Never thought about it this way before - quite scary.

Instagram is now available for Android devices so I thought I would give it a spin to see what all the iPhone users are on about.
Sorry, I don't get it. Take a mediocre photo with your cameraphone and then on purpose use the app to make it look even worse than it actually is. Maybe I've spent too much time looking through a decent viewfinder to find this process appealing.

A fantastic pictorial tribute to a great human being.

My brief thoughts after upgrading to Windows 8 Beta.

On Friday I took the plunge and decided to upgrade my work computer to Windows 8 Consumer Beta version. The main reason for this is to help me to make a decision whether to go with a Windows 8 based ARM tablet or a tablet running Android as a portable device to help with my photography.

First off, let me say that the installation went very smoothly. The only slight hiccup was the notification that my current anti-virus software was not compatible and that I would have to uninstall it first. Once that was done, the rest of the installation went smoothly and took about 40 minutes to complete.

So what are my thoughts on the Windows 8 Metro interface and the usability? Metro is great and gives a quick view to most of the incoming data that I require: upcoming calendar items, new email, instant messages, etc. One thing I do... more »

After nearly 1 and a half months without an internet connection I finally gave up and changed my ISP. It is really good to be back online.

On to one of my favourite subjects: this female Rhino was busy using the rubbing post (visible between her front legs) while her calf frolicked around her. These rubbing posts are tree stumps that eventually get a rounded top due to the rubbing by rhinos to get rid of parasites like ticks.

The second photo shows just the rubbing post with it's nice smooth top - clearly rhino hide is just as good as sandpaper :-)

These photos were taken in the Umfolozi / Hluhluwe Game Reserve.

On a more serious note, 2 rhino poachers were shot and 2 were captured in a rhino anti-poaching exercise in the early hours of yesterday morning in the Kruger National Park. +1 for the rhinos.

Garden Castle in the Drakensberg, South Africa. This was taken early evening just after a storm had passed through. The clouds started to disperse to reveal a beautiful coloured sunset.
2 exposures (+2 and -2 stops) merged together.

This little frog (no idea what type - maybe +Candace Hansen can help here?) was hiding away in the leaves of a water lily flower.

So far this year alone 342 rhino have been poached in South Africa - a new record high. This is a sickening statistic. If it carries on like this, beautiful animals like the ones shown below will no longer exist. Both these photos of White Rhino were taken in Umfolozi Game Reserve - I can only imagine what the horn on the magnificent rhino in the second photo would fetch on the black market.

A beautiful (and somewhat scary) looking tiger moth. Its camouflage against the tree bark is excellent.

I love the pastel colours in this image - very calming. However, I think I may enjoy the image more if the flower was placed on the left hand side - maybe it has something to do with my brain having learnt to naturally move from left to right?

Photo taken in Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve, South Africa. These 2 swallows just seemed to pose perfectly together.

A male Southern Red Bishop in breeding plumage. They were naturally skittish and it took me over an hour to get into position with a 300mm f4 lens to be able to capture him in this pose.
