Wow, life got in the way again of G+! This shot was taken back in March one cold evening and it is of Balcombe Viaduct in East Sussex. A train goes over this bridge roughly once a minute as it is the mainline from Brighton to London.

Urban Wildlife Portrait I

I did say I was going to move onto landscape photography but that was before a fox turned up in our garden!  This friendly fox stayed in our garden for about 10 minutes and wasn't fazed by me taking photos. At one point, the fox came within 2 metres of me, making focussing with my 400 prime lens impossible!  I've got a headshot image to follow.

Friends or Lovers?

A few weeks back I was photographing Eastbourne Pier but came across this underpass  which runs along the front. I was immediately drawn to the lines and lights and took a few photos of it empty. But then this couple walked through and added a little interest to the scene. I was quite glad they kept to the left though as it allowed the lights and the full length of the underpass to be seen.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend. There's not much I can say about this one other than it was taken at Bodiam Castle a few weeks back and is of a Mallard take off.  You can see droplets around the feet in the large version.

For many years, it has been a wish of mine to photograph Bodiam Castle. I've seen many photos of this magnificent castle but never had the opportunity to shoot it myself. So last weekend I put that right and I took my family to see this National Trust treasure. I wanted to capture the castle at sunset but my young lad was tired and irritable so sadly we had to leave early. However, that was not before I got this LE shot, just as the golden hours was starting and giving the castle a glorious glow. I will most definitely be going back to this castle some time soon, probably on my own and early one misty morning so I can capture this wonderful castle in a very different and magical setting.

Every Cloud Has A Silver Lining

What a day.  I got put on a 30 day consultation today in my job, which is likely to end in redundancy.  So I'm feeling a little blue like this picture.  Help cheer me up by +1'ing it, if of course you like it!

The shot is a 30 second exposure taken at dusk and it was actually quite a bit darker than this.  I've got a behind the lens shot on my phone which I'll share when it's finished charging!

Hope everyone is well.  I think this is going to be the last of my snow photos since I wasn't too happy with how the remaining shots came out.  Who knows, we might get more snow in the coming weeks and I'll post some more shots.  Though it felt somewhat milder today as if spring was on it's way.  Must admit I'm looking forward to warmer times and longer days.

Hey all!

Here's another shot from a few weeks back when we had a dump of the white fluffy stuff here in the UK.  I think we got about 4 inches here in the South Downs which is quite a lot for the south east, though nothing compared to what the US has recently got.  I hope everyone in the US is keeping safe right now.

Phonography - what advice can you give?

I'm thinking of exploring phonography a bit more, after all, the cameras on phones are getting pretty good these days.  Are there any plussers you can recommend that are sharing great phonography work?  Any tips, tutorials or perhaps software that's good?  Gadgets or gizmos that can be attached/used with a phone?

Cover Image Hidden Photo Challenge!

Okay, long post, but it's worth it, trust me...

So I've finally upgraded my profile to cover image and I have to say it took ages to create (just look at how it lines up with other elements in the G+ profile page - sweet!). However, I've done something else with my cover image that I've not seen anyone else do. There is another image hidden in plain sight behind my profile photo that will only be revealed by clicking the cover image. Go on, click it, you know you want to! So those of you who've been looking at the back of my head for the past year and a half now know what I look like ;)

It occurred to me whilst doing this that I could have been much more creative with my two photos and told a short story. Perhaps a profile image of me pointing at something and the hidden image revealing what it is. Or a profile... more »

Ocean/river cruising and photography

I work for a British cruise operator. At the end of every cruise we ask customers to complete a satisfaction questionnaire with one question enquiring about hobbies and interests. Over 50% will put photography as their main interest - it is far and away the top answer every time.

This might be a shot in the dark and may get little or no response, but I thought I'd ask if anyone is into cruising and photography, either as a traveller or working in the cruise industry?

Hope everyone is good  :)

The snow has all gone here in the south east of the UK, but I still have a few minimalist style snow photos to share over the coming days.  This is probably my favourite image from my outing last week over the South Downs.  It was quite a trek getting to these pylons but I feel it was worth it in the end.

The photo was taken using a Canon 5DmII and a 24-105L lens.  Processed using Silver Efex 2 – one day I might actually get round to sharing a tutorial on the processing!

I’m going to change my cover image tomorrow and I’ve been a little creative with it, something that’s a little different to the norm and I think it’s quite cool. I’ll be sharing the templates so others can get creative and participate so watch this space!

Inactive People on G+

Wow, just spent the last couple of hours going through my circles and removed 300+ people who hadn't posted in over 3 months! One person hadn't posted in over a year and still had 50k followers!  I guess that means people can't be bothered to de-circle inactive people?

Hi plussers!

I got to go out and play in the snow on Monday as I had a day off work.  Ended up walking 5 miles over the south downs (UK south east) and didn't meet one person the entire time.  I love walks like that where you can just get lost in your surroundings and enjoy the beauty of the landscape, particularly when it's full of unspoilt snow.

My aim was to get at least one minimalistic type photos but I reckon I've got 5 to share of a decent enough quality.  I'll be sharing them gradually over the coming week or two when I find time to process them as I've got my sisters wedding album to do.  She got married in August last year and I've been putting off the album for some time so I've got to knuckle down and get on with it.

Hey G+!

Can't believe this is my first ever snow post.  I suppose past ones were just family snaps and not the sort of shot I would put on G+.  Had to get down low for this one as there were quite a few animal tracks which only disappeared with the low angle.  Processed using Silver Efex II though mainly tweaks and little effort required.

+Justin Hill seem familiar?!!  When did you take yours?  Took mine yesterday afternoon then saw yours posted and thought almost exact same place.  Would be freaky if we missed one another by minutes...

Good morning/afternoon/evening or goodnight depending on where you are in the world!

Another photo from a recent family trip to Winter Wonderland up at London's Hyde Park.  Night photography is not something I do much of but one cannot help but go wow at all the bright lights of this place and pull out the camera.  I think I loved it as much as the kids did!  :)

Been out shooting landscapes in the snow today. First major shoot in almost a year and it felt great. Was treated to (but couldn't get close enough to photograph) much wildlife including a herron, fox, rabbits, kestrel, woodpecker, robin and numerous other birds.  So I settled for some landscape shots :)

Must have covered about 6 miles over the hilly south downs building up a huge appetite in the process that has now been satisfied with 4 cheese and ham toasties!

Communities are great.  We just crossed 20,000 members last night at the Light Box.  http://goo.gl/jisrZ  Party!  Woo Hoo!  A smaller more intimate group of photographers have emerged to become regulars, and this really is the sort of community that I like best -- a smaller group of impassioned photographers.  It's carefully managed by skillful mods.

What sucks though is that G+ doesn't bump threads when people comment on them.  So the very best conversations die so quickly.  They  get pushed down to the bottom of the page and die a quick death before they can ever even really be fulfilled.  Sometimes good conversations take time.  They can last weeks, months, years even.  Punishing the best conversations by burying them deep into the netherworld of a discussion forum hurts communities.

Bubble Pond is in Acadia National Park, Maine.  This particular shot was taken at dawn when the water was perfectly still and the light soft, thus revealing a gorgeous reflection of the sky above and the surrounding fall foliage.
