Iris in May Rain
The sun is squeaking out after a day of fine rain where the clouds and the sea touch. I took the opportunity to go to the Japanese Garden here on Mayne Island. The irises are just starting to bloom.

three things at once
Have you ever wondered what it looks like when you are doing three or thirteen things at once? This is my daughter with her eyes on her two year old, working on finishing a very cold cup of tea and getting the little one settled in for a snooze while carrying on a conversation with me... all at the same time. No she doesn't know I took this photograph. It will be a surprise ;)
Our weekend has wound down to soft quiet of sun warming the bed and the occasional of the peacocks... so quiet, almost too quiet.

The ghost writer
An ancient customs in #Vietnam to celebrate for lunar new year. People hang those papers on the wall which were written by ghost writer. Content about luck and hope....
You can see they do that at Long Son town (Ba Ria - Vung Tau province) around 10 days before Lunar new year day.

The O Brothers
Of course it is a ton of work to have two children less than two years apart but it doesn't take too long to also see some of the benefits. These boys adore each other. The older brother has to be watched so he doesn't love on his baby brother too much. And the younger brother needs to be watched so he doesn't try to hang onto his big brother too hard with his little pincher fingers. But other than that, there are many moments like this one which make a person's heart melt. Just after this shot the big brother gave the little brother a big kiss which made the little brother laugh.
All the best of Sunday to you!

At just after 11:00 am this morning my daughter will arrive with her two year old and six month old sons. It is the May long weekend on Mayne Island with a host of activities and time to play on the beaches. My hope is to add a few new images to this personal folder. The consequence is that you will hear very little from me unit early next week.
Have fun over the next few days and I shall catch up with you soon.

Broke the tip on my 40 year old favourite palette/painting knife
I am hopeful though that I will be able to get it fixed so it can be used again at the local Tinkers. I have a feeling it wasn't particularly expensive as it still has a faded "Japan" on the topside of the blade. It is also not stainless steel or anything. In fact, you might be wondering why I would care so much. Well, there are two features of this painting knife that I can't seem to find in a new one.
The first is the length of the crank. From the top of the bend to where the handle begins it is almost twice as long as my other small knives. This gives the knife a flexibility and a lovely distance from the canvas that my other knives do not have.
Second, the handle is smaller and a smooth oval, almost round. The knife will roll in my hand if I wish giving it the dexterity of a brush.... more »

There she goes...
My old 1991 Ford F-150 standard 4x4 has been with me since 1994. She doesn't look so big with this fellow behind the wheel as he is 6' 2" tall and a big man. I am just under 5'4" and not so big. The new owner has known both Miss Prissy and I for most of our respective lives. He is taking her to live out the rest of her useful days in the bush where she rightfully belongs. Though she is a little on the light side as heavy half ton with overload springs, hence her name of "Miss Prissy," he is confident that she will do fine.
If you happen to see this old girl on the 5:20 ferry headed for Victoria for an overnight rest, before crossing at Nanaimo and then going out the back way through the Duffy Lake Road, give her a wave for me will yah! Her new owner can sometimes growl with conviction but he is a good guy and if you ever need a hand... more »

The Edge 48 x 24 inch oil on canvas in our covered cob courtyard
One of the issues with sharing paintings virtually is to provide a sense of size if a person isn't familiar with looking at canvases everyday and sometimes even if they are. I am exploring some interesting context to help with this issue. Just for fun here is my latest painting leaning up against our outdoor fireplace.

Happy Mother's Day
Before I had a long visit with my mother on the phone, I put a pot of homemade baked beans in the oven. Now we are getting ready to go to the volunteer Fireman's Mother's Day breakfast here on Mayne Island which is rolling in mist just the way I like it.
So Happy Mother's Day to all you moms out there and a special cyber hug for those that are missing their moms on this special day.

Sea Folds
I suppose the scene could be described as layers but to me it is like folds of time as the various elements arrange themselves within the picture frame. Today the sea will not be so sky blue. Heavy clouds are promising us rain. We woke well before daylight and closed a few windows. Now the day with its overexposed edges, feels raw instead of the sweet melancholy I had hoped. But if the rains come, the mist will roll through the valley and life will seem more as it should be.
All the best of Saturday to you.

At the Beach Another Time
Can a person go to the beach too many times? I am guessing not because each time is unique and the light, the moment, the breeze and sea seem to have infinite combinations to delight us. This painting has loosely finished edges and is suitable for hanging as is or it can be framed to your liking.
This is Reef Bay on Mayne Island in the Gulf Islands on Canada's southwest coast.

Yesterday's painting session...
the edge work-in-progress 48 x 24 inch oil on canvas
It is a long and lean painting so you may have to open it up to see the whole thing.
A few bits to tidy but other than that I am not likely to do much more with this one. I had spotted the composition on our evening walk the day before and grab a reference image. It is not one that could easily be painted on site as I was standing below tide line... and a canvas this size would get blown over.
I love the sandstone, arbutus trees and blue sky! What more could a pianter want?
All the best of Monday to you!

Sister oil paintings of Tulips on the Springwater Deck with side-by-side photograph on today's Terrill Welch Artist release post:
http://terrillwelchartist.com/2013/05/05/sister-oil-paintings-of-tulips-on-the-springwater-deck-mayne-island
Though obviously sisters, each painting has its own personality and character. In early comments from viewers there seems to be not much of a preference for one over the other.Though there are some who definitely like one more than the other. As the painter I am ambivalent about a preference as each as something to me and neither is perfect but both are alive.
What about you? Do you have a preference for one painting over the other? If so which one and what is it that has it being your favourite?

What was and what will be
I grew up in the late 60's and 70's when AM radio was still what most people drove around listening to. If you had music in the house it was being played on LP's.
Records.
Albums.
45's.
One of the earliest and fondest memories I have of my Dad was watching him work in the garage while listening to The Doors. Good times, man. Come on baby - light my fire.
I remember when 8 Tracks came along, everybody thought that was so cool because you could skip ahead to different sections and not listen to the entire album. Also, all that popping that you would get from playing an LP was gone too, replaced by the subtle hissing of tape against head.
Then Cassettes came along. Not really better, in fact worse, but more compact. The Walkman blew us all away because for the first time you could slap a cassette in... more »

B & B morning in Painterly Pinks
With a little textures and filter wizardry, I capture the feel of our latest get-away to the Humboldt House B & B in Victoria B. C.. This is the Gazebo room. The beautiful light in this honeymoon dreamy boudoir was just to good to pass by without sharing. Besides, I am on too a personal study of red and pink. This seemed like a perfect sample for my inner scrap book.
Good morning!

Spilling Over
I was reminded of this painting yesterday as I was taking photographs of the rough seas. At 12 x 12 inches and 1.5 inches deep oil on canvas, it is not a large work. Yet it comes to mind often and pulls my attention even when it is sitting amongst larger more colourful paintings.
A special thank you to all the new people who have followed my art Art Page. What many of you won't know is that this beach house is usually directly behind me as I am taking photographs at Reef Bay. Today's work... Nope it is NOT the same one!
Tulips Springwater Deck II resting
I question my sensibility in sharing this experimental work with you that is coming from my recent plein air painting of the tulips on the Springwater Deck. It is all wet and shiny but gives you an idea about what is on the canvas. I wanted to try for a less structured painting with fewer defining lines. After scrapping it once and using that as the underpainting I tackled the canvas again today. However, I really didn't get much further in the direction I wanted to go than the first try. I stubbornly refused to let go of certain aspects of the scene that keep it firmly anchored to its actual physical forms. All I ended up with is a painting that is just slightly looser than the first plein air.
Ah well, at least I won't tell you that the mailman painted it.
