Light Pillars over Turret Arch
During the workshop in Arches I saw strange beams of light shooting up through a thin layer of clouds. Turns out, they were light pillars. Can you believe we captured light pillars during the Arches workshop? Crazy, right! Light pillars are a kind of optical phenomenon which is formed by the reflection of sunlight or moonlight by ice crystals that are present in the Earth's atmosphere. Red more about it here: (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_pillar)
This gorgeous image comes from Sandro Vargas (https://www.facebook.com/sandro.vargas.98) who traveled all the way from Brazil to take part in the workshop. It features the optical phenomenon and Turret Arch underneath a night sky.

Frame from a timelapse I shot on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in Iceland about a week ago. The sky was on fire this night! Click the photo to enlarge, it looks much better that way.

You may now see my latest time-lapse video in a higher quality pixel of 1920x1080! It may take additional time to load if you have a slow connection, but well worth the wait. Did I mention the watermark is gone?
As I mentioned a few months ago, some crazy things are in the works for us here at Goldpaint Photography and this is just the beginning. Have a great day/night everyone and may the stars dance above you.

Sit back and enjoy some jaw-dropping imagery from the 2013 The World at Night's International Earth and Sky Contest. Wow! These images are all incredible and it's pretty amazing to see how high the caliber has been set for next years competition.
I'd also like to congratulate +Zach Grether (an online workshop victim) for taking 2nd & 4th place in the 'Against the Lights' category! Nice work Zach!!!

Arches Landscape Astrophotography Workshop
Crazy times last week... My 3 day Arches National Park workshop turned into a 5 day class due to odd spring weather. However, we still had some great opportunities to photograph and light paint magnificent Arches under the night sky. Keep a lookout, I'll be sharing additional images from happy participants in the coming days. Do you think I'm posting a few images to add to my collection? Not this time! I never touch my camera when teaching because my focus is entirely on my students and their experience. How can I serve my clients if I'm taking pictures the whole time?
This image comes from Dan Fletcher featuring Delicate Arch and some crazy lightning in the distance. (https://www.facebook.com/danfletcher) He already wrote about his experience you can read more about here:... more »

Most photographers who travel to Iceland hope to see the amazing aurora - I was lucky to see the legendary Aurora Alligator :-)

In Search of Light
Like many of my photography combatants, I went out searching for another chance to capture the aurora borealis over Central Oregon on April 14. The aurora didn’t exactly live up to the reports that were filtering in, but in any case, I had an incredible time doing what I love most, staring up at the stars. This image is a frame taken around 11:11pm (make a wish!), and shows a slight glow of the aurora to the right of the image. Keep in mind, the naked eye cannot see this faint light, but when I returned home and looked through the images on my computer, I was a bit surprised to see it.
Most people do not have the opportunity to take a short 30 minute drive and land themselves at some of the most beautiful landscapes and dark skies in the state. Therefore, during silent nights like this, where conditions do not necessarily go my way, I feel it’s impo... more »

Friends, Family, & G+ Fans,
How do we begin to describe our adventure this past weekend? Can you remember how long has it been since you enjoyed a profound and enlightened experience? Well, it turned out to be one of those weekends for us.
About a month ago, I was contacted by LA director John Chester, who's latest work involves working with Harpo Studios. Currently, he's working on short documentary pieces for a show called 'Super Soul Sunday', airing on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). Many things led to others, and after several emails and phone calls with John, was able to set up a time for my better half and I to come to Los Angeles. We spent the weekend creating a short documentary piece about our photography and journey over the past few years.
We spent an incredible weekend at a place called Apricot Lane Farms. John and his wife Molly are working o... more »

Standing Still
Please feel free to share!
The Balancing Rocks in Central Oregon are nothing short of impressive and mysterious. I arrived at the trailhead, special thanks to GPS, around 11pm and had these iconic pillars all to myself. You know the feeling of 'being the only kid in a candy store'? Yep, this was me. It was all mine! I wandered around for the first few hours trying out a variety of comps and met the rising Milky Way around 3am. Clouds began to move into the area shortly after, but I was able to capture this image before they took over the entire night sky. Clouds seem to be the trend for the month... nothing but clouds.
Did you know balancing rocks were in Central Oregon? Ever been?

Nomadic Dreams

Deep within the Sierra Nevada Range, along the John Muir Trail, lies one of my favorite high elevation alpine lakes. Thousand Island Lake is roughly 10,000 feet above sea level and is one of the darkest areas I've had the pleasure of capturing the night sky. Over 70 miles away from the nearest city, light pollution is becoming an issue. The city lights from Fresno have already started to obstruct the visibility of the night sky and it's only going to get worse.
Light Pollution and Energy Waste
Unused lights left on over night, such as those in office buildings, waste energy, for no reason. This type of illumination contributes to the general sky glow of the city as well as wasting energy. Being dark sky friendly does not mean ‘no light.’ It means using the light that you need for a particular task in the most effi... more »

International Dark Sky Week
In 2001, “The First World Atlas of the Artificial Night Sky Brightness” reported two-thirds of the U.S. population and more than 50% of the European population had already lost the ability to see the Milky Way with the naked eye (http://bit.ly/16BdS69). The report also showed that 63% of the world population and 99% of the population of the European Union and the United States (excluding Alaska and Hawaii) lived in regions where the night sky is brighter than the threshold for light-polluted status set by the International Astronomical Union.
In 1994, an earthquake knocked out the power in Los Angeles. Many residents called local emergency centers reporting a strange “giant, silvery cloud” in the dark sky. That giant, silvery cloud was the Milky Way, which many residents had just seen for the first time.
