Scotland Photowalk 2015221Here is the official Event for the 2013 UK Seaside Photowalk. The official kickoff will be Saturday morning, probably around 9am. Then again, there will be people out much earlier to catch the sunrise, that's for sure.  Please indicate whether you will be joining us, so we have a rough idea of how many people we can expect. Please note that this is not a confirmed booking or anything. Whoever shows up will be welcome.  If you can join us only for one day, Saturday or Sunday, that'll be fine, too, of course. We'll make sure to announce tour details and meeting points in a few weeks.  We hope to see you all there. And if someone has good connections to the weather gods, please let them know that we'd prefer the "no rain" option.  Cheers Athena & AndyUK Seaside Photowalk2013-10-05 09:00:0071

Hey plussers!

This shot was taken a few days ago at sunrise. The days are long at the moment and the sun rises about 4 am so it was a very early start. Fortunately this poppy field is only 5 minutes drive from home! Read on to find out how I took this photo and the post processing...

How I took the shot
EXIF details are in the photo but to summarise: 5DmII, 24-105L, ISO 100, f/16, 1.6 sec, 24mm, 2 filters: Lee 0.6 GND soft and a Lee 0.6 GND hard, both ending bang on the horizon but just covering the sun to make it a little less bright. There was no wind so I was able to take a longish shutter speed but this meant a tripod was required.

Processing
Processed using Lightroom 4, Color Efex 4 and Photoshop. First, I did basic tweaks to highlights, shadows, whites and blacks. Then boosted clarity and reduced saturation marginally as the whole image was just... more »

Apologies for the absence of late. I had to rebuild my home PC a few weeks back and I'm now building a client website in a fairly short time frame.  All means I have very little time for social networking at the moment but I hope to be back in a week or two. I've still got plenty of shots to post from the +UK Seaside Photowalk 2013! Hope everyone is keeping well.

Evening G+!

Here's another photo from the #dorsetphotowalk2013  this time of Durdle Door at sunrise before the public and hoards of photographers descended ;)  Weather wasn't good and had to take shots in the rain trying my best to shelter the filters.  Took quite a few photos and glad I did as this was the only one without rain drops ruining the shot. Processed using Lightroom and Color Efex Pro 4.

A a landscape photographer, I am always hunting for the perfect weather conditions and as a result my photos have proably become a little samey. The beauty about a photowalk is that it is planned months in advance and you can't choose what weather you get so you have to work with the conditions. During the #dorsetphotowalk2013   I found myself in conditions I would not normally shoot (dull rainy mornings, bright contrasty days) and as a result I've got some photos which feel a little different to my normal shots. I learnt a lot at the Dorset photowalk and enjoyed being in the comapny of so many great photographers that I now call friends :)

Fantastic day at the #dorsetphotowalk2013 with 30 other photographers from all over Europe (and one from South Africa). Took this using a Samsung Galaxy S3 in panorama mode, then edited using Snapseed. I can't really tell how well it came out, sometimes the stitching can be a bit dodgy. Perhaps someone on desktop can let me know? Ta!

DISASTER!!!

On the eve of the #dorsetphotowalk2013  my tripod has only gone and broken for the second time in two weeks.  Except this time, I can't do a quick fix and it will be no good for the coming photowalk weekend. Sigh  :(

I have an old tripod but it's incredibly primitive and only has 2 way movement. I'm thinking I can revitalise it though by getting a decent ball head. So, after a couple of hours of late night research I think I've settled on either the Giottos 1311-652, or for a few quid more the 1300-652 (which can take a greater weight; both get good reviews). Can anyone offer any wise words of wisdom on my ball head idea and/or the Giottos models before I (or more likely my wife!) make a quick dash for the camera shop tomorrow?

Many many thanks, Gez.

Gooday Plussers!

Another shot from the recent Google+ photowalk at the +British Museum. This image is actually a 3 image stack to remove photographers from the shot. Image 1 for the foreground, image 2 for the left side of the main subject and image 3 for the right side. Some minor adjustments made in Lightroom before main processing done in Silver Efex 2.

Cheers, Gez.

Hey plussers!

I was incredibly fortunate to be invited to a Google+ photowalk at the +British Museum last Tuesday.  Organised by +Natalia Cano and with googlers such as +Vic Gundotra +Ade Oshineye +Beth Foster (sporting a pair of #googleglasses ) and many talented photographers in attendance, it was a thoroughly enjoyable event. Over the past few days I've seen some super shots of the museum so I figured it was about time I made a contribution.

I've only taken a couple of shots (literally) because I was trying to get big room shots with no other photographers, cameras or tripods. For this first image of the Rosetta Stone, that required a certain amount of patience: about 10 minutes of it!

Hope you like it!

Okay, so it's been a bit too long since my last post but then my PC has been on the blink again. It's still not right and is constantly freezing which is incredibly frustrating. I'm lucky to get this far and on to G+ so I'm going to quickly post this shot before my PC freezes!

Home - His First Sunset

I took this photo early in the year and never intended to share it. It was only ever going to reside in the family photo album and not make it to social media. But then along came #plusonemagazine2  and it's theme: Home. I've taken landscape photos of places close to home that were technically far better than this image, but I felt the need to share this as it fitted the brief so well.

So what can I say about it? Well, this is the seafront close to where I live and this is my 2 year old son watching a sunset for the very first time. It was a cold winters day and he, my wife and I had this little area all to ourselves. It had been a windy day but the winds had eased and it was calm and peaceful. It gave my wife and I time to consider our lives and how lucky we are. We wondered (and still do today) what was going through our sons mind as he... more »

As promised, here is a more sensible photo than the last one. This is Brighton's band stand on the sea front. When this shot was taken there was little light left in the sky, but the long exposure brought back much of the light and gave for some lovely soft clouds. And who says blue and green should never be seen? I think they look lovely together!

Hey G+!

I was going to upload this yesterday but my PC graphics card died. At least, that's what I thought had happened. But having deleted the graphics drivers and reinstalled them I'm back up and running... for now!

This shot is another from Kassioppi on the greek island of Corfu. It was taken the same evening as my previous image. Hope you like it!

A month back I went on holiday to the Greek island of Corfu. It was more of a relaxing family break than a photography trip, but I did manage one evening to get out and take a few sunset photos. This shot of a small cove was taken on the Kassioppi pennisular. Processed using Lightroom and Nik Color Efex.

New Highlights - How To Change Them!

Yesterday, Google+ announced some new features, one of which was the ability to change your highlight photos. This is an awesome change as it allows you to really make this area quite sweet looking. I noticed quite a few people were asking how to do this as there were no instructions so here's how (steps 3-5 in the screenshot attached):

1.) Go to the left hand side pop up nav bar and select Photos
2.) In grey bar across the top select Highlights
3.) Select the images you want to highlight (or un-highlight) by clicking the tick at the top left of each image. The selected images will have a blue border round them.
4.) In the blue bar across the top, select More
5.) Check or un-check the Highlight option

You can also go into any of your albums and repeat steps 3-5 as above.  Hope this helped!___

Hey G+!

For a long time I've been wanting to do a colour shot of Brighton's West Pier.  I've shot it several times in B&W but never in colour. So just over a week ago the weather conditions were perfect so I gave it a go and I couldn't be happier with the result. Hope you like it :)

Afternoon G+!

This is the last of my B&W series and whilst the previous images were based in the UK, this shot was actually taken on the Greek island of Corfu. I hope you like it and you've enjoyed the series.

This image actually leads nicely into my next series which is going to be seascapes and I'll be starting with what I believe is my best ever photo to date!

As always, thanks for all the plusses, shares and comments on my images, it is always much appreciated :)

Want a virtual business card? Check out About.Me

My good friend +Heidi Anne Morris introduced me to About.Me some 6 months ago but I've only just got round to doing my page:

http://about.me/gerard_charnley

If you've not heard of About.Me before, think of it as a simple online business card. A simple URL that you can share with anyone and which contains links to your entire internet presence, from Google+ to Facebook to your very own website.

If you have an About.Me page, share it in the comments below and lets compare! If you don't have one, go and create one and then share it here - it only takes 5 minutes.

Apologies for being somewhat absent from G+. I've been busy both with job hunting and getting out and about taking photos! Lots of stuff to post when I get round to processing the images.

Here's number 4 in my B&W mini series. Hope you like it!

Hey G+!

Continuing with the black and white mini series I've returned to one of my favourite subjects: Brighton's west pier. Several decades ago this pier use to be a magnificent structure that stretched out into the English channel, but after many years of abuse from the sea and a fire that left just the shell remaining, all that remains is the main end building and a few struts nearer the beach. There have been talks of rebuilding it, but those talks have been going on for years. Until that happens, it makes an excellent abstract photography subject!

Hello plussers!

I'm starting a new landscape black and white mini series today with this photo being taken a couple of weeks back. I saw this barn back in the winter and figured it would make a great sunrise/sunset shot when the wheat fields where growing so I've patiently waited until now to get the shot. Unfortunately, the lay of the land didn't lend itself well to a sunrise/sunset shot so I opted for this black and white photo instead. I hope you like it :)

New +1 activity in streams - love or loathe?

Hmmm, I'm somewhat undecided on +1 activity appearing in the stream and it seems the G+ community is equally divided. There are as many posts praising the new feature as there are those slamming it.

On the one hand it could be great for emerging posters as top quality content might be plussed repeatedly. As a photographer,  this feature might be great for highly talented emerging photographers trying to get noticed.

On the other hand, it might be the junk that emerges rather than the high quality content, similar to the stuff you get on FB that just doesn't interest you.

I hold some comfort in the thought that it's likely the people I follow will plus content I'm likely to enjoy. We shall see I guess. For now, I'm left undecided on the matter and since I don't yet have the functionality I... more »

Hi G+!

I always enjoy it when photographers post images of their kit bags. Not sure why, I guess I'm just a nosey bugger and like seeing what equipment others use! Anyway, I'm off on a landscape shoot at the moment but I took this shot just before I left.

My favourite items? Well, apart from the obvious like camera, lenses and filters (especially my ND110 LE filter), it has to be the bean bag which is super for those low lying shots where you need a little stability.

Gooday plussers!

After all the warmth and colour of my poppy series, I've decided to make a return to B&W landscapes for a short while. But before I do here's a splash of green to freshen things up!

Sorry, no process notes this time as rather busy at the moment!

Hi plussers!

This is the last of my poppy shots as I'll be moving on to other landscape shots. I hope you've enjoyed the series.

Taking the shot
The evening I took this photo there was a bit of a breeze so there was some motion in the poppies. I initially set the camera at ISO100, but the shutter speed was a little long for my liking and I feared too much blur in the poppies. So I increased ISO a knotch to 200 and increased the shutter speed to 1/6 second which gave me a little motion in the poppies but not too much that it was a complete blur. Aperture was set at f/16 whilst the camera was on a tripod with the usual 2 GND's: a Lee 0.6 soft and a Lee 0.6 hard to reduce the brightness of the sky. IS switched off, focussing set to auto.

My memory of this is a little hazy because I processed the photo almost a week ago, but it would have probably been very similar to my previous post, i.e. 95% of the work is done in Lightroom with a few tweaks done in Color Efex Pro. I seem to recall adding a GND filter in CEP and reducing upper tonality as the sun was still very strong in my image. I was a little late in arriving at the scene and missed the best light by a matter of minutes when the sun was partially diffused by the clouds.

Cheers, Gez.

Hi plussers,

Is there a way to sort albums in G+? There use to be a way using picasa web or picasa software for changing the album date so that it works with the default album sort (newest to oldest albums), but I can't find a way of doing this in picasa software. Googling returns loads of links from 2011 when this was possible.

Cheers, Gez.

Morning G+,

Wow, absolutely gob smacked at how many shares, plusses and comments yesterdays image has so far received. I rarely get above 100 so 850 and counting is mind boggling. Massive thank you to everyone :D

+kyla rushton asked for a before shot of yesterdays poppy image. Well, I thought I'd go one better and share a few snaps I took with my mobile phone (Galaxy S3) of the camera setup.

The main picture shows the camera setup. This shot was taken about 10 minutes before yesterdays image and the sun had not yet risen (so the poppies had not yet been backlit). The only processing I have done is to boost the exposure as my phone took a very dark image. Note the sky is bright because my phone doesn't have grads - the image on the camera shows the effect of the 2 ND grads and the darkened sky.

I've got one more photo of this poppy field to share - a sunset shot so watch this space!

Cheers!

Then boosted clarity and reduced saturation marginally as the whole image was just... more »

Processing
Processed using Lightroom 4, Color Efex 4 and Photoshop. First, I did basic tweaks to highlights, shadows, whites and blacks. Then boosted clarity and reduced saturation marginally as the whole image was just a little strong for my liking. I reduced highlights and lights ever so slightly as the sun area despite the grads was still a little overexposed. I left sharpening at default but I increased the noise reduction a little to remove some noise in the dark sky.

Then into Color Efex 4 and I added a pro contrast filter. I tried a GND filter and decreased both upper and lower tonality, but then swiftly removed it as I felt it made the image too dark.

Finally into Photoshop and using clone tool, hue adjustment layers and burning to remove some sun flare spots. It was this last step that took the longest as the sun spots were in really difficult positions where there was little room for manoeuvre. Notice there is still one sun spot very close to the sun but this one was beyond my skills!

Shout if you have questions. Don't forget if you do a write up like this on your own posts, then add the #mpt  (my photography techniques) hashtag so you can search and read about other peoples experiences. Cheers!

So this is where I live: Brighton, on the UK south coast. The stadium is the home of Brighton and Hove Albion football club and at this time of year, the surrounding countryside is stunning! Read on to find out how I took this shot...

As per my previous post, I'm tagging this with #mpt (My Photography Techniques). This is not about preaching how to take a photo but simply the steps I took. I'm hoping others will follow and share their techniques and this will become a useful hashtag for people to learn from.

Taking the shot

Exif contains the main details but ISO50, narrow aperture of f16 to get good DOF and shutter speed 1/20 to get a little movement in the poppies. Also used two filters - a Lee 0.6 GND hard filter with dark edge at the top and a Lee 0.6 GND soft filter with dark edge at the bottom, i.e. reversed. Taking the shot

Exif contains the main details but ISO50, narrow aperture of f16 to get good DOF and shutter speed 1/20 to get a little movement in the poppies. Also used two filters - a Lee 0.6 GND hard filter with dark edge at the top and a Lee 0.6 GND soft filter with dark edge at the bottom, i.e. reversed. I've never done this before but I've read about it many times and thought I would give it a go. I'm definitely pleased with the outcome and the dark bottom edge, so will be using this technique again in the future. I also used a tripod. The photo was taken at midday. It was very windy, so cloud shadows were racing across the poppies so I just waited for a time when there were some good shadows and the stadium was also lit up.

Post Processing

The 0.6 filters weren't really enough to achieve the effect I required (I dont have 0.9s) so I used Lightroom 4.1 to add two additional GND filters in post processing, dark top to horizon and dark bottom to 1/3 of the way up - not much mind you, just a subtle boost. Also added additional clarity, contrast, increase lights, decreased darks. No cropping, no saturation boost (due to time of day, everything was lit perfectly). I then ran the image through Color Efex 4 and applied a white neutraliser on the pale blues to make the clouds a more natural white (the clouds were way too blue). I also applied a pro contrast and a sunlight but the settings on these were <5% so the effects were minimal.

Feel free to ask questions! Cheers!___

Since yesterday was the hottest day of the year so far here in the UK, I decided to take an evening stroll up the South Downs which turned into a 5 mile hike! This is my favourite photo from the walk. I've been a bit bored with G+ of late, it just seems like there are so many photos and whilst they are all great and they have wonderful stories, there's never much there for people to learn from. So I intend to put a lot more into my write up's with regard to taking the shot and processing. Please dont take this as gospel and the way a photo must be taken. I'm by no means an expert, this is just how I do it and take from it what you want  :)

Hand held. Rest of EXIF info can be got from the photo. Compositionally, I aimed for a low shot skimming the top of the wheat field, with poppy bottom left, balanced by sun diagonally opposite right.

Processing

Processed using Lightroom 4.1, added an additional graduated filter on the sky reducing exposure a little more, another gradient on the crops to reduce the color temperature and cool it slightly (to bring out the greens better). A slight clarity increase to compensate for a hazy day, a slight contrast increase and a little sharpening. No crop.

Edit: tagged with #mpt  (My Photography Techniques). Feel free to use this tag to share your techniques with others and invite techniques discussions :)___

Wow, life got in the way again of G+! This shot was taken back in March one cold evening and it is of Balcombe Viaduct in East Sussex. A train goes over this bridge roughly once a minute as it is the mainline from Brighton to London.

Hey plussers!

Today is a special day for I've finally got my first magazine feature. The publication is the well known UK mag Amateur Photographer and I'm in the Reader Spotlight section - page 32 for anyone who wants to go and have a nosey.  I'm absolutely chuffed to bits right now - more on my blog at www.gerardcharnley.co.uk/blog

Urban Wildlife Portrait I

I did say I was going to move onto landscape photography but that was before a fox turned up in our garden!  This friendly fox stayed in our garden for about 10 minutes and wasn't fazed by me taking photos. At one point, the fox came within 2 metres of me, making focussing with my 400 prime lens impossible!  I've got a headshot image to follow.

Friends or Lovers?

A few weeks back I was photographing Eastbourne Pier but came across this underpass  which runs along the front. I was immediately drawn to the lines and lights and took a few photos of it empty. But then this couple walked through and added a little interest to the scene. I was quite glad they kept to the left though as it allowed the lights and the full length of the underpass to be seen.

I don't normally share this stuff but on this occasion it is sooo funny...

How did this criminal not just run away?  It's hardly Batman in his prime - Bruce Wayne has clearly had a few too many pies!

Hey G+!

Hope everyone is having a good weekend. There's not much I can say about this one other than it was taken at Bodiam Castle a few weeks back and is of a Mallard take off.  You can see droplets around the feet in the large version.

Cheers,

Gez
