Google Art Project9,569,464Thursday 12 September at 11am ET, join Norman Rockwell Museum curators Stephanie Plunkett and Joyce K. Schiller for a discussion of the influences Norman Rockwell absorbed to become one of America’s most beloved illustrators. They will look beyond the narratives of Norman Rockwell’s art to explore the deeper foundations of his paintings. A creative force in 20th century American visual culture, Rockwell was an engaged observer of the world of art, and often called upon classic and contemporary masters for artistic direction and inspiration. This conversation reveals the depth of Rockwell’s interest in the art of other creators, and their impact on his imagery for the covers and pages of mass-circulation magazines. Ask your questions to the curators on this page or by using  #Arttalks !Art Talk with the Norman Rockwell Museum: Norman Rockwell’s Influences and Borrowings2013-09-12 17:00:00364

Mario Rotta15,308This is a circle in which I included a lot of excellent photographers: but most of them start from pictures to create visual design effects. So, this circle may represent a list of people working on the edge between photography and art. I like that experimental edge :-)2014-05-22 06:00:41400016

Curating Content on Google+0The new Pʜᴏᴛᴏɢʀᴀᴘʜʏ ENGAGERS Cɪʀᴄʟᴇ is out!    [Mar 21, 2013]Record participation again last week!!  +1s, comments, and shares!  WOW!!Quick start instructions:➀  post a URL link to a G+ photo in the comments below,➁  check out some photos from others and +1 and comment on them,➂  publicly share this circle-post, from a new friend's stream (instead of ours)➃  add this circle, and replace it every week. You will get a comment from us and be added (or stay in) the circle share next week!  Questions?  Ask in comments below - you'll get help!Full story: This circle is for meeting engaging G+ users about photography.  The interaction happens in the comments and re-shares.  Post a link to a photo from your stream during the last week in the comments below.  It can be your photo or someone else's.  Then from the comments here, check out someone's link, and comment on / critique that photo.  Try to pick someone new each week, so you will meet new people and make new friends (more than 1 is ok too).  Re-sharing their circle-share helps them learn about Ripples! Results: your photos will get more exposure, you will be circled more, and you'll find active people to add to your stream.  Re-sharing this circle is highly recommended, and some form of engagement is mandatory.  That will result in a curated circle that's always fresh!  If you drop out for any reason, you can get back in at any time by adding content & engaging in the current weekly circle! We respond with up to 3 ☑ next to your name: 1 for linking your photo, 1 for sharing the circle, and 1 for a +1 on this post.  The circle will always have the people who interacted the most over the last 3 weeks. This will be done every Thursday.  It is for active G+'ers that want more interaction and exposure. This is a hybrid idea, taking the best parts of circle sharing, communities, and G+, and rolling them into one!Biggest Ripple last week: +Ree Saunders with 6!  The runner up was +Paul Paradis with 5.  Nice work to those that helped them!  The average share-chain (ripple) for the whole group was 2.47...  lower than last week, but we had many more shares, so still an improvement! Top Influencers last week: +Ludovic Moreeuw, +Michael Sonntag, +Ree Saunders, and +Paul Paradis.  Special thanks to you all too!See http://goo.gl/ldooJ for full details! #publiccirclesproject #ph2013-03-21 16:56:39422329104139

Charles Lupica60,136►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄         Top 500 most followed photographers          ►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄Once again it's time to share my circle of the top 500 most followed photographers.  I'm sharing the circle here but I posted the the full list as a series of posts on +Most Followed Photographers on G+. Photographers with an " * " in front of their name are not included in the numbered count because they only share outside content,  their content is content suitable to a blog and usually has no images associated with it, or they have become mostly or completely inactive on G+.This list was complied from two previous lists and a line-by-line search of CircleCount.  If you know of someone that should have been on the list and isn't, the most likely cause is that their +CircleCount profile doesn't include the word photographer, or camera, photo, or foto. Or, I had a senior moment and missed them.  I thought I had avoided that this time but I still managed to miss +Magnus Ericson should should be around 454. I noticed some interesting things when compiling this circle.  There are a lot of people that moved into the top 500 that abandoned G+ for some reason or their interaction has become one post a month.  I have also noticed that many of the photographers in this group have a lower follower count than they had 6 weeks to 8 weeks ago.  I'm not sure what conclusion can be drawn from this but I find it very curious. To view the lists please see the following links.001 to 080: http://goo.gl/mmr7w  4'431'409 - 55771081 to 160: http://goo.gl/mXuup  55368 - 37454161 to 240: http://goo.gl/rLmy1  37343 - 30457241 to 320: http://goo.gl/o06Hy  30131 -25785321 to 390: http://goo.gl/747Lf  25760 -23013390 to 450: http://goo.gl/xDc2D  23006 - 21347450 to 510: http://goo.gl/sEnac  21321 - 194402013-02-23 23:33:145001353799

Margaret Tompkins43,985>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Great Photographers With < 50,000 FollowersThis is a very special circle.  I’ve not shared it before but I have shared the people in it.  I call it the Graduates Circle.  These are the fine people that I shared with you when they had < 25,000 followers but now they have more – they’ve graduated!  These are the people who are top photographers, very interactive, and are the heart and soul of G+.  I ask each of them to identify those people who inspire them, form a circle and share it.The photographers here are all in my personal circles.  The choices are mine and mine alone.  No one asked, begged, or pleaded to belong.  No bribes were offered or accepted.  These are the people that I follow because I appreciate their great quality photography and their interaction.  Most I have met as I help curate several of the photography themes.  There are NO requirements to share this circle.  I would appreciate the people in this circle plus the post, leave a comment, and share the circle as public.  Each profile has been verified by me.  Most have between 25,000 and 50,000 followers.  They each have high quality original photography content.  You won’t find many animated gifs!  I have included myself in the circle. I wasn’t included, what do I do?  If you meet the criteria, weren’t included, but think you should be, then leave me a comment.  Maybe I don’t know about you.  There are millions of people on G+ and I don’t know everyone.  However, I’ll be happy to have a look at your work if you will call it to my attention.  Start posting landscapes that get my attention (see above)!!There’s a really great photographer XXX that you didn’t include.  Please feel free to recommend qualified people.  I discover new people every day and would be happy to look at their work.  Please make sure that the recommended person meets the criteria.  If they don’t then that tells me a lot about you! #Circleshare   #Sharedcircles   2013-02-16 21:06:161261232987

Jeff Sullivan1,152,722Most-Followed 500 Photographers CircleWhile a circle like this has the obvious drawback of missing some excellent photographers newer to the site, Charles often follows up his Top 500 Most Followed Photographer circle with circles going all the way down to photographers with less than 5000 contacts.  Here are four circles Charles has created to help us discover and recognize photographers at all levels within the G+ community:Under 5000 -    Under 7500 -    Under 15,000 - 500 Most Followed Photographers - (here)I like to interact with people who are active in photography... share at least a photo or two of their own original work per week, so I'll slowly whittle the circle down to a stream of excellent photography (I've started, but may not finish for a few weeks).---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+Charles Lupica  Charles Lupica Dec 25, 2012 (edited)  -  Public►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄         Top 500 most followed photographers list                   circle of 500             and Group 6: 421 to 500►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄If you're not in this circle and you think you should be, I'm sorry.  I have missed a few people by pure accident.  My methods are entirely manual and I do miss people.  I have checked every profile and I have included only those people that share their own work, and share it on G+. Ardith Goodwin39,738New to Google+ Starter Circle for Art PeepsTo all of you who are in our community but are new to Google+ I wanted to share a 'small' circle of folks you can follow that tend to have a love of arts, share art related content, and welcome new followers/conversations within their streams. This group is to help you get your stream active, explore what it means to follow 'strangers', and begin interacting with others, if you so choose, here on Google+. If you are brand new, let me caution you to not approach Google+ like FB because you will be confused and frustrated. I like to think of Google+ as a great blend of Twitter, Stumble Upon, Blogger, and Youtube. The nature of this network is that you follow people who post content that you are interested in reading. Just because you follow someone DOES NOT MEAN that they will follow you back and that is perfectly ok. And, just because you follow them it doesn't mean they will see what YOU post. They will only see what YOU post if they follow you back. I have included several folks from this community within this circle, as well as who is a Google community supervisor here, and a great gal! I encourage you to add more folks as you see them share and get to know them here. At any time, you can also remove someone from this circle or add to it, as you see fit. If you are lost or need some guidance for Google+, don't hesitate to ask for help, many of us LOVE to help newbies. 2013-01-04 01:43:0253724

Help. What do you think?

I am working on revising my Artist Statement. It needs to answer these questions -  In three to five paragraphs of three to five sentences each, provide basic information like WHAT DO YOU DO? WHY DO YOU MAKE YOUR ART? WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO MAKE IT? WHAT DOES IT SIGNIFIES OR REPRESENTS? WHAT'S UNIQUE OR SPECIAL ABOUT HOW YOU MAKE IT? and briefly, WHAT IT MEANS TO YOU? (250 words or less)

Here is my draft. Does it work? What would make it better?

I am a full-time painter and photographer living on Mayne Island off the southwest coast of Canada. I paint and photograph my lived-experience of our natural environment.

I want to strip away any human illusion of our separation between land, sea and sky.

My paintings translate my moments of engagement with the everyday world. Primarily these works reflect the landscapes that surround... more »

This 6th personal choice for #‎bestfourteenoffourteen‬ paintings in 2014 is in many ways an anomaly in my work because of the prominence of a human made structure. Still, the time spent doing the painting sketch beside this bridge was a good foundation for rendering this larger painting that was technically challenging for someone who usually prefers completely natural landscapes.

The 6th addition to the #bestfourteenoffourteen   paintings in 2014.

Morning by Pont d'Avignon 24 x 36 inch oil on canvas.

The Pont d’Avignon or Pont Saint-Bénézet once had 22 arches. The bridge was eventually abandon as the arches took too much upkeep due to being damaged when the Rhone river would flood. The four remaining arches are believed to have been built around 1345. The bridge was the inspiration for the song Sur le pont d’Avignon. The subject for this work began with a plein air sketch while I was standing on the riverbank on an early morning in June of 2014 in Avignon France.

This painting is already in a private collection.___This 6th personal choice for #‎bestfourteenoffourteen‬ paintings in 2014 is in many ways an anomaly in my work because of the prominence of a human made structure. GARY OAKS ON BROWN RIDGE 14 x 18 inch oil on canvas by Terrill Welch

Following the goat paths where the Garry Oaks lean into Brown Ridge on Saturna Island is a beautiful sight. We must stop before looking up from our feet and out over the inside passage towards Saltspring and Vancouver Island. These muted hues have endurance and awe brushed into their presence.Canadian landscape art is imminently present in this view.

This is the last Art Commentary for the year and it seems fitting that we conclude with remarks about the Olive Tree painting. Enjoy!

THE OLIVE TREE painting
Commentary by Charles van Heck

"Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where others see nothing" wrote the innovative French artist Camille Pissarro.

Terrill's painting THE OLIVE TREE, a 40" height x 30" inch width x 1.5" in depth oil painting on canvas is an invitation to share a solitary moment on a Tuscan hillside of Florence, Italy. Walking, feeling the warmth of the sun, we listen to the chirping of birds, and inhale the sweet aroma of the warm earth. Then, unexpectedly, our attention lingers. Pausing, we find ourselves reluctant to turn our gaze away from a solitary olive tree.

In many respects, this is a deeply personal painting. In a blog Terrill has written, "On occasion a painter is mesmerized by a subject. In this case, I have fallen under the spell of a particular olive tree…" What was it about this tree that so captured her imagination? Her brush strokes are rich and full, capturing the May light, the hues of sky and earth, and the subtle motion of leaves, the far off hills, the tranquility of a pastoral moment. But our eyes are continuously drawn back to the olive tree as if to the radiant face of an aged woman.

"Work," Pissarro advises artists, "at the same time on sky, water, branches, ground, keeping everything going on an equal basis... Don't be afraid of putting on colour... Paint generously and unhesitatingly, for it is best not to lose the first impression." The seamless balance of rich and full colors, the weaving of light and shadows, and the distant, tall narrow trees in this impressionistic oil painting allows us to experience Terrill's first impression to see, paraphrasing Pissarro, a beautiful thing in a humble tree.

More about this painting including link to detailed viewing and purchase information is available at: http://terrillwelchartist.com/2014/11/01/the-olive-tree-a-contemporary-landscape-painting

* Charles van Heck is the former editor of the Woodhull Arts Journal and academic lecturer. His poetry, essays and interviews of artists have appeared in various magazines and journals.

FROM THE WHITE ROOM IN AIX EN PROVENCE
25 X 35 cm acrylic painting sketch on archival 185lb paper

From the vantage point of the white room in Aix en Provence,France, I often stood and observed the interactions and comings and goings of locals and tourists as they past on the streets below. It was a delicious bird-like view where few looked up and noticed my prying inquires.

The original is in my private collection and not for sale. However, art prints are available at:

Evening with Cezanne's Mountain - 18 x 24 inch oil on canvas

This evening painting, which began with an acrylic painting sketch on the painters' mound in Aix en Provence, is about the interplay between our internal world and what is accentuated by the light resulting in our creating what we believe we see is in front of us. Montagne Sainte-Victoire as we know from the work of Paul Cezanne is an exemplar subject for this conversation. There is a second painting of the same scene in the morning as well. From our time on the southwest coast of Vancouver Island

"In the shadow of a west coast storm" is typical of the heaviness and rush of wind and sea that can last for days during the winter months here on the west coast. It is not so much what one sees but rather what they hear and feel which lasts. Blanketed in dreariness and whipped around our shoulders in a cloak of uncertainty, we brace ourselves. It will pass we say. Hope the power stays on we mutter. Hunker down its going to be a good one we call out. Branches and tree cones are slammed down on the roof. Trees give up their resistance landing with a thud on the forest floor. The waves keep coming in unrelenting conviction. But it is the many shades of moving grey that stay with me the longest. These are what filter deep into my subconscious and twist at my imagination - tempting my paintbrushes and canvas.

BREEZY BAY MORNING - 36 x 36 inch oil on canvas almost needs no introduction. For some of you this may even be your favourite painting of the past year. The original is still available at this time along with art prints in my redbubble storefront. Links can be provided in the comments or by DM upon request.
A little background: Squared with a Breezy Bay Morning on Saturna Island. This painting is more than a nostalgic moment. It is about a global myth and a modern-day fantasy. I leave you with its loose grasp on your critical thinking. I leave you within the warmth of our common dream.

Psst! Santa and Ms Claus arrived to Mayne Island on schedule this afternoon. Of course, on a small island like Mayne Island a ship is much more practical than a sleigh. This may not be serious news or information to some but I can tell you with conviction that there are others that might consider this the most important event of the season. There were elves to lead the way and swashbuckling pirates loaded with loot. Their swords were hung with swords which quickly disappear into small hands in the crowd.

While working on the construction of the Tea House, she lived alone in the radio tower (a remnant of Canada’s west coast defense against Pacific WW2 invasion). The octagonal concrete foundations of the 12′ diameter tower are still intact next to the trail to the point.

The unusual name “Point-No-Point” comes from the original survey of this stretch of coast. It refers to a secondary point of land that is apparent, but doesn’t extend farther than the two primary points on either side of it, commonly referred to as a “point-no-point”.

The Soderberg family began working with the resort in 1973 when it had only 7 cabins, all of which are still in use (albeit renovated to the point that Miss P may not recognize them)! Sharon and Stuart Soderberg continue to maintain and expand the resort – an envious task to those of us who are city-bound and anticipate our return visit!

Many of the clientele are like myself having come back many times over the years. Mostly a quiet and contemplative lot who stroll, read, write, paint and visit in soft voices.

Raincoat, rubber boots, butane stove, matches, pot, water jug, quilt, food supplies, battery radio, camera, painting supplies and determination. We shall have an adventure! I blew my hair dry and then packed the car this morning. Not the wises order of tasks. Rainfall and wind warning in effect but we are packed for the southwest coast of Vancouver Island where the weather is like this frequently....

The sea rolls forward onto the shore. Trees tingle from the day's sun while the rocks release their summer heat as the water charges across their surface. I am there. You are there. The salt spray is moist on our skin and the rhythm of the sea matches our breath, our heartbeat, and answers a call to all that is knowable.

Just a quick note from the sea and to let you know that I shall mostly be off line this week - at least that is the plan. This less than a minute is one of my two video sketches related to the recent painting. The second may play directly afterwards and the third is from a different kind of day all together. Enjoy and I will catch up with you here and there over the next few days.

I have been meaning to share my Art Archive inventory provider for a while. I don't believe they do much advertising and the business is built by word of mouth. I lost my inventory records previously as they were on a faulty external hard drive that crashed. For the past couple of years, I have been using this online program and love it! I can organize everything for shows and labels and even to show publicly if I want. My studio assistant also inputs data and finds it straightforward and easy to use as well. Anyway, here is the link https://www.artworkarchive.com/

All the Canvases are Taken but One - notes from the studio of Terrill Welch...

I woke this morning to do a review of my art supplies. I am down to one blank square canvas and I am out of lemon yellow paint and seriously low on a few other pigments. All the other canvases are taken and stacked several layers deep around the rooms – a few more than sixty of them in total.

You see, yesterday I finalized my commitment to a two month solo exhibition during the months of April and May at the Camassia Café on Mayne Island, British Columbia Canada. The relatively new venue is quickly becoming popular for its art and music shows as well as tasty, carefully prepared foods. The theme of my exhibition is “West Coast Landscapes as Home” and though I have plenty of work available for this adventure, I want to do a few specific and surprise pieces. I have at least six or so in mind. But these lack of supplies in the studio has me pacing the floor and trying to decide if I want to catch a ferry tomorrow and go to the city or see if I can find the canvases I need locally and manage with the pigments that I have. For a few brief moments I am frustrated with living on an island which feels like being stuck in the middle of nowhere when I haven’t carefully planned enough to keep my supplies well-stocked. I suppose this isn’t exactly true. What it really means is I have been putting off going to the city again for far too long.

But enough about this! I stopped my rant of private whining immediately following my reading of this letter sent from Vétheuil on the 17th of August 1879 to the doctor and art collector Georges De Bellio:

For a long time I have been hoping for better days ahead, but alas, I believe the time has come for me to abandon all hope. My poor wife is in increasing pain and I cannot imagine that she could be any weaker than she is now. Not only does she not have the strength to stand up or walk one step, but she cannot hold down the slightest bit of nourishment, although she has an appetite. One has to be at her bedside continually attending to her smallest wish, in the hope of relieving her suffering, and the saddest thing is that we cannot always satisfy these immediate needs for lack of money. For a month now I have not been able to paint because I lack the colours; but that is not important. Right now it is the sight of my wife’s life in jeopardy that terrifies me, and it is unbearable to see her suffering so much and not be able to provide relief… But I would ask another favour of you, dear M. de Bellio, which is to help us out from your own pocket. We have no resources whatsoever. I have a few canvases in the rue Vintimille; take them for whatever price you like; but please respond to my call for help and send us what you can. Two or three hundred francs now would save us from hardship and anxiety: with a hundred francs more I could procure the canvas and paints I need to work. Do what you can, in short; I told our landlady to let you in: so look at my paintings and buy them for whatever you like.

Awaiting your reply, I send you my best wishes.

Yours, Claude Monet

(reference: MONET by himself p.31 edited by Richard Kendall, 1989)

A few short weeks later Claude Monet’s wife Camille died leaving Monet to care for their two sons and extended family members which included Alice Hoschedé and her six children. He was to turn forty years old on November 14th of the following year. By the end of this next decade Monet’s fortune did start to take a turn for the better and he was able to buy the house at Giverny and be free of financial worries. We also see his paintings during this period take up the themes that will remain part of his work throughout the rest of his career.

On this hopeful note, with not a health, financial or career worry of any notable concern, I shall be off to see what our local Dragonfly Gallery – purveyors of fine art supplies, craft materials, quilting needs, cards, gifts and faerie glamour – has for canvases.

What letters from writers or painters or other artists do you read for perspective and inspiration?___

Copper Gyroscope Earrings
$50.00

Gyroscopes can be a wearable reminder of your own ability to find a sense of equilibrium as you move through a fast-spinning world… or just a really cool pair of earrings. (Because they are really cool.) These Gyroscopes in copper are a fantastic, warm alternative to fine silver, and a great addition to trendsetting jewelry collections, as well as for anyone who wants to add an ancient metal with a stylish modern twist to their jewelry box.

I love visiting all my social media communities first thing in the morning. Though there are some overlaps, each is unique group of beings. This photo was taken by Josette DeBattista. We made arrangements online. She had to travel by ferry from a neighbouring city to our small island. We might as well have passed each other in the grocery store and set up the shoot. Best of today to you! :)

And if you feel like sharing, what makes your online community "genuine" for you?

From today's walk...."winter log balancing"

Sometimes, there is not much at all going on when I am out wandering. But this big log caught up on the sandstone rocks after a high tide was of as much interest to the seagulls as it was to me.

It was as if we both said at once "what is it doing here?"

Though there was no answer, the low afternoon light was rich with promise and harmony. The ordinariness of it all soothing the prickles of crisp air drifting over the sea.

The photograph also comes in prints, totes, pillows and iphone cases but it is the mug that I am most keen on this morning :)

This painting will be on its way to a new home in Vanderhoof sometime early in the New Year.

Formally, it will be registered as sold. However, this is part of what I call my "family investment plan." Each year I offer a few members of my family a birthday present of any one of my paintings that are available. I encourage them to choose a larger work. This then allows me room to keep painting big pieces while I are waiting to attract more wealthy art collectors. The smaller works I sell keep the studio going but I do love painting on a grand canvas. So I have come up with  a few plans to keep doing so. The thing with art is that it never really establishes its true value until it is sold a second time. This is often after an artist has departed their earthly activities. Morning by Pont d' Avignon - 24 x 36 inch oil on canvas

Happy Birthday to my younger but oldest brother!

So this is the story behind where this painting is going to go live.

Ah, I guess you have noticed there is this Black Friday thing going around. I see it has struck my Redbubble storefront this morning. Thought I had better let you know that there is 15% off everything until midnight somewhere with the code SAVE15

I don't usually pay much mind but there are a few more calendars I need to pick up, a cushion cover or two and some tote bags. Small things but this savings should help out with the shipping and leave a little left over for another day. Here is the link directly to my work if you also have some of these things or prints in mind for gifts.

I could say it is "resting" but it isn't. The painting is done.

STUART RIVER KICKING LEAVES 24 x 36 inch oil on canvas

This is another of my mystery paintings in that its realism is mostly a deception. I have included two detail images so you can get a better idea about what is going on. Truthfully though, it is the layering all the way back to the yellow ground that gives this painting its vitality.

I suppose it may appear to be a pretty picture but it isn't to me. Winters are historically harsh in this area. Snow is not far off and a day of kicking leaves means there is a good stockpile of winter wood. The larder is full and the winter vegetables put down. If this was when I was young, it would soon be time to dress in layers knowing I would still be cold and take my 22 rife into my grandfather's boat along with our little dog Charlie Brown. You see, my grandfather was a trapper. I was his sharpshooter for muskrats. If they were plentiful, we would take a few this way rather than trapping them. I had to line up a bead on the head of the small animal right at the waterline in the moving riverboat. As soon as I shot and gave the nod, the small dog would jump overboard and bring the dead muskrat back to us before it sank. My aim had to be good because if it wasn't the little dog could get pulled under by the diving animal and drown. This risk was partly due to the fact that Charlie wouldn't let go and give up easily. This was his favourite job and he was a determined to do it well.

I don't remember what the muskrat hides were worth a piece once they were skinned, the hides stretched and then shipped to the fur buyers. I do know that my grandfather never really had a regular job for wages very often and trapping and guiding were the family livelihood. This cash bought necessities like flour, sugar, salt, boat motors, pickup trucks, snowmobiles, canned peaches, raisins, honey, nuts, rice, lamp gas and mantels, ammunition, maybe a new axe if it was needed or a skinning knife. Oh the shopping list could also include material to make work shirts, or brassieres or maybe even a blouse or new sheets. But you get the idea.

So kicking leaves was and is a luxury between the tasks necessary to survive another winter. Yes it is beautiful with the last heat of the sun on your back and cool northern breeze on your face. But I can hear my father say - the leaves are not real pretty yet. Next week they will be better. Mom will leave a hint of a smile between her shoulder shrug, squint slightly as if seeing a moose or bear across the water. I will look just in case she has. Then we will all turn and continue back towards the house appearing to be in no hurry but already mentally deciding what needs to be done next.  ___

New painting blocked in...
"Stuart River kicking leaves" work in progress 24 x 36 inch oil on canvas

I started this one yesterday and I pulled a face evening in the very beginning. It is not the landscape itself I find challenging. The difficulty is with the overlapping shifting of time through memories and my latest experience of this place along the river. Nothing seems to want to stay fixed long enough in my mind to complete a singular reference point. I stopped work on it at this early stage today and went for a long walk. Tomorrow I will begin again. I have decided to allow, partially because I seem to be unable to do otherwise, the layering of experience to this one specific landscape. The time frame spans about 44 years - not everyday after the first five years but at least a few times a year. This is part of the issue I believe. I have made up this scene in my mind during... more »

The time frame spans about 44 years - not everyday after the first five years but at least a few times a year. This is part of the issue I believe. I have made up this scene in my mind during my absences so that it competes successfully with my physical visits. I seem not to want to paint either but some blend of the two. So, if in the end I can get something to work we may have a painting. We will just have to wait and see.___

Primarily these works reflect the landscapes that surround me but also a few still life renderings because food is so much apart of my daily experience.

Growing up in rural British Columbia, Canada, I have always been deeply connected to nature. Trees speak to me as if on a shared breath. I long for the rhythm of the sea. The sky is like music to me. My work has always been driven to express these connections.

My brushstrokes are meant to render the light, shadow, movement, smells, sounds and emotions I am experiencing as I paint. My rural background and my present location within our natural landscape, drive me to I seek this express. The resulting paintings and photographs are my full-body of sensory experience expressed.

In my paintings and photographs, I am having an ongoing conversation between myself and the viewer. The work is an invitation to join me in the exploration of the relationship between the innate elements of our environment and ourselves. My intention and my desire are for the viewer to find themselves within the landscapes or kitchen counter as I have - filled with curiosity, wonder and discovery.___

This month's commentary is by Sam Juliano about EVENING THUNDERCLOUDS OVER THE STRAIT OF GEORGIA. Enjoy and all the best of today to you!

EVENING THUNDERCLOUDS OVER THE STRAIT OF GEORGIA
Commentary by Sam Juliano

Terrill Welch’s sublime impressionistic oil painting EVENING THUNDERCLOUDS OVER THE STRAIT OF GEORGIA has a fierce sensory undercurrent – a raging and visceral convergence of elemental properties that would even impress the regal flounder from the Grimm Brother’s The Fisherman and His Wife whose own ire required the proper theatrical trappings to denote that all is not well in the heavens.  But by her own admission the artist confessed the enormous challenge of documenting an experience that is both cosmic and suffused with a swirling sense of movement.  Staged at Georgina Point at the Straight of Georgia which separates Vancouver Island from the coast of British Columbia, the creator is armed only with an easel, a brush and a tube of oil paint – bare essentials with which to create an infinite event, one where lights have dimmed and an unwanted guest has intruded without proof of identity, to cast a pall of mystery and foreboding during the short interval between day and night.  With bold application of impressionist strokes, the painter has forged a scene of turbulent force – visceral and seemingly controlled by spiritual entities.  For those who like expansive outdoor atmospherics, defined by brooding weather and furious movement, Terrill Welch’s EVENING THUNDERCLOUDS OVER THE STRAIT OF GEORGIA is for you. It is imbued with a spiritual context – one that implies that all is not well beyond those pearly gates.  Audacious and original, this meteorological tapestry is unquestionably a masterpiece by a singular artist.

EVENING THUNDERCLOUDS OVER THE STRAIT OF GEORGIA is a 20 x 20 inch oil on canvas painting. All the best of Friday to you!

Sold! Blackberries Golden Plums Transparent Apple (8 x 10 inch oil on canvas)  is off on an adventure that will see it traveling halfway across Canada and eventually into the U.S. I can't say more than that because it is a gift. So sshhhh!

Here is the story of this painting:
The days of light, seasons, colour, form and space collide within my ordered and defined sensory system. Not chaos. No not that. Only adjustments and a release from specifics. Blackberries and golden plums are my favourites. The transparent apples just happen to ripen at the same time adding a nice shape and colour for balancing a still life plate.

There is still 12 hours to midnight November 14, 2014 Pacific time for 20% savings on my original paintings.

Search - Terrill Welch Artsy Home - and you shall find my online gallery page. Just click on the “Make an Offer” button located on the top right under the price for the painting you want. Then put in the code 20%savings and of course, anything else you would like to say. Then send it off. This will place an email in my personal email inbox. I will adjust the price and assist you with delivery and purchase arrangements. Enjoy!

From yesterday afternoon...

“West Coast Living” has the wild half-tethered feeling one gets when standing out on a point next to the sea. Life, on the southwest coast of Canada during the fall and winter seasons, is like this – often isolated, frequently vibrant and occasionally terrifying as the storms pass through. Nature stirs deep emotions yet holds no opinion. To identify with the tenacity of a wind-swept tree is easy.

This is one of my favourite times of year.  It is the beginning of my quiet time. All marketing events and promotions are now done until early spring. I feel a little like I am on holidays. It means longer than usual walks, extended days painting, tea with friends and lots of time for visiting online and in-person.

Just so you know, prints are available at:

Nice way to start the day...

Sold! Flight At Dawn - 9 x 12 inch oil on canvas is off to a lovely home in British Columbia. Here is the story of this painting...

It was a sunrise early in February on the Mayne Island shores looking over the Strait of Georgia. I was standing on the shore as the light came up and danced across the water and through the mist that was leaving just a hint of the coastal mountains showing in the background. A seagull took flight and the day had begun leaving behind this minimalist canvas.

Enjoy your day!___Nice way to start the day...
