds occur in sub-Saharan Africa mainly found near freshwater lakes, dams and rivers.

The Spur Winged Goose is Africa's largest waterfowl and on average the largest wild goose in the world

Anyone at all...

Tell me why some photos appear the full width of all the columns while some are confined to the width of a single column?

It doesn't appear to be related to the original size of the photo nor the number of +1's received.

While some of the photos look nice some seem to have been uploaded in a small size and the expansion makes them fuzzy...

African Purple Swamphen walking past African Darter at Rondevlei Wetlands Reserve, Grassy Park, Cape Town...

Although a water bird the feathers of the darter do not contain any oil and are thus not waterproof which assists it in diving or swimming with just its head and neck above the water.
Although classed as a wader the Purple Swamphen is a good swimmer even though it doesn't have webbed feet.

My wife got her new car on Monday so yesterday we decided to try it out and drove to Franschhoek (Lit. French Corner) where French Huguenots who fled religious persecution settled in 1688.

They had a major influence on the South African wine industry...

On the way we decided to detour to Fairview, a wine farm which also make some great cheeses. On the way I took this photo of the Simonsvlei wine farm nestled below the Simonsberg.

Nothing to do with the photo but I've had to take off all the adverts on my website www.africhef.com because some #$&!!@ has been repeatedly clicking on them, i.e clicking on the same ad multiple times within a few minutes, which is click fraud...

Well, that's a chunk of my income gone...

Forest Canary

Forest Canary (Crithagra scotops) Afrikaans: Gestreepte Kanarie.

Endemic to South Africa Occurs in forests and clearings in a narrow coastal band stretching from the Western Cape to KwaZulu-Natal and then inland.

The book says its song often contains "querulous" notes, looking at its expression I'm not surprised...

Diet consists of fruit, flowers, leaves and insects.

Black Bug

Well, couldn't think of any other title :)

Dunno anything about it except its got scary-looking spiked legs & wings so it must fly. Actually pretty small about 2.5cm (1 inch) if I remember correctly.

Give them half a chance and he and his companions will snatch food off your plate right under your nose. I've seen one fly by and snatch a chip/fry off a guy's fork as he was transferring it to his mouth...

Please Go AWAY!!!

Went into a rarely used bird-hide in the West Coast National Park, Western Cape, South Africa a few months ago & noted with some annoyance that the shutters over the view ports had been left open...
Anyway went about my business of setting up until I heard a faint noise almost by my ear, turned to have a look and there was this nesting swallow only a couple of feet above my head looking at me with a great deal of concern...
Anyway, took one quick shot & got out of there, obviously leaving the shutters open & a note on the hide door...photography session aborted.
Typical example of why one should always leave hide shutters/doors closed.
