Schiller for a discussion of *the influences Norman Rockwell absorbed to become one of America’s most beloved illustrators.* They will look beyond the narratives of Norman Rockwell’s art to explore the deeper foundations of his paintings.  A creative force in 20th century American visual culture, Rockwell was an engaged observer of the world of art, and often called upon classic and contemporary masters for artistic direction and inspiration. This conversation reveals the depth of Rockwell’s interest in the art of other creators, and their impact on his imagery for the covers and pages of mass-circulation magazines.  *Ask your questions to the curators on this page* or by using  #Arttalks !Art Talk with the Norman Rockwell Museum: Norman Rockwell’s Influences and Borrowings2013-09-12 17:00:00369

It is my birthday today and I have been thinking about what to share with you as the steady rain softens to a whispering mist in the trees. No need to water the garden this morning! After much indecision, I settle on this painting from 2012 with its short description.....

Reef Bay Morning Experienced 11 x 14 inch oil on canvas

I remember the sea, and the soft rush of water as it comes ashore. I remember the heaviness of the rocks and the salty dampness of winter seaweed. I feel the coolness of the air and the cry of the gulls. Alla prima or wet-on-wet seascape painting with the quiet strength that is part of any peaceful west coast day.

These warm greys with hints of west coast blues seem perfect for my birthday morning! All the best of today to you!

Note: The work is still available though I may have put a spell on it as it is a treasured piece on my studio... more »

The rich bounty of early fall is here. I love this time of year! As I was considering what I might like to share with you today this colour painting kept dancing around and shouting "pick me" so here you go.

Plums Apples and mostly sunflowers 20 x 24 inch oil on canvas

The soft filtered light of late summer minimizes the contrast as we drift into the spaces in between, enjoying the colours and the relationships within this still life painting. Painted 1.5 inch edges. No framing necessary.

Art News. I recently became intrigued with Bosch's paintings. Timeless and time specific all at once. If you are not familiar with this painter from 500 years ago in Europe you might want to have a read on this article and then poke around a bit and discover his works. A most enjoyable adventure - I promise!

I don't think that I realized how much the first one was swished from the same brush as the last two until I put their image side by side. A little something that was posted from my business page yesterday.

Note: I shall be working on painting edges and inventory for the next few weeks in preparation for a studio visit and possibly an open studio day following. If I share a new painting in the next while it is because I am procrastinating. Which I might but it is not my intention ;)

Featuring three paintings that have sold in the past few months. Each, with its own moment of high drama, has left the studio to grace the homes of individual collectors. Sometimes I think of them. Sometimes I miss them.

Evening Thunderclouds over the Strait of Georgia 20 x 20 inch oil on canvas is the latest to leave.

Point No Point Mid-storm 16 x 20 inch walnut oil on canvas was barely dry and we hardly had time to become acquainted.

West Coast Early Evening Winter Sea 16 x 20 inch was the first of these three to exit left as the poster painting of my solo exhibit this year.

But of course, there are others now available such as the seven new Northern California landscape and seascape paintings. There will be more after this as well. But these three - well, they are missed!___I don't think that I realized how much the first one was swished from the same brush as the last two until I put their image side by side. While I have a laptop full of behind-the-scene gallery portfolios to develop today, I thought I might share an image from yesterday before I get started.

Pushing Edges Arbutus Tree stands

As most of you know I am passionate about identifying, simplifying and capturing the natural tension in our west coast landscapes. Often this means stretching the thirds rule of composition and seeking unusual angles. My knees are intimately familiar with the sandstone surfaces because low angles are a frequent consideration. But even for me, this particular capture pushes the edges almost to the breaking point. You might ask - why so much sky and why is the arbutus tree on the edge of the frame? I have been deliberate in these aspects of the composition and these questions are clues to the mystery and purpose of the image. Our #BCStorm   ‪left 440,000 without power on the southern west coast with countless trees down on roads, cars and houses. It was the worst storm in about a decade with the highest winds of 117 kmph recorded on our neighbouring Saturna Island. Yet, Mayne Island looked in fairly good shape when I went out after things had calmed down in the early evening. There was a lot of windfall apples and pears to the delight of hungry deer and some debris around but other than that the power was coming back on in the rather stunning dramatic light. Here are five images that are almost a counter narrative to news reports. Both accounts are true and part of the whole. As a flicker calls outside the window with the sun streaming in I wish you all the best of an island Sunday. Enjoy! #westcoast #britishcolumbia

Never give up without making an effort. You just might catch a fish and get to eat it - maybe, if you are fast and just a bit lucky. This young river otter and the smallest of the group was pretty good at snatching his breakfast from the sea yesterday in Navy Channel on Mayne Island. I don't think he will be the runt of the family for long. I don't know my fish well enough to identify what they were catching but it was a feast for sure.

The year is 1987 and I had sold the old family car and got us each mountain bikes. For the next three years while I was attending the University of Victoria to complete my undergraduate degree this was our only transportation besides the city bus. We were way ahead of the fashionable and environmentally friendly trend of cycling. It was a necessity to get groceries, take clothes to the laundry mat, go to doctor's appointment and parent teacher interviews.  We basically rode everywhere. She is six years old here and won't be outdone by her nine year old brother who is forever doing tricks on his bike. Hence the leg sticking up over the handlebars for the photograph. At this tender age, she learned traffic signals and patterns and bicycle safety and etiquette on Victoria's narrow streets at a time when there were no dedicated bike lanes. As a parent it was sometimes unnerving. One incident that stands out is a summer's day about a year into this adventure. We were going down a gentle hill. Josie was cycling a short distance in front of me when a pickup truck pulled out in front of her from a side street.  He had his window down and the first he noticed that she was there was when he heard the sound of her tires sliding on the pavement as she skidded sideways to a stop. The driver's face turned a sickly shade of grey as he looked down at this young child just inches from his door and the black tire marks left behind by her back tire grabbing on the warm pavement. Josie of course was pleased with her skill and situational awareness rather than terrified. Her brother would be impressed. That girl could ride! And she still does.

Footnote: Her brother is still doing tricks though now his off road bike has a motor. We believe the driver of the truck was not severely traumatized but we are willing to bet he checked for cyclists before pulling out in the future.

Calling it done! I had to take the painting back down to the edge of the sea to complete it but didn't take long after that.

So is it a studio or a plein air work? It is neither one nor the other of course. However, since I started from my a plein air acrylic sketch for reference it is likely more that than not. What is unusual is that the painting was completed in reverse of most combinations of these methods. Generally oil paintings will start en plein air and sometimes be completed in the studio. Quite frankly it really doesn't matter. Most important for an artist is to do whatever it takes to get the job done. In this case I wanted the intricate intimacy of sea, land and sky during the fast changes of low morning clouds by the sea. I feel I now have this and I retained the loose brushstrokes and large cross-hatch like tension I was seeking. Another good day painting here on the... more »

Today's work in fast-changing morning light while rolling low clouds were splashed with moments of intersecting sun and waves. It was good day for painting. Just so you know, I am prepared to let this sketch go for $350 including shipping. For comparison, these quick acrylic sketches are less than half the price of my oil paintings. The catch is I need to keep it another week because I sense that there is an oil painting lurking in this moment. I am going plead with it to find its way onto a larger canvas. Then the sketch can go.  All the best of today to you!

A brilliantly executed painting by +Lena Levin and it is now available through her patronage program...

Good morning, dear friends, and fair time of day!

There is a special story about this painting. Once upon a time (and still somewhere underneath what you see now), it represented two "firsts" for me -- it was my first oil painting, and it was the first time I painted a nude (I did draw nudes before, but had never painted any).

I had kept it for years, untouched, just for reference sake (so that I could look at the "starting point") -- if you have followed me for a while, you may have noticed that this is an unusual behavior for me: I usually destroy my paintings fairly quickly if they don't pass my regular inner reviews...

And, then, at some point, I looked at this painting and saw what it could look like "really" (I know it's vague, but I cannot find more precise words right now). So I pulled it out, and painted over it, and that's what came out.

Now it's one of the paintings available exclusively to my patrons through Patreon, for indefinite loan (you can check it out here: http://lenalevin.com/gal/Patr-4/) -- a project designed to get original paintings into your home, even if you think you cannot afford an original. For now though, it lives in my husband's home office... :)  ___A brilliantly executed painting by +Lena Levin and it is now available through her patronage program...

An art share for today. Unfortunately, Eugeniy Zebek shares mainly to communities and hasn't changed his setting to not have the posts show up on his profile. The result is many repeats of the same painting before you can see another. But if you go into his photos then it is easy to flow through to other work. And it is worth the effort. All the best of Monday to you!

Bell Towers of Florence Countryside 16 x 20 inch walnut oil on canvas

This is the point where I almost wish I hadn't shown you the process from beginning to completion. The agonizing psychological conclusions of holding and then wiping out hundreds of years in a few dry brushstrokes while adding a dash of drama is almost too much. But there it is. The naked results. I am finished with it. Yet my eye keeps wandering back and contemplating - what if we were different? What else would be different if we were? Silly questions that forced my hand and are unanswerable.

Would you have been happier with just the end result?

Bell Towers of Florence Countryside 7 "resting" 16 x 20 inch walnut oil on canvas by Terrill Welch

If you are walking from Florence south via del Podesta which is part of the old road to Rome take via del Portico to the right that is above Galluzzo. It is the medieval Chiesa di Santa Lucia in the foreground. The church has two bells from the 14th century. The Monastero della Certosa del Galluzzio founded by Niccolò Acciaiuoli in 1342 is on the hillside in the background. Today there are cars and freeways running lengthwise between these two places but from this view one can imagine there being only foot traffic moving along the narrow roads between stone walls from one place to the other.

My paintings don't just appear on the canvas with each bit perfectly formed. They are coerced, poked and enticed into existence. I start with an idea about how I want to handle a particular subject and gradually it starts to take shape as the layers of paint and brushstrokes are moved onto the canvas. Bell Towers of Florence Countryside – 16 x 20 inch walnut oil on canvas has been more than a year in the musing and thinking process. It is getting close now but not yet finished. I thought you might enjoy the work-in-progress shots along the way. I will add one or two more photographs to this album as I finish up.

Once in a blue moon on Mayne Island...

Technically this was taken about 6.5 hours before the second full moon in July know as the a blue moon. But I a positive it won't be this pretty at 3:00 am tomorrow morning. At least, I am pretty sure. Enjoy!

From yesterday's early evening walk with the trees next to the sea on Mayne island. It is an ordinary life with extraordinary moments.

Finding a quiet alley in Venice is not as easy as one might think. But over somewhere around the big fish market and then just a few more twist and turns and we are here. Window shutters slap open to the late morning while the clicking of shoes echo into the distance. The warmth softly radiates back to us off of the brick walls where the deep shade is still cool and welcoming. Venetia Italia how many have wander into this wabi sabi alley of yours?

The painting is done I think but will need its final photograph yet.

Worth the read regardless of your current views...

Margaret Atwood is an excellent writer and she's written a piece here that is beyond excellent...with superb illustrations. Please read and share and act on this in large and small ways. As she says, it's everything change.___Worth the read regardless of your current views...

Well, time for a break I think....

There is so much more to Venice than light and shadow. But how do I capture this signature essence when Venice creates itself faster in my imagination then the radiating heat off the walls of the buildings or the echoing footsteps in my immediate physical presence? Dear old Venice is trapped in romanticism and my brushes finally had to give in to its stories.

Dressed in black and under the spot lights at the largest juried annual exhibition in the region, the Sooke Fine Arts Show, until August 3rd. If you are in the neighbourhood, do drop in and say hello. This is an amazing show overall and well worth at least a 60 minute browse though I recommend staying for lunch or coffee and going through the works more than once.

It is raining FINALLY this morning on Mayne Island. We haven't had much to speak of in the way of falling wet stuff for about three months. Thought I would share one of my northern California paintings as I know this is another area that could use some rain. This is one of seven new paintings released this week at:
http://terrillwelchartist.com/2015/07/22/northern-california-contemporary-landscape-oil-paintings

Enjoy and all the best of Friday and the weekend to you!

Big fat fluffy clouds move swiftly across the early spring brilliant green of the Fremont Hills. The dark drama mirrored in the quarry lakes. A brief burst of rain did not reach the landscape until early evening.

A great opportunity offered by my colleague +Lena Levin . Well worth checking it out. As a collector of her work I know first hand what it is like to have her beautiful paintings in my home.

Good morning, dear friends, and fair time of day. I have some news -- over the last month, I've been working on creating this opportunity for you to have an original painting of mine in your home with your budget barely noticing it. All the explanations of how it works are on my main Patreon page linked below!

The set of paintings participating in this first experimental stage is limited, so please check it out NOW if you are interested -- it's all first-come, first-serve.

And please share this post if you know someone who might be interested in this opportunity -- it will be greatly appreciated!___A great opportunity offered by my colleague +Lena Levin . I am in the process of releasing all seven of my northern California paintings. It may take me all day and part of tomorrow to get them up with their specific description and then a website post linking to each specific work. So for now I shall start you with the first or rather the last once the others are added. Here is 1st of several releases to come today "Early Spring Muir Beach Overlook California" 18" x 24" that can be viewed in detail at my Artsy Home online gallery at:

Today, as I gather a few things from my small gardens I think about what a treasure it is to wake and drift out into the world while still a little sleepy and grab the watering can. We have been dry for a while now so the produce is struggling some and yet, well.... there is enough for tasting and appreciation. A kohlrabi is ready along with a second picking of small tomatoes with a handful of green ones for frying. There are a few pea pods left and I dug another hill of beautiful new potatoes. The sage is lovely and the rosemary and onions powerful. A couple of calendula flowers will be used to liven up the tomato halves with sprigs of basil. Life is good, plentiful and filled with abundance. May your day be filled with your own simple pleasures of noticing.

Sunset and the Arbutus Tree
Wisps of a warm breeze off the Strait of Georgia seem to carry the summer sunset as it lightly brushes against a lone arbutus tree. Fragrant with solitude, the moment holds today and tomorrow within the sandstone and the deep roots of upheaval.

The Watchman's Hut, Machu Picchu

Once upon a time, a long time ago, in May of 2002 it rained heavily in the mountains surrounding Machu Picchu. Months earlier he had shown me a picture in a travel magazine of the watchman's hut and said "this is where we will be staying" I thought "rather rustic but we can make it work." Then we traveled. As I stood, drenched beneath my raincoat and steam rising off me from the climb, the damp mystery of this place settled into my bones for keeps. Today it is his 70th birthday. I made this image a painterly print for a gift. Possibly it will find its way onto a canvas of its own soon. We shall see. Memories are like that - surfacing from an unexpected trigger and then sashaying across my present day with a mind of their own. This is a good memory, revised and massaged many times from frequent visits.
