Protests continue to grow across Brazil: http://reut.rs/1amX45I
The marches began with a protest in Sao Paulo against a small increase in bus and subway fares.
The demonstrations drew the scorn of many middle-class Brazilians after protesters vandalized storefronts, subway stations and buses on one of the city's main avenues, but the movement gained support and spread to other cities as police used heavy-handed tactics to try to quell the demonstrations. The biggest crackdown happened on Thursday in Sao Paulo when police fired rubber bullets and tear gas in clashes that injured more than 100 people, including 15 journalists, some of whom said they were deliberately targeted.
The harsh police reaction to last week's protests touched a nerve in Brazil.

Okene survived by discovering a bubble of air near the ceiling of the bathroom and bedroom.
But he was not alone. Continue reading: http://reut.rs/1a3YZMd

Fake shops hide economic troubles in Northern Ireland: http://reut.rs/15zaeJU
At a former butcher’s shop, stickers applied to the windows show a packed meat counter and give the impression that business is booming. Across the street, another empty unit has been given a makeover to look like a thriving office supply shop.
Locals are unimpressed.
Local councils in Northern Ireland have painted fake shop fronts to hide the economic hardship being felt in towns and villages near the golf resort where G8 leaders will meet this month.
Northern Ireland’s government has spent 2 million pounds tackling dereliction over the past two years. Almost a quarter of these funds were freed up in anticipation of Britain hosting the annual Group of Eight (G8) summit on June 17-18.

In Turkey, at least 100 injured as police use teargas, water cannons against protesters at Gezi Park: http://reut.rs/18DxojA
Police raided the camps of demonstrators at dawn on Friday. The demonstrators have been in the park for days to protest plans to build a shopping mall. Clouds of teargas rose around Taksim Square, a historic venue for political protest in the country.
Protests began on Monday after developers destroyed trees in the park. It has since widened into a demonstration against Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's political party, perceived policy brutality, and the government’s stance on Syria.
Amnesty International said it was concerned by what it described as “the use of excessive force” by the police.

Colombia's $17 billion dollar money laundering industry damages the country's ability bid to grow the legal economy. http://reut.rs/11vcpPq

Roads into White Gold: stunning pictures from Ethiopia's ancient salt trails -- http://reut.rs/Z1bkP8
One of the hottest places on earth, northern Ethiopia holds long-used roads for caravans of camels to collect salt through a sun-blasted desert basin. In the "Danakil Depression", the average temperature is 94 degrees Fahrenheit (34.4 Celsius).
A paved road is being built to make it easier for industrialized companies to access the salt flats, which could put the ancient camel caravans out of business.
"Most of the people who live here are dependent on the salt caravans, so we are not happy with prospective salt companies that try to set up base here," said Abdullah Ali Noor.
